Job 22:21

Greg and I watched a video this morning that someone shared on Facebook.  It was of a cockatoo named Maxwell whose owner told him that he had to go to the vet and get his nails clipped.  You can hear the owner telling Maxwell to get into his carrier…and then the rant starts.  Not only does the bird argue with his owner, but he swears at him.  I made out a couple of “four-letter phrases”…but mostly, we laughed at the tone the bird used as he muttered “under his breath”…and then as he squawked his protests.  Obviously, he mimicked his owners and behaviors and language that he has observed in the home – and it wasn’t pretty!

Too often, we are Maxwell the bird.  The protests and ugly things we say are not from God – but rather what we have observed in the world at large.  We have learned very well how to throw a little fit…and we are all good at giving God our best tantrum on occasion.

  • “WHY are You punishing me?”
  • “Where ARE You? – WHERE did You go?”
  • “When will it be MY turn?”
  • “How much longer do I have to suffer?”
  • “What’s in this for ME?”
  • “Do I HAVE to do this?”
Maxwell’s owner was calm.  He firmly told the bird to “get your butt in the cage,” and to stop using such ugly language. I don’ t know what he did after the camera stopped rolling…but on camera, he never forced Maxwell – or even really approached him with the intention to load him into his carrier.  And God will not force Himself on us either.  We have to “quit our bellyaching” and surrender to Him…and He will surround us with His favor – and His peace.

Aren’t you ready to “let go and let God”?  Aren’t you ready to agree with Him…to fully trust His plans and His timing…and to bask in His presence and provisions?  Wouldn’t today be the perfect time to begin?

Jeremiah 31:33-34
Here is the new agreement that I, the Lord, will make with the people of Israel:

“I will write my laws
    on their hearts and minds.
I will be their God,
and they will be my people.

“No longer will they have to teach one another to obey me. I, the Lord, promise that all of them will obey me, ordinary people and rulers alike. I will forgive their sins and forget the evil things they have done.”

This morning on Facebook, I read a sweet essay about the history of aprons…why people wore them and the many uses they have. I can still picture my Mam-ma Polly in her apron.  She rarely set foot in the kitchen without first tying one around her waist.  And many of the purposes listed for aprons in this essay were lived out by my grandmother.

In recent months, I’ve begun to wear an apron more often…not because I’m getting old and turning into my grandmother - at least not in the way you think!  I’ve found that many of the advantages an apron provides are legitimate…from keeping your clothes clean to providing a handy “potholder”, pocket, or place to wipe your hands.  And every time I wear an apron, I feel my Mam-ma Polly’s presence.

This is how it is for us with God.  There have been people in our lives who have introduced us to Him…there are plenty of resources for Bible study, Christian fellowship, and service.  The formal “lessons” may have changed – or ceased altogether.  But God’s presence prevails.  Like the apron we tie around our body, God’s love and care surround us…remind us of the lessons He has given us…and protect us from the “dangers, toils and snares” of the world.

When you think about it, an apron is a pretty basic, universal item.  All kinds of people from all walks of life wear an apron…for a myriad of purposes.  God’s love and care are totally like a “Spiritual apron”…available to the ordinary and rulers alike…”one size fits all”.  This versatile, protective garment is the right accessory for virtually any situation…and a wonderful reminder that “I am your God – and you are my people.”

You may not wear an apron in your everyday life…but if you aren’t covered by God’s “Spiritual apron,” you are missing out on the blessings of His covenant and the promises He has given us.  Will this be the day that you “put on an apron” and feel God’s presence?  Don’t you think it should be?

Jeremiah 9:23-24
The Lord says:

Don’t brag about your wisdom
    or strength or wealth.
If you feel you must brag,
    then have enough sense
to brag about worshiping me,
    the Lord.
What I like best
    is showing kindness,
justice, and mercy
    to everyone on earth.

Scripture taken from the Contemporary English Version © 1991,1992, 1995 by American Bible Society, Used by Permission.

On the rare occasion that I am sick and need a doctor, I don’t mind seeing his/her diplomas hanging on the wall.  It doesn’t bother me to know what schools this person attended – or that they belong to an honor society or even a fraternity or sorority.  But what I really want to know is whether this person knows what he/she is doing with regard to my health.  So I ask questions…I “shop around” and ask others what their experience was like with this physician.  I listen in the clinic and the ER to the chatter of nurses and other staff and note when they readily volunteer, “He/she is good!  You will be well cared for"...and I note when the references are NOT so glowing!

At the end of the day, it doesn’t matter to me what color or gender a doctor is…his/her country of origin…and most certainly his/her sexual orientation, economic level, or political preferences.  All I care about are:  1) is he/she knowledgeable about medicine and how to treat my condition, and 2) whether this care can  be administered with kindness, concern, and a decent bedside manner!

And so it is for us in our fellowship with God. He wants us to have a profound knowledge of Him and His word - and such an intimate relationship and communion with His Holy Spirit - that we exude confidence, hope and courage in our daily living.  He wants us to operate with a good “bedside manner” toward others.  God wants us to dispense kindness, justice and mercy to everyone…just as He gives these things to us.  When we demonstrate these things rather than bravado or our own narcissism, God draws nearer to us…and we feel His presence and peace.

When you boil it all down, nothing in life is all about us.  We are merely God’s vehicles to deliver love, grace, mercy, kindness, wisdom, forgiveness and the message of salvation through Jesus Christ to others.  When we get caught up in how wonderful we are or what we have accomplished, we essentially shove God into a closet and press against the door...and nobody benefits.  Will this be the day that you open that door and usher God to the forefront?  Will this be the day that you start to consider the other guy more than yourself…and in doing so, truly feel God’s presence?  Don’t you think it should be?

Jeremiah 29:11-14
I know what I’m doing. I have it all planned out—plans to take care of you, not abandon you, plans to give you the future you hope for.

“When you call on me, when you come and pray to me, I’ll listen.

“When you come looking for me, you’ll find me.

Anyone who knows me very well knows that I am a “git-r-done” kind of woman.  Okay, some would translate this as “impatient”…and I will admit, it’s in my genes to act quickly and with determination!  But over the years I have discovered the merits of waiting and exercising patience.  And this wisdom has been particularly valuable in matters that involve a major decision – or challenge my faith!

I am a work in progress, but I know more than ever that God’s timing is precious – and perfect.  So as I talk to Him about situations – over and over – and nothing seems to change…I try not to get discouraged or frustrated.  I remind myself that He must be working on something really good!  After all, God has promised that He has it all planned out – our care AND our future.  God assures us in this passage that He IS listening, and that when we look for Him, we will find Him.

Not only do we like to ask God “Why?”…we also spend a lot of time asking Him “When?”  My challenge for all of us today is that we would hear God’s words in this passage – and hear them well.  “I know what I am doing,” He tells us.  “I have it all planned out!”

We’ve read this passage – and others in which God assures us of His presence and power – a zillion times.  Now it’s time for us to move out of the way and let Him work!  I’m pretty sure we will be blown away by the results!  Are you with me?

Jeremiah 22:15-16
But a beautiful palace does not make a great king! Why did your father Josiah reign so long? Because he was just and fair in all his dealings. That is why God blessed him. He saw to it that justice and help were given the poor and the needy and all went well for him. This is how a man lives close to God.

A friend and I were recently discussing how we Christians treat others…and how our words and actions are perceived by those in our midst.  We both acknowledged firsthand acquaintance with more than one person who appears to “have it all”…yet they seem about as spiritually empty as one can get. When you examine how these folks treat others, it’s not a stretch to explain the correlation.

Let’s be honest… when “it’s all about me”…it’s not about God.  When you are “in it”…meaning life, your business, personal relationships - or whatever thoughts and activities fill your day – for the sheer purpose of what YOU can gain or how YOU can benefit…there isn’t much - if any - room for God or others.

This is not about wealth, money or power…because I know people with plenty of all three who still manage to keep the balance.  They fully utilize their “blessings” to serve God.  Their first step is to ask Him, “What should I do for YOU today?”…and they plot their course accordingly.  There are others who focus totally on their own gain.  By all appearances, these people may be highly successful.  But if you study the whole of their lives, I bet you will find that they truly are anything BUT close to God.

Understand what I am saying…you cannot “have it all” until you step outside of your SELF and focus on God.  HE gave us every blessing that we enjoy!  Our job is to be good stewards of these gifts.  My challenge is that we examine our priorities – and our hearts.  This is not about the quantity in our lives…but rather, the quality of our choices and actions with regard to what we have been given. The goal is to draw close to God…to find Him in our daily living and keep Him near to us at all times.  In order to do this, we have to stay busy thinking about God and others…and forgetting ourselves.

Do you feel close to God?  Is it all about you – or Him?  Is it time to shift your focus?  Will this be the day that you begin?

James 4:7-10
So let God work his will in you. Yell a loud no to the Devil and watch him scamper. Say a quiet yes to God and he’ll be there in no time. Quit dabbling in sin. Purify your inner life. Quit playing the field. Hit bottom, and cry your eyes out. The fun and games are over. Get serious, really serious. Get down on your knees before the Master; it’s the only way you’ll get on your feet.

Scripture quotations from The Message. © 1993, 1994, 1995, 1996, 2000, 2001, 2002 by Eugene Peterson.  Used by permission of NavPress, Colorado Springs, CO.  All rights reserved.

Do you know someone who has “hit bottom” in a particular area of his/her life?  For some, this is a dramatic, earth-shaking experience…the doctor tells you that you will die if you don’t stop smoking or drinking – immediately!  You find yourself in an abusive relationship and realize that your very life might be in danger if you don’t seek help - and quickly!  Someone you love dearly dies, and you are left feeling abandoned and empty – and wondering which direction to go and what to do next. You lose your job due to downsizing and/or outsourcing – or you fail that all-important college entrance exam or final licensing test.  You lose a long-awaited baby…or the doctor tells you that you will never give birth to the child you long for so desperately.

Any of these experiences can rattle even the most solid Christian…and those whose faith wavers on a good day might experience some real challenges.  But I know from personal experience with “hitting bottom” encounters that God can use these to reconnect with us…to grow our faith and fellowship with Him…and to push the devil farther away.  Because, you see, when we “hit bottom,” this delights Satan.  He would love nothing more than to see us stay there and wallow…to pull away from God and say, “If He really loved me and cared about me, God would NEVER allow this to happen!”  And God says, “Nothing could be further from the truth.  I’m right here with you…just take my hand and I will pull you to safety.”

You may be in a “hitting bottom” situation today…or things may actually be running along pretty smoothly for the moment.  Either way, this is the perfect time to “draw near to God”, as the scriptures remind us…to reinforce your fellowship with Him by spending some time in prayer and reflection.  Open your Bible and let God’s word speak to you…sit quietly and listen for His voice…feel His presence and His profound love and care.  Push the devil to the curb…and leave him there as you move closer to God.

Make this a day when you get down on your knees and then rise to your feet with a renewed courage and hope. Say a quiet “Yes” to God today…and feel Him work His will in you.

Isaiah 55:8-11
This plan of mine is not what you would work out, neither are my thoughts the same as yours! For just as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than yours, and my thoughts than yours.

As the rain and snow come down from heaven and stay upon the ground to water the earth, and cause the grain to grow and to produce seed for the farmer and bread for the hungry, so also is my word. I send it out, and it always produces fruit. It shall accomplish all I want it to and prosper everywhere I send it.

Greg and I watched a movie last night about WWII, called Fury.  Starring Brad Pitt (who also served as an Executive Producer), this  film portrayed the experiences of one particular five-man platoon that manned an Army tank behind enemy lines in Germany.  The film is truly graphic and gruesome in spots, as the story of just how horrific this war was comes to life on the screen.  And we are left to ask, “Why?”  This is a question a lot of people around the world are asking quite often these days…

  • “Why are terrorists beheading and torturing people in the name of their religion?”
  • “Why am I – or people I love – sick, injured, mentally challenged, suffering from dementia, handicapped in some way, or struggling in some manner?”
  • “Why are we being pounded with seemingly unending weather systems that disrupt our daily routines and livelihood?”
  • “Why are there abused and orphaned children, homeless people, and puppy mills?”
  • “Why did my loved one have to die?”
  • “Why can’t we all get along?”
  • “Why are there people who refuse to believe in You and serve You?”
  • “Why can’t I seem to find You?”
We believe that if only we had answers to these questions, life would be so much better…easier…more manageable.  But this is the polar opposite to what God shows us in this scripture passage.  It’s as if He says, “Stop!  Take a breath and trust Me!  I know what I am doing!  This is not supposed to make sense now…but it will someday - I promise!”

I get it…this is a really tough pill to swallow – especially in light of these very plausible and seemingly reasonable questions.  And God is not upset that we ask Him these things…only that we don’t often trust His response.

You may not like God’s answer…and He understands that, too.  We’re not called to enjoy human tragedy and suffering, natural disasters, death and other maladies…but we ARE beckoned to believe God’s promises and trust Him to deliver on them.  He will accomplish all He set out to provide…and the results will be prosperous – and perfect.

Whatever your “Why?” today…God has a good answer.  Our challenge is to embrace His plans with confidence and to seek His “harvest” even among life’s “storms”.  Are you ready to trust God and embrace His “higher thoughts”?  Will this be the day that you begin?

Isaiah 53:6
We—every one of us—have strayed away like sheep! We, who left God’s paths to follow our own. Yet God laid on him the guilt and sins of every one of us!

We have all heard stories of people who were falsely accused of crimes they did not commit – and imprisoned for them – only to be acquitted through DNA testing years later.  Sadly, I am sure that some of these persons were never vindicated…and some probably were put to death.  I’ve seen television interviews with more than one victim of false accusation…and many have looked their accusers squarely in the eye and forgiven them. While some of those who pointed the finger genuinely believed they “had the right guy”, I still marvel at the grace and compassion of the accused who could say, “It’s alright…I understand…and I do not begrudge you.”

Were I to cause someone else to take punishment that he/she did not deserve, I imagine that I would be greatly grieved by this.  And hopefully, you would feel the same way.  But we don’t seem to understand that this is our exact relationship with Jesus!  All of the horrific things that happened to Him are a direct result of OUR sins and wrongdoings.  While none of us would stand up and say, “HE did it!  Punish HIM!”…this is essentially what we do every day.  God sent Jesus to take our sins…to stand in the gap for us and take on our guilts – and the consequences.  And Jesus says, “It’s okay…I still love you.”

I am astounded that someone to Whom I have been so ugly could be so loving and kind.  I cannot comprehend the grace, mercy and forgiveness of Someone who suffered so greatly in my stead.  I cannot fathom that He would want a fellowship with ME!  But this is in fact the case.  We – who left God’s path to follow our own – are loved, loved, LOVED by Him…and He is available to us 24/7!

Let this soak into your soul today. As you make the choices of your day, consider the ramifications – and consequences – of each. Think of Jesus suffering for your guilts and sins…and check your words and actions accordingly.  God is always with us...even when we are acting in a manner that causes Him to suffer.  Don’t you think we owe it to Him to at least try to live up to His love and care?

Isaiah 49:8-10
God also says:

“When the time’s ripe, I answer you.
When victory’s due, I help you.
I form you and use you
to reconnect the people with me,
To put the land in order,
to resettle families on the ruined properties.
I tell prisoners, ‘Come on out. You’re free!’
and those huddled in fear, ‘It’s all right. It’s safe now.’
There’ll be foodstands along all the roads,
    picnics on all the hills—
Nobody hungry, nobody thirsty,
shade from the sun, shelter from the wind,
For the Compassionate One guides them,
takes them to the best springs.

One of the questions little kids ask a lot is, “When?” We adults hear countless questions, like… “When will lunch be ready?  When can I go outside?  When can I get up from this ‘rest’?  When will I be big enough?" and “When will this be over?”  And our answer is pretty much always…”When it’s the right time.”

Isn’t it interesting that we understand the concept of “timing” when we are talking to little children…but when we want something from God - all bets are off! And let’s be honest…we often get aggravated when God doesn’t answer as quickly as we would like – or in the manner we preferred!  We start to make assumptions about how He must not care about us…we are being punished for something…or that our prayers are not reaching Him.  And none of these are anywhere near the truth.

Read this passage again.  “When the time’s ripe, I answer you.”  Hear these words…”When victory’s due, I help you.” God truly is the “parent” – or “adult” – and we are the child.  And just as small children must learn patience and trust, we must develop these same characteristics in our fellowship with our Heavenly Father.

This is a rich passage.  The message is hopeful and encouraging…positive and purposeful.  God is with us…He is feeding us, sheltering us, and meeting our every need…in His perfect timing! How we respond and react defines our relationship…and our Christian discipleship.  What are your words and actions saying about your faith?

Hebrews 4:12
What God has said isn’t only alive and active! It is sharper than any double-edged sword. His word can cut through our spirits and souls and through our joints and marrow, until it discovers the desires and thoughts of our hearts.

Scripture taken from the Contemporary English Version © 1991,1992, 1995 by American Bible Society, Used by Permission.

I’ve watched several “reality shows” about people who live “off the grid” in Alaska. Much of their time is spent stockpiling and preparing food…not because they are gluttons, but merely enough to survive the harshest part of the winter months.  In one episode, a couple had pretty well depleted their supply of meat, and there were still several weeks of winter left.  So they decided to go ice fishing.

The layer of ice atop the water was several inches thick.  Yet the couple knew that fish were swimming underneath.  If they could just penetrate this thick ice and drop some bait, they might be able to snag a few fish to sustain them for a few more days/weeks.  So they used picks and saws and created a hole in which to drop a line with some bait to lure fish underneath.

This is a rough illustration of how God works in our hearts. He knows what lies deep within our hearts. He also understands that many of us have built up a thick layer of defenses - and to some degree, we have hardened our hearts toward Him. We don’t receive all that He wants to give us. He cannot reach us without some pretty drastic measures.

I don’t know about you, but I’m glad that God’s word is “sharper than any double-edged sword.”  I take comfort in knowing that He will go to such great lengths to pursue me…that He will even cut through my spirit, soul joints and marrow to touch the innermost depths of my heart.  I am in awe of such love and care…and when He “drops the bait”, I will gladly grab His “hook”!

Unlike the people who fish for meat to sustain them through a long winter, God does not need ME…but man-o-man, I surely need HIM!  So as He reaches out to me, I will gladly grab hold of His hand and hang on for dear life!  Even when I build a thick, icy wall of defense, God can still reach me.  And I am ever so happy to trust this.  Aren’t you?

Genesis 3:1
The serpent was the craftiest of all the creatures the Lord God had made. So the serpent came to the woman. “Really?” he asked. “None of the fruit in the garden? God says you mustn’t eat any of it?”

I saw a cartoon today that featured four women sitting poolside – cold drinks in hand.  The first one said, “It’s windy today!”  The second said, “No, it’s Thursday!”  The third said, “So am I!”, and the fourth said, “Waiter…another round!”

This is what happens when we don’t listen well…or we hear from the wrong source!  When there is a lot of “white noise” – or we are not fully “dialed in” to the Voice we are trying to hear – the devil takes full advantage.  He says, “Over here!  Listen to ME!”

So when God says, “Don’t judge others,” the devil says, “He didn’t mean those ‘people of Wal-Mart!’  Even GOD would admit that they look ridiculous and deserved to be ridiculed!”  When God says, “That person is my child, just like you…his/her thoughts and feelings are important to me”…the devil says, “There’s no way that this person could matter to God as much as you…he/she is dirty and/or poor…he/she is skinny/fat/ugly, from another race or ethnicity, practices an alternative lifestyle, and/or supports candidates and platforms from the ‘other’ party!”

When God says, “Your body is my temple. You offend me when you overeat, smoke, drink too much, use drugs recreationally, and participate in other abuses…” the devil says, “Oh…that’s only if you do these things to EXCESS!  A little won’t hurt anything!”  When God says, “I should be more important to you than anything or anyone else”…the devil tells you, “God wants you to enjoy your life…He didn’t intend for you to sacrifice your family and friends, your job, or your belongings! He expects you to take care of yourself…then give Him what you can!”

When God tells us “It’s Thursday,” we often hear the devil say, “I’m thirsty”…and we “order another drink!”  We are not hearing from God…we really don’t even know where He fits into our lives.  We have become so distracted by the “white noise”…and the devil has gladly created this chaos to confuse us!  It’s time to “dial in” to God again…to turn back the noise and the distractions, and to focus on Him, so that we are always certain that we hear His voice when He speaks to us.

Our fellowship with God doesn’t just happen…we have to make the effort to stay connected…and sometimes, this takes a lot of work on our part.  How are you doing these days?  Are you sure you are hearing from God…or has that crafty ole devil stolen your attention?

Genesis 22:15-18
The angel of God spoke from Heaven a second time to Abraham: “I swear—God’s sure word!—because you have gone through with this, and have not refused to give me your son, your dear, dear son, I’ll bless you—oh, how I’ll bless you! And I’ll make sure that your children flourish—like stars in the sky! like sand on the beaches! And your descendants will defeat their enemies. All nations on Earth will find themselves blessed through your descendants because you obeyed me.”

We took Timothy to the high school basketball game last night.  As we walked to our seats, we met our sixth-grade friend, Sarah Grace.  She threw open her arms and said, “Timothy!  Come and give me a hug!”  We also met a cheerleader named Raney who smiled sweetly and talked to Timothy about learning to cheer someday. He saw teachers and aides from school and called out to them, and they smiled and waved.

Every time someone acknowledged this little 5-year-old boy, he took notice.  He observed how these people treated him – and others.  And it mattered.  Whether they knew it or not, each one of these persons had an opportunity to represent God and His love and care to this little boy.  And we have that same opportunity each and every day.  What we do matters…what we say to others – what we do for them…how we react to other people…makes a difference – to them, AND to God!

I don’t expect God to call on any of us to take our child to a rock and raise a knife over him/her in obedience and demonstration of our devotion.  I don’t believe that we will have to “sacrifice our first-born” in order to feel His presence or to hear from Him.  But what we say and do matters…to others AND to God…today – and for all Eternity!  Are you making a mark in this world – and feeling God’s presence in the process?  Are you demonstrating His love and care – and finding Him as you do so?  Isn’t it about time you did?

Genesis 1:1-2
First this: God created the Heavens and Earth—all you see, all you don’t see. Earth was a soup of nothingness, a bottomless emptiness, an inky blackness. God’s Spirit brooded like a bird above the watery abyss.

Scripture quotations from The Message. © 1993, 1994, 1995, 1996, 2000, 2001, 2002 by Eugene Peterson.  Used by permission of NavPress, Colorado Springs, CO.  All rights reserved.

Last night, Timothy played for more than an hour with a box of mis-matched Legos® that I picked up several years ago at a yard sale.  Included in the box were little instruction booklets on how to construct quite a few objects.  The trouble is…this “bargain” assortment of pieces does not include everything necessary to construct even one of those things.  That did not stop Timothy from settling on a helicopter and asking, “Can you make this for me?”

He patiently showed me the steps in the booklet. ”We need this…and then this…” he noted, pointing to the photos and the required pieces. Some we found in the convoluted contents of the box…others we did not.  After almost an hour of digging and “creative modification,” we had a passable helicopter.  We stared into the “abyss” of that box of Legos® …and yes, we brooded a bit.  But we were determined - I was determined - to create SOMETHING that would make this little boy happy… and make me happy in the process.

God has always cared about us.  Even when He stared into the black abyss of nothingness that would become the earth, He envisioned a creation.  Would it be perfect?  Absolutely not…and God knew that!  But He longed to see us anyway…to behold our smiling faces and share in our lives – the good, the bad, and the ugly.  He was determined to do whatever He needed to make this happen, because He loves us so dearly.

You probably have some understanding of what it means to love someone so much that you want to please them…to see their smile and share in their joy and well-being.  Now multiply that times a zillion…and you still don’t get how much God loves us…how deeply He desires great things for us.  He started with nothing…an inky blackness…a watery abyss…and He created our world – and us.  And He is here with us now, wherever – and in whatever condition we may find ourselves.  Don’t you feel His presence?!

Ephesians 3:14-19
My response is to get down on my knees before the Father, this magnificent Father who parcels out all heaven and earth. I ask him to strengthen you by his Spirit—not a brute strength but a glorious inner strength—that Christ will live in you as you open the door and invite him in. And I ask him that with both feet planted firmly on love, you’ll be able to take in with all followers of Jesus the extravagant dimensions of Christ’s love. Reach out and experience the breadth! Test its length! Plumb the depths! Rise to the heights! Live full lives, full in the fullness of God.

Scripture quotations from The Message. © 1993, 1994, 1995, 1996, 2000, 2001, 2002 by Eugene Peterson.  Used by permission of NavPress, Colorado Springs, CO.  All rights reserved.

Studies have shown that maintaining body strength and muscle tone is important as we age.  I try to get to the pool three times a week for a workout and to swim some laps to strengthen my arms, legs, lungs and “inner core”.  I know people who are far more dedicated than I am and spend several hours each day working on their body strength and muscle tone.  And all of this is great…and important for the long haul!

But if you look at this passage carefully, Paul talks about a “glorious inner strength”, which comes from the Holy Spirit.  By inviting Jesus Christ into our hearts and minds...and spending time in His presence…we develop our inner strength.  This allows us to fully experience the extravagance of Jesus’ love…to test the length, plumb the depths, and rise to the heights with Him…and to share this with others in a profound way.

Just as brute muscle strength doesn’t happen without hard work, we must exercise our faith to obtain inner strength and fully experience the presence of God and His Holy Spirit.  How dedicated are you to this goal?  How hard are you working to build your Spiritual “inner core”?  Is God’s presence in your life all that you long for…all that it should be?  Will this be the day that you develop a new workout plan and aim higher, deeper and broader with Christ?

Are you ready to build some “muscle” that matters?  Will this be the day you get started?

Ecclesiastes 7:20
And there is not a single man in all the earth who is always good and never sins.

The Living Bible copyright © 1971 by Tyndale House Foundation. Used by permission of Tyndale House Publishers Inc., Carol Stream, Illinois 60188. All rights reserved.

Recently, I was called for jury duty.  I was not actually seated on the jury, but I did have to sit through a few hours of “interview” in which both the prosecuting and defense attorneys outlined the case and made determinations about the qualifications of prospective jurors.  The defendant – a 34-year-old man – was charged with robbing a McDonald’s employee at gunpoint, then attacking two witnesses with a knife.  I read news reports later that stated the man was convicted on all counts and sentenced to over 50 years in prison.

In the blink of an eye, this young man’s life changed forever.  I have no idea what events led up to this situation.  I did not hear the arguments and testimonies presented in court.  Sitting with his attorneys in the courtroom, there was nothing extraordinary about this person's appearance…he did not have the “look” of a “criminal”.  Yet a jury of his peers apparently deemed him to be one.

In the eyes of the LORD, you and I are not all that different from this young man.  Okay…so we probably have not robbed someone at gunpoint…but we have sinned all the same.  We have lied, gossiped, said and done hurtful things, shown disrespect, stolen, and otherwise dishonored our relationship with God – and others.  In the blink of an eye, we have misspoken, stepped on someone’s toes, or done something we shouldn’t.

I have to wonder if the young man in the courtroom felt God’s presence, even as he was being sentenced to more than a half-century behind bars.  Do we still feel God’s presence when WE sin?  Because the truth of the matter is that God is still with us…still available…still ready to forgive and restore us. Jesus forgave a thief on the cross and welcomed him into Paradise.  No one knows us better than God…no one more fully understands our sinful nature than He.  That is why we read in Lamentations 3:22-23 that…“It is only the Lord’s mercies that have kept us from complete destruction. Great is his faithfulness; his loving-kindness begins afresh each day.”

Do not get confused…this is not a “free pass” to sin and then expect God to forgive you.  But whether you are having a “good” day…or you have already slipped up more times than you can count…God wants to redeem and restore you.  The key is to humble yourself before Him,  admit your mistakes, and genuinely commit to doing better. Wherever you are today…whatever is happening…God is only a whisper away.  Have you spoken with Him yet?  Isn’t it time you did?

Deuteronomy 6:5
Love God, your God, with your whole heart: love him with all that’s in you, love him with all you’ve got!

Scripture quotations from The Message. © 1993, 1994, 1995, 1996, 2000, 2001, 2002 by Eugene Peterson.  Used by permission of NavPress, Colorado Springs, CO.  All rights reserved.

In case you have been under a rock for the last few days, let me remind you that it’s almost Valentine’s Day!  Everywhere you turn, there are ads and information about this holiday…encouragements to order your flowers early…suggestions for the best chocolates or that perfect gift for your special love. Valentine’s Day is the biggest holiday of the year for many children. Believe it or not, this holiday trumps Christmas!  There is just something about all of those colorful little cards with sentiments of love and friendship that stirs a child’s heart and fills him/her with joy and excitement.

On the February 8th edition of CBS’s
Sunday Morning, comedian Jim Gaffigan presented a monologue about Valentine’s Day and how we’ve made such a big deal about ONE DAY each year on which we show our love to others.  He noted that we purchase cards with sentiments that we didn’t write and sign our names to them…we spend a lot of money on impractical things that we hope will adequately express to someone else how much we love and care for them.  He scoffs at the significance we have placed on this holiday and humorously reminds us to learn to make EVERY day a Valentine’s Day – and to shower our “beloved” with continual affection and devotion.

A friend recently shared an essay on Facebook in which the writer suggested that prayer helps us develop a deeper understanding of what God is telling us in scripture.  In other words, we become better able to “read between the lines”. And that is what I believe we can do with this verse from Deuteronomy 6.

When we love God with our whole heart – with all that is in us and all that we have – we increase our desire to be in His presence.  As we grow in our love and affection for Him, we desire to be continually in His presence – much like when we fall in love with our mortal “beloveds”.  As we strive to emulate the love of Christ to others, we become more aware of His constant companionship.  So to connect the dots…if you develop a deep, abiding, loving relationship with God, you will more clearly feel His presence in your life each and every day.  As you serve God and share Him with others, your “connection” to Him will strengthen.

When we make God our ultimate “Beloved”, every day is “Valentine’s Day”…and He is always with us.  How deep is your love for God these days?  Do you love Him with all you’ve got?  Have you “sent God a Valentine” lately? Don’t you think you should?

Deuteronomy 18:10-13
Don’t sacrifice your son or daughter. And don’t try to use any kind of magic or witchcraft to tell fortunes or to cast spells or to talk with spirits of the dead.

The Lord is disgusted with anyone who does these things, and that’s why he will help you destroy the nations that are in the land. Never be guilty of doing any of these disgusting things!

Scripture taken from the Contemporary English Version © 1991,1992, 1995 by American Bible Society, Used by Permission.

The media is buzzing over what was apparently false news reporting by NBC Nightly News anchor Brian Williams, who has admitted that he exaggerated his involvement in an incident in 2003 that involved military helicopters and soldiers he accompanied during the opening weeks of the war in Iraq.  If you are like a lot of people, you’ve been a little disappointed – and surprised – by this disclosure.  After all, we “welcome” these news anchors into our homes each evening – and let’s be honest – we make them “like family” and trust them to deliver the news with integrity and accuracy.

We ought to know better, but it’s human nature to want to believe these people. And it’s no different for many who desperately want to hear a “medium” tell them that their mother or father is “stepping forward with a message” from beyond.  Who wouldn’t like to think that their dearly departed loved one is standing beside them saying, “Everything is okay.”  When these people who claim to hear from “Spirit”, ask a few questions and seem to divulge information that only you could know, some are convinced that they truly are hearing from those on “the other side”.

Many of us have attached significance to rituals and practices of the church that erroneously elevate these to a level that God did not ordain.  God is no more present at the altar of your church sanctuary than in your home, your car, or at your favorite fishing hole.  The act of giving up something for Lent or fasting doesn’t necessarily make one more holy – or even draw you closer to God.  These are not bad – or wrong – practices.  But we must carefully examine our motives and the context and make sure that we are not seeking God in something because it makes us feel good about our faith.

When we fully unpack all of this, we see that the pervading desire is to draw closer to God…to find Him and hear from Him in a personal, significant way.  And we don’t need witchcraft, sacrifices, rituals or communication with the dead to accomplish this.  We’ve made so much of our faith into something that is not what God planned…so it’s no wonder that we have trouble finding Him!

The time has come for us to simplify…to reduce the “white noise” and outside voices…and truly spend some time in the still and quiet of God’s presence.  Make the effort – and for many, it will be just that – to shut out the world for a few minutes and just “be” with God.  Open your Bible and let God’s word speak to you – the Psalms are a great place to begin. Start a dialog with God…simply say, “Come Holy Spirit”…and invite Him to commence the conversation. Even if your mind wanders at first, direct your attention back to God and this quiet moment, and learn to connect with Him in a new and profound way.

Many of us are looking for truth in all the wrong places…the news media, friends and acquaintances, celebrities, elected officials, and even church leaders.  While a lot of these folks truly are “good” people…even faith-filled Christians…they are all human – and imperfect.  God is calling us to count on Him as our compass…not the world.  He is ready, willing and more than able to meet us right where we are, but we have to give Him our full attention and devotion.  Are you seeking His will and His word?  Are you looking in the right places for God?  Isn’t it time you were?

February 8 ~ Colossians 1:9-12
Be assured that from the first day we heard of you, we haven’t stopped praying for you, asking God to give you wise minds and spirits attuned to his will, and so acquire a thorough understanding of the ways in which God works. We pray that you’ll live well for the Master, making him proud of you as you work hard in his orchard. As you learn more and more how God works, you will learn how to do your work. We pray that you’ll have the strength to stick it out over the long haul—not the grim strength of gritting your teeth but the glory-strength God gives. It is strength that endures the unendurable and spills over into joy, thanking the Father who makes us strong enough to take part in everything bright and beautiful that he has for us.

Scripture quotations from The Message. © 1993, 1994, 1995, 1996, 2000, 2001, 2002 by Eugene Peterson.  Used by permission of NavPress, Colorado Springs, CO.  All rights reserved.

We went to the park to play after church and lunch, and of course, the children wanted to swing.  I think Timothy and Zola love swings as much as any children I’ve ever known.  Today, Zola said, “I’ll swing myself!”  She was adamant…until she could not make herself go back and forth as she had hoped. Try as she might to “push and pull”, the swing stayed pretty well stationary…and she called for some help to get the swing going!

When it comes to our relationship with God, we are a lot like the little kid who wants to do it all herself.  We ought to be able to figure it all out on our own.  We have a Bible…we know how to pray…what else is needed?  There are two parts to the answer:  1) developing our faith and fellowship with God takes time and practice… and 2) one of the greatest blessings of being a Christian lies in the support of fellow believers.  So as others pray for us and encourage us in our understanding of God and communion with Him, we are strengthened and nurtured.  Our wisdom, discernment, and confidence grow.  We find joy in the love and fellowship of brothers and sisters in Christ who join us in corporate and collective worship.

There is nothing wrong with needing a little “push” from time to time.  All Christians need an occasional cheerleader - and the prayers of their fellow believers.  Take joy and comfort in knowing that others pray for you and undergird your efforts to walk with Christ.  Pay it forward by praying for your fellow Christians and offering them encouragement and insight whenever possible and/or appropriate.

As we grow in our faith, we become more able to “swing ourselves”…but we all still enjoy a little push from a friend once in a while.  Who’s giving you the inspiration and support you need these days…and who are you uplifting in return?

2 Timothy 4:1-5
I can’t impress this on you too strongly. God is looking over your shoulder. Christ himself is the Judge, with the final say on everyone, living and dead. He is about to break into the open with his rule, so proclaim the Message with intensity; keep on your watch. Challenge, warn, and urge your people. Don’t ever quit. Just keep it simple.

You’re going to find that there will be times when people will have no stomach for solid teaching, but will fill up on spiritual junk food—catchy opinions that tickle their fancy. They’ll turn their backs on truth and chase mirages. But you—keep your eye on what you’re doing; accept the hard times along with the good; keep the Message alive; do a thorough job as God’s servant.

Several months before my Mam-ma Polly moved to an Assisted Living Facility, I had to tell her that she could no longer make peanut brittle – her “signature dish” – by herself.  I allowed that she could possibly make the candy when another adult was there to do the heavy lifting while she supervised.  She reluctantly agreed…but I also knew that she continued to stir up a batch of the molten-lava-like substance when I wasn’t around…whether others were present or not.

During this time, I spotted not so much as one peanut or a bottle of corn syrup in her house…yet I could smell the freshly cooked candy as soon as I entered her garage.  I heard “through the grapevine” about the box of this delectable treat that was mailed to a friend in Missouri shortly before Christmas. She made little “aside” comments about the candy she had given to her hairdresser and others…and I knew the sweet treats didn’t make themselves!

When I read this passage, one line stuck out to me…”God is looking over your shoulder.”  God sees us when we think He is not watching…when we dabble in things we shouldn’t – even if those things are “church things” – like the latest craze in worship music or Bible study/teaching…or even catchy concepts like “prosperity religion” that are considered acceptable by many.  God sees us when we judge others – both publicly and privately.  He knows what is in our heart about EVERYTHING!  This should make us think twice about many of the things we say and do…but sadly, many of us are able to momentarily put Him out of our mind.  Just as my grandmother did as she pleased when I was not there to fuss at her…we often pretend that God is not there and go on our merry way.

But here’s another “take” on this sentence…and the one that really resonated with me today.  God is looking over your shoulder!  So when I am wondering which way to turn…He’s right there to guide me.  When I am sick and need a healing touch, God is already providing it.  When I enjoy the warm sunshine of a beautiful spring-like day in early February and almost feel giddy, God jumps for joy right alongside me.  I don’t have to wonder where God is.  He is looking over my shoulder…carrying me when my burdens are too heavy to bear alone… reveling in my victories and sharing my happiness.

As humans, we all have moments when we wish God would look away…that He would not see what we were about to do or hear the words that we were speaking.  But aren’t we glad to know that He is always there?  In the long run, doesn’t it give you hope, peace and joy to know that God is looking over your shoulder?  And doesn’t it strengthen your resolve to please him – always and in all ways?  Will this be the day that you renew your commitment to do just that?  Don’t you think it should be?

2 Timothy 3:16-17
The whole Bible was given to us by inspiration from God and is useful to teach us what is true and to make us realize what is wrong in our lives; it straightens us out and helps us do what is right. It is God’s way of making us well prepared at every point, fully equipped to do good to everyone.

Before noon today, I had already searched the Internet for answers to a couple of questions…”Why isn’t my garbage disposal draining properly?” and “Is it safe to take OTC cold medication after the expiration date on the box?”  Without a second thought, I find myself turning to Google to solve many questions that arise each day…and I bet you do, too!  We have become accustomed to hearing “I saw this on Pinterest”…or “I learned how to do this on YouTube!”

Don’t you find it funny that for the really important questions in life, we often stumble around, wring our hands, and wonder what we should do?  While the Internet has wonderful tools for answering virtually any question, a lot of the answers to issues of the heart and soul will point you back to a resource you have most likely had in your possession all along – God’s Word. Websites like http://biblegateway.com can help you find the scriptures that answer these questions more quickly…and I encourage you to use them.  But at the end of the day, the response to many of our truly important questions…the guidance that will make us “well prepared at every point, fully equipped to do good to everyone” is right in front of us – or on our desk, a nightstand, or bookshelf.

When Greg and I went to college, the Gideons handed gave each student a small Bible that contained the New Testament, Psalms and Proverbs.  We still have those little Bibles today.  Inside, there is an index for scriptures that address such things as…where to find help when afraid, anxious, backsliding, bereaved, faith fails, friends fail, leaving home, lonely, thankful, weary, worried…and many more.  There is an index for scriptures on Christian virtues and character that leads to passages on everything from abundant life and cleanliness to honesty, labor, obedience, perseverance, sincerity, and victory.

Even with the Internet, I still find this “hand-held device” to be invaluable.  I cannot count the number of times I have used this little “Gideon Bible” to find God in a specific set of circumstances.  I encourage you to pick up a Bible – or to use one of the Bible resources online – and see for yourself how God answers the questions of your day.

You can argue whether the Bible is literally the word of God…or His inspiration through those who wrote it.  For me, the answer that matters is that God uses the words of this Book to guide my daily living.  I may not figure out how to unclog my disposal or plan a Valentine party …but He will show me how to find the answers to these questions – and so much more – with grace, patience, and confidence.  The ultimate “Search Engine” is right in front of you.  Isn’t it time you opened the Book and discovered God’s answers for your life?

2 Timothy 1:7-10
God doesn’t want us to be shy with his gifts, but bold and loving and sensible.

So don’t be embarrassed to speak up for our Master or for me, his prisoner. Take your share of suffering for the Message along with the rest of us. We can only keep on going, after all, by the power of God, who first saved us and then called us to this holy work. We had nothing to do with it. It was all his idea, a gift prepared for us in Jesus long before we knew anything about it. But we know it now. Since the appearance of our Savior, nothing could be plainer: death defeated, life vindicated in a steady blaze of light, all through the work of Jesus.

A dear friend posted a photo on Facebook yesterday of two darling young children…a twin brother and sister who appeared to be sharing a secret.  These children were her nephew and niece, who celebrated their 50th birthdays in June.  In late August, my friend’s nephew suffered a heart attack and died.  Shortly before Thanksgiving, his sister was diagnosed with cancer…and she joined him in heaven on February 3rd. My friend lost her own son almost 20 years ago when he was only 17.  She told me… “I know how much it hurt to lose one...CAN.NOT.IMAGINE losing two [children] within 5 months!”

I know that others understand this grief, as well…my thoughts went immediately to the family of two sons in their 60s who died last year within six months of each other.  I’ve seen the toll these losses took on their mother, father, sister and others.  And I know that in both families, many must be asking where God could possibly be found amidst such heartache.

The Apostle Paul writes to Timothy from a prison cell, where he was no doubt subjected to countless indignities – if not outright torture.  He reminds Timothy of the anguish of Jesus on our behalf and suggests that we must “take our share of the suffering” as His children.  In other words, the world will be watching to see how we handle tragedy and heartache…and God will be right beside us to help us handle every minute of it.  Paul does not discount how difficult or challenging this will be for us…but he does remind us that Jesus undergirds our efforts with Supernatural strength to “suffer” all things.

I am so proud of how my friends in both of these families are handling the tremendous grief and heartache that has befallen them.  They have not turned their backs on God…they have embraced Him all the more as they seek His strength and comfort.  I know that their demonstration of His power and presence has influenced countless onlookers - including me!

God never leaves us!  He understands when we cry out to Him and ask for His help…when we admit that we are heartbroken and/or suffering.  He hears our petitions…and He meets us wherever we happen to be at any particular moment.  OUR JOB is to speak up…to demonstrate our faith and confidence in God’s power to handle all circumstances...and to recognize His presence in every situation.

Are you wondering where God is today? My guess is that He is standing right beside you – or holding you securely in His arms - ready to minister to your every need with perfection.  Will this be the day that you give Him a chance to do so?

2 Peter 3:18
Let the wonderful kindness and the understanding that come from our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ help you to keep on growing. Praise Jesus now and forever! Amen.

When Greg visited our little nephews and niece recently, Timothy placed his bare foot against his Uncle Greg’s foot and lamented that “my foot will never be that big.” Greg assured Timothy that his foot would indeed grow…and that he would possibly even have bigger feet than any of us someday.  In his best five-year-old effort to elicit sympathy, Timothy bemoaned that he was not growing and would never be big.

While I am quite certain that this now-tall-and-skinny little boy will someday be even taller – and “filled out” – I couldn’t help but think that a lot of us have somewhat “frozen” in place as Christians.  We are stuck a position akin to an undersized child who has not experienced a “growth spurt”.  And just as a child’s growth is fueled by proper nutrition, adequate sleep and exercise, and positive nurture and encouragement…our Spiritual growth comes from a steady diet of God’s word, exercising our faith through prayer and service to others, and rest in the promises and blessings He bestows upon us.

Many of the ladies who have nurtured me in life are now in their 80s…and some are even approaching their 90s.  Yet they still attend Bible studies.  They continue to fellowship with other believers and serve God in whatever manner He directs them.  They still strive to learn more about God and His will for their lives.  My Mam-ma Polly studied the scriptures well into her 100th year. I read her favorite, underlined passages to her even in her last hours of life on this earth.  She served others to the best of her ability until just a few months before her passing at age 100+!

We are never too old to stop learning and growing in the LORD.  While there will come a day for all of us when we wish to stop developing, physically…the sky is the limit for our faith and understanding of God and His will for our lives.  Have you stopped learning and increasing in your faith?  Will this be the day that you give your fellowship with God a “kick-start” and “get growing” again?  Don’t you think it should be?

2 Corinthians 6:14-18
Don’t become partners with those who reject God. How can you make a partnership out of right and wrong? That’s not partnership; that’s war. Is light best friends with dark? Does Christ go strolling with the Devil? Do trust and mistrust hold hands? Who would think of setting up pagan idols in God’s holy Temple? But that is exactly what we are, each of us a temple in whom God lives. God himself put it this way:

“I’ll live in them, move into them; I’ll be their God and they’ll be my people. So leave the corruption and compromise; leave it for good,” says God. “Don’t link up with those who will pollute you. I want you all for myself. I’ll be a Father to you; you’ll be sons and daughters to me.” The Word of the Master, God.

Someone once gave my mother-in-law a box of fine chocolates from Scotland.  “You must try them!” she insisted to Greg and me.  The trouble is…I’m allergic to chocolate.  “One little taste can’t hurt!” she suggested.  Greg responded…”It might only put her in the ER and not the actual hospital!”

Thankfully, I am not one of those people who can merely inhale the aroma of chocolate or corn (my other allergen) and start to have an anaphylactic reaction.  But an accidental sampling of either can sometimes cause a case of hives or give me stomach cramps - or even make areas of my body redden and swell.  So I do all I can to avoid these triggers, and I make sure that I take an antihistamine every day.

Paul is explaining to the Corinthians that we can’t have “just a smidge” of our old life. We can’t sample “just a taste” of the life we had without Christ and maintain a healthy, pure and complete relationship with God.  You cannot share your heart with God…AND the devil!

If you have found yourself wondering where God is…if you have questioned your relationship with Him in recent days/weeks/months and wondered what happened…search your heart and see where you may be sampling “just a taste” of your life “BC” – before Christ became the Lord of your life.  Let your commitment and devotion to your fellowship with God serve as a “daily dose” of protection and care against the devil’s attempts to lure you away.

God is not in the business of sharing with the devil…He wants us all for Himself.  When we reciprocate, we will find that He has been with us all along…waiting for us to “come clean” and fully commit to Him.  Will this be the day that you renew your efforts?  As the adage says, “If you don’t feel close to God…guess who moved!”

1 Timothy 2:1-4
The first thing I want you to do is pray. Pray every way you know how, for everyone you know. Pray especially for rulers and their governments to rule well so we can be quietly about our business of living simply, in humble contemplation. This is the way our Savior God wants us to live.

He wants not only us but everyone saved, you know, everyone to get to know the truth we’ve learned: that there’s one God and only one...

Like many people, I am a multi-tasker.  Most mornings, I eat my breakfast while “watching” the news and scrolling through messages on my computer and/or “reading” the daily newspaper.  I listen to television while I sew, iron and fold laundry, or cook dinner. And I will admit that, at best, I only see/hear about two-thirds of what I “view”.

There are some programs that I must sit and watch while I do nothing else, in order to catch everything that is said and done. Otherwise, I find myself backing up and viewing certain scenes again.  The “pause” and “rewind” buttons on the remote come in handy quite often as I attempt to do several things at once and keep up with what is being aired.

All of us are susceptible to constant distractions…and nowhere is this more evident than in our Spiritual lives.  The devil loves to get us off track…to fill our plates with all sorts of responsibilities and “noise” so that we have trouble finding time to be still and listen for the voice of God.  Before you know it…we have distanced ourselves so far from Him and filled in the gaps with other things…and we wonder what happened – and where God went!

The Apostle Paul is telling Timothy – and us – two things:  1) pray every way you know how, so that you keep the lines of communication with God open; and 2) pray for others…that each person would stay focused and on task, so that we are free to do the things that God has designed for us without the distractions and additional baggage from others.  This sounds like a selfish motive…but actually, it is quite the opposite.

We cannot be in full fellowship with God when we are distracted or trying to do too much at once.  When we take on the duties and drama of others, our own ministries are often diluted.  Yes, we are to care about those in our midst…to serve God by serving them and offering love, grace, mercy, forgiveness, compassion, and more.  But God did not call us to be all things to all people.  He created a plan and a purpose for each of us.

So we must pray that each person does his/her part…in order that we might do ours.  There are no “pause” or “rewind” buttons for our faith.  We’re on “play” all the time.  Ask God to give you – and all of His children – focus and intention, so that we might be able to spread the Good News of Jesus with confidence and conviction. Find time to “be still and know God”…and discover what He really has to say.

Daily Devotional for February 1, 2015

1 Peter 3:18
Christ died once for our sins.
An innocent person died
    for those who are guilty.
Christ did this
    to bring you to God,
when his body
    was put to death
and his spirit
    was made alive.

I was fortunate enough to grow up in a “Mayberry-esque” community where the streets were literally safe enough to play in, and pretty well everyone knew everybody else.  I interacted with all four of my grandparents on an almost-daily basis.  I knew many of their friends well, and our neighbors were like extended family.

As the years have come and gone, many of these dear ones have passed away.  Often, there has been an estate sale or auction to liquidate their belongings.  While some might find this sad or morbid, I have attended many of these sales and purchased at least one item that could hold special meaning for me.  So I have nativities and Madonna figurines that once graced the shelves of people I knew and loved.  I serve my cakes and cookies on beautiful glass trays once were used by ladies who nurtured me as a youngster to serve refreshments to their guests and loved ones.  I have two “prayer books” that belonged to a dear local optometrist who sat on the pew in front of us at church for over a decade.

I know these are just “things”…but every time I look at them, I am reminded of the person to whom they once belonged.  In this manner, I carry their spirit in my heart.  This past Christmas, a stranger stopped me in the checkout line at Wal-Mart to admire a pin I was wearing on my coat.  It had belonged to my Mam-ma Polly.  For a brief moment, my grandmother was with me…I felt her presence and the warmth of her beautiful smile.  She loved her pretty pins, and I could almost hear HER acknowledging the compliment as I uttered a polite “Thank you!”

My point is that people often wonder where God is. Because God is not physically visible…because we cannot tangibly see or hear Him…many have a hard time feeling His presence.  But we are told in this verse from 1 Peter that when Jesus died in the flesh, His spirit was made alive…and He is very much with us in our hearts through the Holy Spirit.  Every time we see certain things or hear particular words…every time we read our Bible or sit and marvel at the intricacies of our children or a beautiful animal or plant, we are reminded of Him.

When we are saved from that distracted person who ran the red light and almost t-boned us at an intersection, we feel the presence of Jesus.  When we review a set of circumstances and events and can find no reasonable explanation for how or why they worked out so well, we can know that He was guiding each step of these incidents.

I treasure the reminders of those I knew and loved who are no longer physically present on this earth.  But even more, I cherish the daily reminders of Jesus – His amazing, incomprehensible love and care for me.  And I thank Him for the presence of His spirit and how He is so very alive and well within my heart.  Do you?
