1 Corinthians 16:2
On every Lord’s Day each of you should put aside something from what you have earned during the week, and use it for this offering. The amount depends on how much the Lord has helped you earn. Don’t wait until I get there and then try to collect it all at once.

When I was a little girl, our church gave a box of envelopes to every person in each family who were members.  There was one for each Sunday, and I think a box held enough envelopes for three months.  We were to put our “offering” in this envelope and take it to church on Sunday.  I’m sure there wasn’t much money in the envelopes for myself and my sister and brother…and I can remember a few times when we had nothing to put in and felt embarrassed.  When I took over caring for my Mam-ma Polly as she aged, I paid her “tithe” each month.  Mam-ma gave me her envelopes…almost the same ones as those from my childhood.  For a while, I put a check in the envelopes each week so that she could put on the collection plate…but she began to forget, and the envelopes collected in her purse!  So I started making a direct deposit each month.  When she would ask, “Did you send my tithe?” I would answer confidently, “Yes…it’s there.”

There are a lot of ways that I could go on this scripture passage, but what I want to emphasize today is not that we should give an envelope of money to the church each Sunday.  Rather, I would like to remind each of us that God wants us to be present and to give Him all we can each and every week.  If we have to set up some sort of “auto-draft” system for ourselves in order to serve Him, let’s do it!  The point is not to put off serving God until another day/week/month that seems better. In the words of the Apostle Paul, don’t wait until the end and try to collect your gifts to present all at once!

You know what I’m talking about.  We feel that gentle nudge from God to help someone or make a phone call, and we say, “I’ll do that later.”  And “later” never comes.  We say, “I would LOVE to serve in the soup kitchen or deliver Meals on Wheels” – or whatever it is that tugs at your heart…but we never do it.  This scripture is reminding us that NOW is the time to serve.  TODAY is the day to give!

I can assure you that none of us are assured another day on this earth…so procrastinating with our “giving” is simply not an option!  Use the “envelope” system or whatever helps you stay on track, but get busy giving in the name of Jesus!  When you meet Him face-to-face, be able to say, “I heard You calling, and I did my best to give my all.”  That’s the least we can do for the One who gave ALL for us, isn’t it?

1 Chronicles 29:10-20
Then, in front of everyone, David sang praises to the Lord:

I praise you forever, Lord! You are the God our ancestor Jacob worshiped. Your power is great, and your glory is seen everywhere in heaven and on earth. You are king of the entire world, and you rule with strength and power. You make people rich and powerful and famous. We thank you, our God, and praise you.

But why should we be happy that we have given you these gifts? They belong to you, and we have only given back what is already yours. We are only foreigners living here on earth for a while, just as our ancestors were. And we will soon be gone, like a shadow that suddenly disappears.

Our Lord God, we have brought all these things for building a temple to honor you. They belong to you, and you gave them to us. But we are happy, because everyone has voluntarily given you these things. You know what is in everyone’s heart, and you are pleased when people are honest. Always make us eager to give, and help us be faithful to you, just as our ancestors Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob faithfully worshiped you. And give Solomon the desire to completely obey your laws and teachings, and the desire to build the temple for which I have provided these gifts.

David then said to the people, “Now it’s your turn to praise the Lord, the God your ancestors worshiped!” So everyone praised the Lord, and they bowed down to honor him and David their king.

I’m in all-out decorating mode this week.  The children and I started Sunday afternoon, and I continued yesterday.  All semblance of “fall” has given way to Christmas, and a magical holiday wonderland is emerging.

I admit…I’m a big kid when it comes to Christmas, and I overdo it with the decorations.  But when I see the looks on the children’s faces, every single ornament, snowman and holly sprig is worth it. As they get older, the children are beginning to appreciate the dozens of nativity scenes I display in our piano room…and the different ornaments on the tree that have sentimental significance.  And of course, they love “their” tree, the lights, and the singing reindeer!

It is a LOT of work to put this all out…and then take it all down. And I’ll be honest…there was a huge part of me that wanted to just skip it all this year.  For the last decade or more, my mother did not put up a Christmas tree or decorate much at her house.  She would say…”I’ll just enjoy Debbie’s decorations.” There has been a lump in my throat as I set out some of her treasures that now are part of my collection…and a smile on my face as I remembered how much she enjoyed many of them - like a big golden Santa that was a gift from her friend, Branson entertainer Shoji Tabuchi.

I reminded myself this morning that this effort is a gift.  God gave us Jesus - and a zillion reasons to celebrate. We do all we can to maintain the focus on Jesus during this Christmas season…but even the secular decorations contribute to the overall joy and wonder of the holiday season.  In total, this transformation of our home says, “Something special is happening…we are celebrating the greatest birthday ever.”  We are “making a fuss” to let God know how grateful we are for His best Gift ever…Jesus Christ! And we are saying to others, “We love Jesus enough to celebrate His birth and share this joy and festivity with each of you!”

So I will finish the decorating.  I may not put out EVERYTHING this year (who am I kidding?!)…but I will make our home a “party palace for Jesus!”  I will give this gift to those who visit…and give the glory to God Almighty. I will praise the Lord and bow down to honor Him with every ornament and piece of tinsel. Let the celebration of Jesus’ birth begin! Now it’s your turn!

1 Chronicles 29:1-5
David told the crowd: God chose my son Solomon to build the temple, but Solomon is young and has no experience. This is not just any building—this is the temple for the Lord God! That’s why I have done my best to get everything Solomon will need to build it—gold, silver, bronze, iron, wood, onyx, turquoise, colored gems, all kinds of precious stones, and marble.

Besides doing all that, I have promised to give part of my own gold and silver as a way of showing my love for God’s temple. Almost one hundred twenty tons of my finest gold and over two hundred fifty tons of my silver will be used to decorate its walls and to make the gold and silver objects. Now, who else will show their dedication to the Lord by giving gifts for building his temple?

Last year, several events culminated in the lack of a leader for our church’s annual children’s Christmas program.  I told our Director of Music that I would gladly help…but I could not take on the role of leader, because of my mother’s illness.  If necessary, I wanted to be able to step aside at a moment’s notice - and not leave the children in limbo.  So my friend, Chris, who already leads the youth choir, agreed to take charge of this program. Chris and I make a pretty good team…and since I knew most of the children from Sunday school, my role as assistant was the perfect fit.

As time approached to begin practices this year, Chris and I once again agreed to handle the Christmas program.  However, shortly before the first rehearsal, Chris’s dad passed away. I let her know that I was willing to do more and “cover” for her, if needed. But Chris never missed a beat.  She says that having this program to command her focus has been helpful. A woman in our church who has experience with acting and public speaking stepped up to work with our children who have speaking parts. Once again, we are all working as a team to produce a program that is going to bless everyone involved. We are using our talents and abilities to give back to God.

In 1 Chronicles 29:1-5, David is telling the people of Israel that he has done his part to build this temple to glorify God.  Now he is asking them to do theirs by giving what they can.  Here is the important thing to note…David was rich, and plenty able to provide the finest gold and silver for decoration of the temple. A few others might have been equally rich…but many were not wealthy at all. Still, each one had something that he/she could contribute.  And this is the point for us.

Your greatest gift to God may not be money. It may not even be time or talent.  Your gift may be to pray for others and encourage them.  It may be to make phone calls, work in the kitchen, visit shut-ins, or text friends to ask, “How are you doing today?”  The point is that we ALL have SOMETHING to give to glorify God.  We just have to figure out what it is…and then start giving!

Last night at our children’s program practice, Timmy got out of his seat, came to me and gave me a big hug.  Later, my cousin messaged me to say that her little boy, Owen, had looked at a Christmas shirt I made him and said, “Debbie gives good stuff!”  These are two seven-year-olds who give some pretty good stuff themselves! And if little children can give what they are able to make life better for someone else and glorify God, don’t you think we ought to be able to do this?

Are you giving what you can – when and where you are able?  In this season of “Black Friday” and “Cyber Monday” - and picking out the perfect gift for Aunt Sue or that special someone in your life - shouldn’t we pause and consider our gifts to God?  After all, He gave US the perfect Gift in the form of His Son, Jesus Christ!

Are you doing your part…and giving “good stuff” for the glory of God?  Isn’t this the perfect time to begin?

Isaiah 25:1, 8-9
You, Lord, are my God!
    I will praise you
for doing the wonderful things
you had planned and promised
    since ancient times.

The Lord All-Powerful
will destroy the power of death
    and wipe away all tears.
No longer will his people
be insulted everywhere.
    The Lord has spoken!
At that time, people will say,
“The Lord has saved us!
    Let’s celebrate.
We waited and hoped—
    now our God is here.”
The powerful arm of the Lord
    will protect this mountain.

Scripture taken from the Contemporary English Version © 1991,1992, 1995 by American Bible Society, Used by Permission.

What a wonderful conversation I had this morning with 10 second and third graders…about heaven. Their ideas about what it will be like astounded me.  Many were “spot on” with scriptural descriptions of streets paved with gold and jewels.  Others talked about no tears or sadness...and one little girl said, “You won’t have to do anything, and that’s great – because I’m lazy!”  I shared my vision of the never-ending “heavenly table” and the feast we will have there…and they were duly impressed to think they could eat forever and never get full – or FAT!

We talked of how perfect heaven will be…and how blessed we are that God loves us enough to want us there with Him forever and ever!  Most of the children have lost a loved one in the last year - if not a family member, a close friend has passed.  It seemed like we all had at least one person near and dear to our hearts who is already sitting at the feet of Jesus and celebrating His amazing love and care, front and center!  We talked about how comforting that image is for us.

My goal this morning was to give the children a clear picture of how they can spend eternity in heaven with God and Jesus…and to give them hope about their eternal future.  I don’t think of heaven as a sad place at all…and apparently, neither do they!  And that’s a good thing!

So what about you?  Are you looking forward to your eternal home?  Are you doing what Jesus has commanded on this earth while He prepares a place for you at his heavenly table?  Have you surrendered your heart to Jesus and confessed your sins…and are you serving Him with every ounce of energy you can muster?

In the last four weeks, the children and I talked about angels, the devil, prayer, and heaven…and we used the Bible to answer a lot of questions about each of these topics.  We confirmed today that the devil is headed to hell…and we are doing all we can to spend eternity in Heaven. If seven- and eight-year-olds can do this, why can’t you?  Are you making every possible effort to secure that your eternal destination is heaven?  Have you thanked God for this amazing possibility and promise?  Isn’t it time you did?

Psalm 34:1-10
I will always praise the Lord. With all my heart, I will praise the Lord. Let all who are helpless, listen and be glad. Honor the Lord with me! Celebrate his great name.

I asked the Lord for help, and he saved me from all my fears.  Keep your eyes on the Lord! You will shine like the sun and never blush with shame.

I was a nobody, but I prayed, and the Lord saved me from all my troubles. If you honor the Lord, his angel will protect you.

Discover for yourself that the Lord is kind. Come to him for protection, and you will be glad.

Honor the Lord! You are his special people. No one who honors the Lord will ever be in need.

Young lions may go hungry or even starve, but if you trust the Lord, you will never miss out on anything good.

Scripture taken from the Contemporary English Version © 1991,1992, 1995 by American Bible Society, Used by Permission.

This month the 2nd-3rd graders and I have studied “the truth about angels and devils”…and learned about prayer.  Tomorrow, we will learn about heaven.  During one of the lessons, we read James 4:8…”Come near to God, and he will come near to you.” My assistant, Susan, reminded the children that when they feel the devil near them, all they have to do is “turn their back” on him and whisper the name, “Jesus!”  Jesus will come to their aid, and the devil will flee.

A few nights ago, I awoke suddenly, and my mind started racing.  I could not stop thinking about several things, and it occurred to me…”This is the devil trying to steal my sleep.”  I remembered Susan’s suggestion, and I began to repeatedly whisper, “Jesus…Jesus!”  A sense of calm and peace washed over me, and I soon felt fast asleep.  I prayed…and the LORD saved me from all of my troubles.  His angels came to protect me as I slept.

So often, we “suffer” needlessly.  We fail to reach out to God, Who is waiting to come to us and offer protection…to save us from all of our troubles and fears. Yes, we were “nobodies,” but God loved us enough to send Jesus to rescue us.  And when we call on His name, He will draw near and protect us – and meet our every need.

Psalm 34:10 talks of “young lions”…which is often a Biblical reference to Satan and his agents. At the very name of Jesus, these enemies wither and slink away in defeat.  Isn’t it time we whispered, “Jesus!” more often?  With all my heart, I will praise Him and celebrate His great name!

Honor the LORD with me…and learn to never be in need!  Let all who are helpless listen and be glad indeed! Kick the devil and his agents to the curb! Honor and praise the LORD…this day, and always.

Psalm 95:1-7
Sing joyful songs to the Lord!
    Praise the mighty rock
    where we are safe.
Come to worship him
with thankful hearts
    and songs of praise.
The Lord is the greatest God,
    king over all other gods.
He holds the deepest part
of the earth in his hands,
    and the mountain peaks
    belong to him.
The ocean is the Lord’s
    because he made it,
    and with his own hands
    he formed the dry land.
Bow down and worship
    the Lord our Creator!
The Lord is our God,
    and we are his people,
the sheep he takes care of
    in his own pasture.

Scripture taken from the Contemporary English Version © 1991,1992, 1995 by American Bible Society, Used by Permission.

I saw a meme on Facebook today with a photo background that featured the silhouettes of three men hanging from crosses. The caption read, “Only one Black Friday offers eternal savings.” Greg and I spent a lazy “Black Friday” mostly relaxing and watching football. We visited some family members, ate leftovers and commented about what a good Thanksgiving Day we had with everyone. We didn’t fight the crowds to shop.  We didn’t start putting up Christmas decorations. We just rested and counted our blessings.

The view out our back windows is a panorama of somewhat dulled color, due to the fall drought…but there are some bursts of yellow and red here and there. Every few trees it seems like God dipped his paintbrush in some brilliant yellow or orange paint and said, “Let me show you what I can do!”  A maple tree in our front yard is filled with bright yellow leaves – and about three clusters that are an incredibly deep hue of red!  God did this…just because He can!  He is full of surprises!

As we take a moment between “holiday seasons” to catch our breath and regroup, let’s spend some time remembering WHO is really in charge.  Who made the mountains and gave us beautiful fall color?  Who is responsible for our abundance and the freedoms that we enjoy?  Who formed us and granted us family, friends, and blessings on every side?  Who takes care of His people in His own pasture like none other?

The answer to all of these questions is God Almighty – the Lord our Creator!  And we should at least pause for a few minutes to worship Him…to sing His praises and give thanks for the safety and protection of His love and care.  We should acknowledge our abundance in the very fact that we are His. And we should be grateful that we belong to the King of all gods…which makes us heirs to His Kingdom for all eternity!

Before you get caught up in the hoopla of the coming holiday season, take a few more minutes to be deliberately grateful for God and all that He has given us.  Bow down and worship the Lord our Creator!  On THIS “Black Friday,” thank Him for the Black Friday that gave us eternal savings…and for His gift of the One who made this all possible.

Psalm 118:1-7; 27-28
Oh, thank the Lord, for he’s so good! His loving-kindness is forever.

Let the congregation of Israel praise him with these same words: “His loving-kindness is forever.” And let the priests of Aaron chant, “His loving-kindness is forever.” Let the Gentile converts chant, “His loving-kindness is forever.”

In my distress I prayed to the Lord, and he answered me and rescued me. He is for me! How can I be afraid? What can mere man do to me? The Lord is on my side; he will help me. Let those who hate me beware.

Jehovah God is our light. I present to him my sacrifice upon the altar, for you are my God, and I shall give you this thanks and this praise. Oh, give thanks to the Lord, for he is so good! For his loving-kindness is forever.

Last Thanksgiving Day, things were so different for my family.  Greg’s brother was alive and well and celebrating with his family.  My mother was battling ovarian cancer…but she was able to dine with us at our table and visit for a few hours afterward.  Now, both of these loved ones are feasting at God’s Heavenly Table…and that doesn’t seem possible – or right!

Last year, Mother wrote a Thanksgiving week blog post in which she noted: “This year, my 76th Thanksgiving, is totally different. I have cancer—an unwelcome and unexpected guest. I cannot host my family around my dining table. My Thanksgiving apron hung limp, not worn this year. However, my older daughter and her husband picked up the tradition. On Thanksgiving Day, we gathered around their dining table in their beautiful home perched on a bluff overlooking [the] Little Red River and Greers Ferry Dam that holds the water back in an expanse of clear blue water.”

“For the first time in my adult life, I was only expected to be present. I did not prepare the dressing, the pecan pie, or the turkey breast. But I am so thankful to have one more Thanksgiving with my loved ones; three little great-grandchildren who keep the holiday lively. A nephew and his wife traveled from Northwest Arkansas to be with us. Thanksgiving was a special day—one in which to give thanks to our Lord. Hopefully, next year, I can once again take my Thanksgiving apron from its hook and help to prepare our feast.”

Mother did not get to pick up that apron for this Thanksgiving…but the cousins drove down to be with us again.  And my immediate family is gathered together for a Thanksgiving feast and visit.  We are still standing…and we are incredibly grateful and thankful.

I lost count of the number of dear friends of ours who have lost a parent, spouse or sibling since this time last year.  Maybe I am more aware, but it seems like a lot of people are in the same boat as we are.  A few days ago, God gave me a beautiful vision.  I have been cooking for our meal for three days or more…and God showed me a lavish Thanksgiving table in heaven.  My parents were seated there, along with my brother, grandparents, my cousins, aunts, uncles, Greg’s dad and brother and HIS grandparents and extended family.

Neighbors, friends, and people from around our community and beyond who were an integral part of our lives were there, also.  There was such an abundance of food…and people lingered and laughed and visited.  Jesus moved in and among the group, sitting first one place and then another.  There was no sadness…and nobody was worried about calories – or anything else!  Did I mention that there was a lot of laughter?

I very plainly heard God tell me, “Someday, you will be here, too…and it will be glorious. Meanwhile, you have people to ‘feed’ where you are…things to do…and an important purpose.”  I was flooded with peace and comfort by this thought…and I have shared it with several loved ones who are missing their own “people” this holiday.

We have so much for which to be thankful…especially Jesus and the promise of heaven because of His sacrifice on the cross.  Someday, we WILL be there, too…and it WILL be glorious.  Meanwhile, God’s lovingkindness makes life on earth bearable – and pretty great most days – like this one!  For this, I give thanks – today, and always. What about you?

Psalm 138
Thank you! Everything in me says “Thank you!”
Angels listen as I sing my thanks.
I kneel in worship facing your holy temple
and say it again: “Thank you!”
Thank you for your love,
    thank you for your faithfulness;
Most holy is your name,
    most holy is your Word.
The moment I called out, you stepped in;
you made my life large with strength.
When they hear what you have to say, God,
all earth’s kings will say “Thank you.”
They’ll sing of what you’ve done:
“How great the glory of God!”
And here’s why: God, high above, sees far below;
no matter the distance, he knows everything about us.
When I walk into the thick of trouble,
keep me alive in the angry turmoil.
With one hand
    strike my foes,
With your other hand
    save me.
Finish what you started in me, God.
Your love is eternal—don’t quit on me now.

“Life is short…and sugar is cheap!” – Jay Grelen, former “Sweet Tea” columnist for the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette

I think of this phrase on holidays like Thanksgiving and Christmas… when we have a family dinner, and I make big pitchers of sweet tea. There is so much wisdom in this phrase.  Life IS short…as many of us know all too well. We don’t stop to take stock of the blessings we have in our lives…or to truly appreciate the presence of those around us.  We look up, and half the people in the room have their noses buried in a smart phone…or they are glued to a television. Or perhaps we don’t even bother to get together at all.

I shared a poignant video* on Facebook last week of an elderly man who was sitting at a holiday table, dining alone.  His children all made excuses for why they couldn’t come for a Christmas visit this year…how maybe next time, they would make it.  Then the video cuts to a scene of the children receiving devastating news. By their reactions, you conclude that the “poppa” has died. The children are shown arriving outside this man’s home. They are distraught…it seems their beloved father/grandfather has died.  But when they enter the home, a holiday meal is on the table. Candles are lit, and everything is perfect…and the father/grandpa emerges from the kitchen, and asks, “How else could I have brought you all together?”

I don’t know your situation and circumstances today. My own family has spent holidays together – and apart - for various reasons.  We’ve postponed holiday get-togethers because someone was ill or hospitalized…and we’ve buried loved ones on Christmas Eve.  And yes, we’ve made our share of excuses why we couldn’t make it to one or more events when there was nothing catastrophic to prevent such a gathering. Sometimes, this couldn’t be helped…but other times, we just didn’t try hard enough.

The point is that we do this with God, too.  We often make excuses or postpone our time with Him.  At best, we give God limited attention and a lot of “lip service.”  Sometimes, He has to shake up our world just to bring us together with Him for some intimate time!  We forget that life is short…and sugar is cheap. It doesn’t cost us anything to spend time with God…and yet, that time is some of the most precious we will ever have.

So this Thanksgiving, thank God with everything in you. Set aside everything and spend quality time with God and let Him know just how grateful you are that He makes your life large with strength…that no matter the distance, He knows everything about you - and keeps you alive in the thick of turmoil and trouble.  Thank God that His love is eternal and everlasting.

While you’re at it…thank God for the people that He has placed in your life.  Reach out to some of them and spend some quality time in conversation, if not personal contact.  Soak in the moments spent together, and relish in them.  Life is short, and sugar is cheap…so maybe drink a glass of sweet tea while you’re at it!  Remember how blessed you are to be loved by such a great and mighty God…and make the most of each blessing that He has given you – this week, and always.

Psalm 100
Shout praises to the Lord,
    everyone on this earth.
Be joyful and sing
as you come in
    to worship the Lord!
You know the Lord is God!
He created us,
    and we belong to him;
    we are his people,
    the sheep in his pasture.
Be thankful and praise the Lord
    as you enter his temple.
The Lord is good!
    His love and faithfulness
    will last forever.

Thanksgiving Day is almost here!  Many Americans are frantically trying to get home to family and friends…or they are cooking night and day to prepare a feast that will be consumed within an hour or two - and result in leftovers for days on end!

Others are not so “fortunate.”  They are sitting in hospitals with loved ones who are gravely ill…or their loved ones are in heaven, and they have no one with whom to share a holiday meal.  They are homeless, hungry, out of work, lonely, despondent and generally hopeless.  And an expensive, overdone holiday to celebrate an “abundance” they don’t seem to enjoy seems not only pointless – but also painful.

We’ve all been there, to some degree.  We’ve all experienced highs and lows – both on holidays and on “regular” days.  But through it all, one thing has remained constant…the love and care of Jesus.  He loves us on our best days – and on our worst.  Jesus is with us when we have more than enough…and when we are wondering how we will get through the next few minutes.  And because of Jesus, we all have a reason to be thankful.

So look beyond your situation and circumstances this week. Look up…and stare into the eyes of Someone who loves you more than you can ever begin to imagine. Let His love surround you, and snuggle in closely as Jesus wraps you in His arms and pulls you toward His heart.  Know that you are one of His sheep…that He will never, ever stop loving you and caring about your every need.  And be thankful.

Even when you don’t feel like celebrating anything about your life, you can celebrate Jesus.  He is good…He is faithful…and His love will last forever! You can belong to Him forever and ever! If you have never fully surrendered your heart to Jesus, this is the time to do so…then bask in His never-ending love, grace and mercy.

Don’t wait another minute!  You belong to Jesus…now truly belong to Him! And make a joyful noise…this week – and always!

Romans 5:6-8
Christ arrives right on time to make this happen. He didn’t, and doesn’t, wait for us to get ready. He presented himself for this sacrificial death when we were far too weak and rebellious to do anything to get ourselves ready. And even if we hadn’t been so weak, we wouldn’t have known what to do anyway.

We can understand someone dying for a person worth dying for, and we can understand how someone good and noble could inspire us to selfless sacrifice. But God put his love on the line for us by offering his Son in sacrificial death while we were of no use whatever to him.

Scripture quotations from The Message. © 1993, 1994, 1995, 1996, 2000, 2001, 2002 by Eugene Peterson.  Used by permission of NavPress, Colorado Springs, CO.  All rights reserved.

We’ve all heard stories of a parent who jumped into the water to save a drowning child…and ended up drowning instead.  I know of a woman who was killed when she pushed her child out of the way of an oncoming truck.  While none of us can say for certain we would do in such a situation, I’m pretty sure I would risk my life for that of one of our children. And you probably would, also.

Conversely, you may have said of someone, “I would not walk across the street to spit on him if he was on fire!”  Now, whether you meant this or not…it was a harsh statement, to be certain.  But sometimes, the devil whispers in our ear and causes us to feel this way about people.  And sometimes, we play the “stranger card.”  We say, “I don’t know him/her…what happens is none of my business.”

Here’s the thing…it’s ALL the business of Jesus!  And aren’t we glad?!  Jesus gave His very life for us before we were even formed!  He sacrificed His blood on the cross for the child who is so precious to you and me…the stranger…and even that person we would not venture to save!  JESUS will save them, if only they will call on Him.

This kinda puts things in perspective, doesn’t it?  Jesus died for ALL of us…even those we find despicable!  He didn’t pick and choose based on race, creed, color, gender, sexual orientation, politics, socio-economics, or even attitudes and opinions!  In Matthew 11:28, Jesus says, “Are you tired? Worn out? Burned out on religion? Come to me. Get away with me and you’ll recover your life. I’ll show you how to take a real rest.”  He doesn’t specify WHO can come to Him…ALL are welcome!

As we approach Thanksgiving Day and reflect on our blessings, we must surely include Jesus among them.  We should all be grateful for how He welcomes each of us…and the incredible sacrifice that He made on our behalf.  There is nothing we can offer Jesus that is truly special…yet He died for us anyway.  We are all afforded equal opportunity to receive salvation in Him. We didn’t deserve it…we can’t earn it…but still, He laid down His life for each of us.

There might be someone, somewhere, who would be willing to lay down his/her life for you and me…and vice versa.  But only Jesus can say that He could do this for ANYONE and EVERYONE. Whether we accept Him as our Savior was not a deciding factor…He did it anyway.

Praise God for sending His precious Son – for His incredible, selfless gift.  My prayer is that you have embraced Jesus for yourself – that you have humbly and gratefully surrendered your heart to Him and asked that He forgive your sins – and fill your heart forever. ThisThanksgiving, can you count Jesus as your biggest blessing?  Isn’t it time you could?

Romans 13:11-14
But make sure that you don’t get so absorbed and exhausted in taking care of all your day-by-day obligations that you lose track of the time and doze off, oblivious to God. The night is about over, dawn is about to break. Be up and awake to what God is doing! God is putting the finishing touches on the salvation work he began when we first believed. We can’t afford to waste a minute, must not squander these precious daylight hours in frivolity and indulgence, in sleeping around and dissipation, in bickering and grabbing everything in sight. Get out of bed and get dressed! Don’t loiter and linger, waiting until the very last minute. Dress yourselves in Christ, and be up and about!

Scripture quotations from The Message. © 1993, 1994, 1995, 1996, 2000, 2001, 2002 by Eugene Peterson.  Used by permission of NavPress, Colorado Springs, CO.  All rights reserved.

I still remember the day when I got a phone call from my Mam-ma Polly, and she and her best friend, Ruby, had been involved in a car wreck.  It was probably 4:00 p.m., and I was dressed in some of the worst clothes I own…a ragged t-shirt and some very loose cropped knit pants.  These were my “house cleaning/workout” clothes.  I had on no makeup…I had not fixed my hair.  It was “one of those days” at my house, where I had gotten busy with other things and never bothered to really “dress.” And now, my grandmother was calling me…stranded on the other side of town and in immediate need of rescue.

I did what I had to do…I grabbed my purse, hopped into the car and headed to the scene of the accident.  I’ll shorten the story a bit by saying that Mam-ma refused treatment at the scene from the EMTs and assured everyone she was okay. Then she got in my car and said, “I can’t breathe…my chest is really hurting.”  We ended up in the hospital Emergency Room for several hours, where x-rays were made, tests were run, and the diagnosis was a badly bruised sternum.

People came and went, and I shrunk into the corner, greatly embarrassed by how terrible I must have looked. I’m sure that there were some who thought I must be the real accident victim!  And I should have learned my lesson from this day…but I have to admit that I have not.  I love nothing more than a day where I can spend much of it – if not all – in my pajamas!  It’s not that I am lazy…or that I am totally unproductive these days.  But I have to say, I am more productive on the days that I dress and get up and get going!  Just a few minutes of attention to getting dressed and “presentable” could mean a world of difference in how the entire day progresses.

So what’s the point?  Some of us get so caught up in the particulars of our life that we don’t take even a little bit of time each morning to “dress” with God…to spend a quiet minute or two asking Him to help us with our day.  We don’t “put on the full armor of God,” and we are often caught off guard in some manner later on.  We put on the old rags of “dressing” in things that do not honor God…gossip, dissension, overindulgence, self-serving activities, and sins of all kinds.  Instead of placing our focus on God and ways to serve Him with our whole hearts, we “lie around in our sweats” and leave room for the devil to take control!

So take a few minutes each day to seek God’s help in your preparation.  Whether you are packing lunches and dressing for school or work…or just grabbing a second cup of coffee to sit and read the newspaper in your pjs…ask God to equip you for the day.  Call on Him to meet your needs and those of your circle of friends and loved ones - and ask Him to show you how and where to serve.

Take inventory of the things that fill your life…your priorities, your friends and acquaintances, the activities that occupy your mind and your time.  Where have you failed to get dressed and get going?  Where do you need to make some adjustments?  Time is passing so quickly, and we truly don’t have a minute to waste. Will this be the day that you begin to “get up and get dressed” with God?  Don’t you think it should be?

Romans 13:1-7
Obey the rulers who have authority over you. Only God can give authority to anyone, and he puts these rulers in their places of power. People who oppose the authorities are opposing what God has done, and they will be punished. Rulers are a threat to evil people, not to good people. There is no need to be afraid of the authorities. Just do right, and they will praise you for it. After all, they are God’s servants, and it is their duty to help you.

If you do something wrong, you ought to be afraid, because these rulers have the right to punish you. They are God’s servants who punish criminals to show how angry God is. But you should obey the rulers because you know it is the right thing to do, and not just because of God’s anger.

You must also pay your taxes. The authorities are God’s servants, and it is their duty to take care of these matters. Pay all that you owe, whether it is taxes and fees or respect and honor.

Scripture taken from the Contemporary English Version © 1991,1992, 1995 by American Bible Society, Used by Permission.

I hope you will give me the courtesy of reading this entire message.  I did not want to write about this scripture passage.  It showed up in my outline, and frankly, I skipped it yesterday.  I read the words and said, “I hear You, LORD…but I just can’t do it.”  I understand that you may feel differently, and that is the beauty of a democratic republic…we are free to make our own choices.

I will tell you…this president-elect and the people he is tapping to assist him in leading our country scare me half to death!  It is my right to say this…although I will never resort to name calling or disrespectful words and actions.  Many did not afford President Obama respect and kindness. People who are supposed to be “Christian” friends…people I’ve known and loved all of my life…have called our current president every name in the book – and then some – and spoken terribly about him for the last eight years.  While I do not dare to judge, I feel that their words and actions have not been those of a person who would cause me want to follow Jesus, if this is how His disciples behave. But I do not believe that Jesus truly condones such behavior…and He must hang His head in disappointment quite often!

I’ve thought a lot about the election in the last two weeks…and I pondered these verses in Romans, as well.  I asked God NOT to make me write on them…and then I asked, “But why did you place them before me?”  Here’s what I feel that God is saying to me.  I believe this is a test of my faith. I feel that God is saying, “You know that I have told you to respect your government and its leaders.  I know that you are not comfortable with the incoming administration.  But do you trust Me?  Do you have enough faith to follow Me and do this hard thing…and believe that I will handle your worries and fears?”

There have been plenty of elected officials for whom I did not vote.  I have been disappointed more than once politically, and I bet you have, too.  I have always tried to be respectful and take the high road…even when others were not as kind in turn.  But I have to tell you, this one is really hard, because I have seen behavior and talk from this man and his “team” that I cannot help but believe troubles God terribly.  So I have to conclude that God is testing us…and when the day comes (and it will) when YOUR candidates are not elected, He will be watching to see if YOU listen to Him and show respect, obey the laws, pay your taxes, and behave as a good citizen.  I also am praying that the president-elect and his administration will take Paul’s words to the Romans to heart and take their roles as God’s servants (and ours) seriously.

Meanwhile…we have all got to figure out how to get along, regardless of who we support and/or endorse politically.  And I think this begins with all of us getting quiet and ceasing the hand-wringing for a while. I feel God calling for us to be still and listen for His voice…to allow Him room to work, and to trust His plans - even if we don’t see how they will possibly be good for any of us.

My mother had two sayings that are etched into my memory…”Two wrongs don’t make a right,” and “If you can’t say something nice, don’t say anything.”  Perhaps it’s time we brought these back and put them in to some heavy-duty practice, as we trust God to make a way where we cannot see one!  I’ll go first…will you join me?

Romans 13:8-10
Pay all your debts except the debt of love for others—never finish paying that! For if you love them, you will be obeying all of God’s laws, fulfilling all his requirements. If you love your neighbor as much as you love yourself you will not want to harm or cheat him, or kill him or steal from him. And you won’t sin with his wife or want what is his, or do anything else the Ten Commandments say is wrong. All ten are wrapped up in this one, to love your neighbor as you love yourself. Love does no wrong to anyone. That’s why it fully satisfies all of God’s requirements. It is the only law you need.

Fridays have become a busy time for me.  I spend the morning and at least part of the afternoon helping in Timothy and Zola’s classrooms at school.  It is no secret that I love children.  I love getting to know them…teaching them and watching as their minds expand with knowledge.  I love “loving” them and seeing their faces light up when they receive a smile or a hug.  I love encouraging a child and seeing the joy that he/she experiences when the “light bulb” goes on and things improve or a concept is fully understood. I love the purity and innocence with which children give and receive love.

Sometimes, children have to be corrected.  After all, we do have work to do and academic goals to achieve!  I have to remind students to stay on task.  I have to tell children that I cannot give them the answers to the test…that I will help them all I can, but I can’t do their work for them. I must remind the children to stay quiet in the hallways  - and stay in their seats and listen to the teacher in the classroom - even though they have a bazillion things they feel they simply must tell me immediately!  But these moments of correction are peppered with love and kindness.  I may speak firmly…but hopefully I am never harsh.  I may give a child an answer that he/she doesn’t want to hear…but I never want to make anyone feel ashamed.

I found a blog called Swords&Snoodles*, written by a woman in the United Kingdom named Becci Nicholls.  She shared a meme on Pinterest that said…” Don't become preoccupied with your child's academic ability. But instead, teach them to sit with those sitting alone. Teach them to be kind. Teach them to offer their help. Teach them to be a friend to the lonely. Teach them to encourage others. Teach them to think about other people. Teach them to share. Teach them to look for the good.  This is how they'll change the world.”

At the end of the day…love is what matters. This scripture passage is right…”Love your neighbor as yourself” is the only law we need.  This one commandment encompasses everything else.  Love does no intentional wrong to anyone…ever. A lot of us seem to have forgotten this.  Don’t you think it’s time we were reminded?

Are you looking for the good and operating in love - at all times toward all people?  Isn’t it time you were?

Romans 12:19-21
Dear friends, never avenge yourselves. Leave that to God, for he has said that he will repay those who deserve it. Don’t take the law into your own hands. Instead, feed your enemy if he is hungry. If he is thirsty give him something to drink and you will be “heaping coals of fire on his head.” In other words, he will feel ashamed of himself for what he has done to you. Don’t let evil get the upper hand, but conquer evil by doing good.

I’ve shared this story before, but when my siblings and I were little, my mother was nursing this pitiful magnolia tree sprout in our yard.  It must have been about 2½ feet tall and was almost laughable as a “tree.”  One day, the neighborhood kids and I were playing a little game of “Jack Jump Over the Candlestick” and hurdling this “tree.”  Let’s just say that my attempt was less than successful…and the top of the tree snapped off.

I knew I was in terrible trouble, so I did what any quick-thinking seven-or-eight-year-old would do…I blamed my little brother.  I can still see my mother – absolutely furious over this broken tree – switching my brother all the way into the house.  I can hear him crying.  I can feel the mixture of angst that he was being punished – and relief that I was not.  And this incident haunts me even today.

My brother did not retaliate toward me.  And years later when I begged his forgiveness once again, he laughed and assured me that there were no hard feelings.  Still, I cannot tell you how ashamed I am of that incident – and others, I’m sure, where I blamed him to save my own hide.

To be sure, we did our share of fighting as siblings.  I still remember the day that my brother hit me in the front yard, and my dad stood in the doorway and said, “Hit him back!”  I burst into tears, looked at my brother, and said, “I can’t!”

Today, the magnolia tree towers several stories high into the sky in the corner of my mother’s front yard. I have to say, I have a love-hate relationship with that tree!  It reminds me of a time when I behaved badly, and my brother graciously did not seek revenge.  The other incident reminds me that I had an opportunity to seek retribution for an offense…and I could not bring myself to do it.  Whatever the reason, I am truly grateful.  I don’t have to live with the guilt and shame of that day!

A lot of us are fighting battles that are not ours.  We are trying to “make them pay” (whoever “them” is) for something that offended or upset us.  Or maybe we are on the other end…we have said or done something we shouldn’t…and we’re pretty well waiting for “the shoe to fall” as we receive retribution. Here’s the thing…we need to let go and allow God to work…because He can, and He will – and in a far better manner than we ever imagined.

God is calling us to “go high”…to treat others as we wish to be treated and to offer others the love, grace, mercy, forgiveness, kindness and compassion that He gives to us every minute of the day.  We are called to feed the “hungry and thirsty”…to “heap coals of kindness” upon the heads of those who have mistreated us.  Maybe they will feel shame and remorse…and maybe not.  Either way, it won’t matter, because our response will please God…and He will make the difference – for us AND the other guy. Are you ready to let Him?

Romans 12:17-18
Never pay back evil for evil. Do things in such a way that everyone can see you are honest clear through. Don’t quarrel with anyone. Be at peace with everyone, just as much as possible.

The Living Bible copyright © 1971 by Tyndale House Foundation. Used by permission of Tyndale House Publishers Inc., Carol Stream, Illinois 60188. All rights reserved.

Without going into details that might be hurtful to some, I will tell you that I have seen the results of paybacks…and they were not pretty.  Some furthered the hurt and anger…while others were, quite literally, lethal.  Retaliation and revenge do not serve us well.

I will be the first to admit that there are times when I have a hard time holding my tongue…and times when I truly am unsuccessful. I have “set a few people straight”…or tried.  Did it help?  I don’t know.  Sometimes, I think it just widened the divide between us.  In some cases, that might not seem like a big deal.  Who cares of you never speak to that acquaintance again or not?  So what if you go separate ways?

It is one thing to distance yourself from evil…to put space between you and people who cause you angst or disrupt your life.  But when we continue to churn internally over this…or to harbor ill feelings in our heart, this goes against everything Jesus has taught us.

I had an unsettling experience a few years ago with some people who were supposed to be Christian disciples. Ugly things were said that I felt did not represent the love of Christ for all of His people. Sadly, things got pretty heated.  I have had a hard time forgiving some of those involved in this situation. However, I realized that if I wanted to be like Jesus, I had to try to forgive and treat them as I wished to be treated. So, when I see one of the people involved, I smile and speak to them. More than once, the person has adopted the “duck and run” response.

This is okay…I’ve done my part.  Perhaps they feel guilty over how they behaved…or ashamed to receive grace and mercy after acting so unkindly. The best part for me is the peace that I feel because of MY reaction and response.  I know that God does not sanction holding grudges…and I try to let go of these as quickly as possible.

There is so much discourse in our country right now. People on both sides of many issues want to make “the other side” pay…to inflict pain and retribution…to prove that this one or that is right – and the others are wrong.  Please take time to prayerfully consider this message from Romans 12 today.  Be at peace with everyone, as much as possible.  Smile and walk away with confidence that you operated as Jesus commands…and offered His grace and mercy – even when you didn’t feel like doing so!

Let others see you as someone who operates in the love of Jesus Christ…not a person who says one thing and does another. Treat others as you wish to be treated…even those who appear to operate in evil talk and action.  Live in a way that brings no regrets or shame.  Learn to make a difference rather than a point.  Let go…and let God have control!  These are often difficult results to achieve…but we CAN do this! This is my goal…is it yours?

Romans 1:16-17
For I am not ashamed of this Good News about Christ. It is God’s powerful method of bringing all who believe it to heaven. This message was preached first to the Jews alone, but now everyone is invited to come to God in this same way. This Good News tells us that God makes us ready for heaven—makes us right in God’s sight—when we put our faith and trust in Christ to save us. This is accomplished from start to finish by faith. As the Scripture says it, “The man who finds life will find it through trusting God.”

The Living Bible copyright © 1971 by Tyndale House Foundation. Used by permission of Tyndale House Publishers Inc., Carol Stream, Illinois 60188. All rights reserved.

I’ve been having some serious conversations with God lately…peppered with several questions…”How? Why? When? Will we? Can we? What if?”  We all want to believe that everything will be okay…in a myriad of circumstances and situations.  But the head and heart often have a major disconnect.

For more than a few of us, there are people in our lives who have questions, also – especially children. As Christian disciples, it is somewhat our job to reassure them.  Just as God promises us that He has the power – and desire – to meet our every need (perfectly!)…we must assure those we encounter of this claim.  In order to make a good “sell,” we have to believe it for ourselves!

Read the last sentence of our scripture passage again…”The man who finds life will find it through trusting God.”  Don’t you want this?  Don’t you want to live in confidence and peace, rather than fear and an unsettled spirit?   I know I do…and I am working hard to fortify my trust in God.  I am studying His word…praying…and seeking encouragement in the everyday blessings He bestows upon me.

I am not ashamed of the Good News about Christ…and I am determined to build my faith and trust as God makes me ready for heaven – and demonstrate this to others.  What about you?

Romans 1:8-12
First, I thank God in the name of Jesus Christ for all of you. I do this because people everywhere in the world are talking about your faith. God has seen how I never stop praying for you, while I serve him with all my heart and tell the good news about his Son.

In all my prayers, I ask God to make it possible for me to visit you. I want to see you and share with you the same blessings that God’s Spirit has given me. Then you will grow stronger in your faith. What I am saying is that we can encourage each other by the faith that is ours.

Scripture taken from the Contemporary English Version © 1991,1992, 1995 by American Bible Society, Used by Permission.

In the last 24 hours, I have referenced faith THREE TIMES in correspondence with friends who are concerned about the future.  I’ve prayed for loved ones and acquaintances that are in some difficult situations…and I’ve asked God to work as only He can.

The Apostle Paul speaks in this passage of wishing he could meet some of his loved ones and friends in person, so that they could encourage one another in the LORD face to face.  I know that when I am encouraging Timothy, Zola and Nathan, they sometimes need a hug and a smile to go with my words of hope.  And we adults are no different!

But let’s be real…we can’t be everywhere at once.  So we have the next best thing…correspondence!  We have letters, cards, e-mail messages, texts, FaceTime, Skype…and the telephone!  And we ALWAYS have prayer.  We really have no excuse for failing to encourage one another and sharing our faith in God to see us through every situation and circumstance.  If the Apostle Paul could do this so effectively from his jail cell…surely WE can do this from the comfort of our own home/school/workplace - or wherever we happen to find ourselves!

So here’s my message to you today…keep the faith!  We say we believe in God and trust Him to do all things…now is the time to demonstrate this!  Encourage your friends and neighbors.  If you are with them in person, smile and offer them a hug when they need it.  If you are using modern technology to correspond, include a hopeful emoji where appropriate.  Write a note…send a card…pick up the phone…PRAY!

Fill your heart and mind with the hope and faith that God is still in control – of EVERYTHING – and let others truly see this at work in you.  And let’s all get started today!

Revelation 1:8
“I am the A and the Z, the Beginning and the Ending of all things,” says God, who is the Lord, the All Powerful One who is, and was, and is coming again!

The Living Bible copyright © 1971 by Tyndale House Foundation. Used by permission of Tyndale House Publishers Inc., Carol Stream, Illinois 60188. All rights reserved.

This morning, the 2nd/3rd graders and I studied the question, “What Is the Truth About the Devil?” in our Sunday school class.  We learned some interesting things about Satan…how he was once one of God’s most special angels…how he lives on earth – among us, and not in hell (that will come later).  We discovered that our mental images of how the devil looks are not anywhere close to what he really looks like…and how he can never defeat God.

We learned that the devil likes to take on many forms to try and trip us up.  He could be sitting right beside us, and we might not recognize him. So we practiced turning our backs, facing God, and whispering the name “Jesus”…because even when we whisper Jesus’ name, the devil shrinks and flees.  It absolutely drives him mad for us to call on Jesus.

Finally, we practiced saying one perfect phrase…”God wins.”  I encouraged the children to stay close to God and remember this…that God IS the beginning and the ending of all things…that the devil can never become powerful enough to defeat Him.  I reminded them that we can carry Jesus and His Holy Spirit in our hearts on this earth – and spend all of Eternity with Him in heaven.  But the devil will NEVER reside there…he is destined for

This lesson is one that should not only be studied by 2nd/3rd graders.  We adults sometimes need to be reminded that the devil is real…and powerful…and vying night and day for our attention and allegiance.  But GOD is the ALL POWERFUL ONE who is, and was, and is coming again! When our focus is steadfast on HIM, the devil doesn’t stand a chance!

GOD WINS!  Hallelujah!  Cling to this thought…celebrate it…and serve the One who is truly the Beginning and Ending of all things.

Revelation 1:1-7
This is what God showed to Jesus Christ, so that he could tell his servants what must happen soon. Christ then sent his angel with the message to his servant John. And John told everything that he had seen about God’s message and about what Jesus Christ had said and done.

God will bless everyone who reads this prophecy to others, and he will bless everyone who hears and obeys it. The time is almost here.

From John to the seven churches in Asia.

I pray that you will be blessed with kindness and peace from God, who is and was and is coming. May you receive kindness and peace from the seven spirits before the throne of God. May kindness and peace be yours from Jesus Christ, the faithful witness. Jesus was the first to conquer death, and he is the ruler of all earthly kings. Christ loves us, and by his blood he set us free from our sins. He lets us rule as kings and serve God his Father as priests. To him be glory and power forever and ever! Amen. Look! He is coming with the clouds. Everyone will see him, even the ones who stuck a sword through him. All people on earth will weep because of him. Yes, it will happen! Amen.

Scripture taken from the Contemporary English Version © 1991,1992, 1995 by American Bible Society, Used by Permission.

Let me begin by saying that I respect the Book of Revelation, but I am by no means an “End Times” scholar.  Frankly, I am not worried about what will happen when Jesus returns, because I know where I am headed!  At the same time, I read these words today and considered them in light of what is happening in our world.  I also read the entries in Jesus Calling* for November 11th and 12th, and a very clear message emerged…one of hope and promise - and kindness!

In the November 11th entry, I read that Jesus knows what our days will contain – both difficulties and blessings – and He empowers us according to how willing we are to rely on Him for help AND how difficult the circumstances may be.  We are encouraged to look at challenges as “opportunities to receive more of My Power than usual.”  We are to receive His kindness and peace…and share this with others.

In today’s entry, the speaker talks of how we have trudged through weeks (and maybe months) of challenges and difficulties…and now, we are enjoying a season of abundance and blessings.  Maybe you don’t feel like you are “there” yet!  But as I look at my own life over the last several months, I see how a lot of what I have experienced was akin to trudging through a deep, dark forest with heavy underbrush…and now I am somewhat emerging into the openness of “lush meadows drenched in warm sunshine.”

I feel Jesus with me.  I know that He has my best interests at heart.  This entry says that we often fail to receive all that Jesus wants to give us because we decide that we are unworthy.  Let me assure you, NONE OF US are worthy!  We did nothing…we can do nothing…to deserve Jesus and all that He has sacrificed for us. There is no logical reason for Him to return for us…much less prepare a place for us with Him for all Eternity.  These are GIFTS…and when we don’t readily accept and receive them, He is insulted – and heartbroken.

So I will take the gifts that Jesus is offering.  I will gratefully thank Him for bringing me through dark times and bathing me in His light and blessings.  I will share His kindness and peace with others and encourage them along the way.  I look forward to the day when I can sit at Jesus’ feet all the time and bask in His glory – forever and ever.  I am not afraid…of anything, past, present or future.  I am empowered by the Savior of the World…and He will never desert me.

Emboldened by the power of Jesus Christ, I look at the challenges and difficulties of this world and say…“Bring it on!”  Are you with me?

Proverbs 15:1
A kind answer
    soothes angry feelings,
    but harsh words
    stir them up.

I have all but given up Facebook in the last few days, so if I have not “liked” something you posted – or commented – I am not trying to be a snob.  I am just tired of the ugliness and have decided I don’t need that poison infiltrating my heart and mind.  I’ve seen a meme circulating lately that says “Be kind…for everyone you meet is fighting a battle you know nothing about.”  I also saw one that said, “LISTEN and SILENT are spelled with the same letters…think about it!”  And then there is this quote from Mark Twain…”Kindness is a language that the deaf can hear and the blind can see.”

This week, a lot of unkindness and “harsh words” are circulating.  I’ve read some truly ugly comments that have been hurled at people who are disappointed about the election outcome, which pretty well sparked my decision to say “No!”to much participation in Facebook.  People who are genuinely grieving and/or frightened about losing such things as health care benefits - or even their home in this country – are being belittled and called all sorts of names, including “sore losers” (which is actually one of the nicer ones).  Some have said that it’s the “everybody gets a trophy syndrome.”  These judgments are unkind - and unfair.  There is beauty in losing graciously…but the same can be said for winning, as well.

Why don’t we all take off the gloves and focus on kindness for a change.  Why not look at those you meet and remember that they are fighting a battle of which you know nothing.  Why not recognize that we all have feelings…and the other person’s are just as real – and just as significant – as yours or mine.  We have all been on the losing end of something.  We’ve all had times when we were worried or concerned…and feeling unheard – or worse yet, put down – just makes it all that much worse.  And we haven’t even talked about how this grieves God.  When His children inflict pain on one another, He is NOT pleased!

Let’s take a collective breath.  Let’s look at “the other guy” with the eyes of Jesus and recognize that he/she has genuine feelings…joys, fears, victories, defeats, moments of elation and times of tremendous sorrow…and let’s be kind - and maybe even silent. In many cases, we are trying to fight a battle that really isn’t ours to engage.

So let’s let go...and let God handle things for a while.  I’m pretty sure He’ll do a far better job, anyway.

Philippians 2:1-4
If you’ve gotten anything at all out of following Christ, if his love has made any difference in your life, if being in a community of the Spirit means anything to you, if you have a heart, if you care— then do me a favor: Agree with each other, love each other, be deep-spirited friends. Don’t push your way to the front; don’t sweet-talk your way to the top. Put yourself aside, and help others get ahead. Don’t be obsessed with getting your own advantage. Forget yourselves long enough to lend a helping hand.

Scripture quotations from The Message. © 1993, 1994, 1995, 1996, 2000, 2001, 2002 by Eugene Peterson.  Used by permission of NavPress, Colorado Springs, CO.  All rights reserved.

Yesterday, I got a shipment of greeting cards in the mail.  Greg was watching me sort through them, and I noted that “I seem to send a lot of sympathy cards these days.”  Indeed, we are in a season where a lot of our friends and family members are leaving for heaven…parents and grandparents of our friends…contemporaries of our own parents…and yes, even friends close to our age.

Sending cards is my “thing.”  I got it from my mother…and as I sift through boxes of old mementos, I see that it was also a big deal with my grandmothers.  Hand-written notes are quickly becoming a lost art.  Everything seems to be done by e-mail and text these days. But I have a couple of boxes full of notes and cards I have saved over the years that have special meaning.  Occasionally, I will read through them…and I am always encouraged and blessed by what I find there.

My thoughts on greeting cards and the people who send them made me think of the people who have had a strong, positive influence on my life.  I recalled several who have always been there to pull me up by the bootstraps when I needed it…and stand me upright when I began to sink and fall in discouragement.  I thought of people who helped me through some really dark times…women AND men who were there to give me just the right word when I was concerned about an issue…or deeply sad over circumstances beyond my control.

I thought of people who have truly cared…who put their own agendas and calendars aside to be with me when I needed them…who lent a helping hand, and then some…who had a heart for me and my loved ones – and more importantly, for Jesus.  THESE are my role models…these "Philippians 2:1-4 Christians" who forget themselves, remember Jesus – and reach out to others in His name.

Jesus’ love HAS made a difference in my life…and being a member of the community of the Spirit IS important to me. I want to be like Jesus and those who have modeled His love, grace, compassion, forgiveness, mercy and kindness in my life and those of others around me.  I want to be known as someone who has a heart and truly cares about ALL of God’s children. I want to be a deep-spirited friend to others.

I am asking God to equip me for this mission, as He has done for so many who have influenced my life.  Will this be your prayer, as well?  Are you willing to give up any selfish desires and attitudes…to operate in humility and forego the instinct to first ask, “What’s in this for me?”  Are you ready to go “all in” for Jesus and be His hands and feet to each and every person you meet?  Don’t you think it’s time you were?

Matthew 8:5-10
When Jesus arrived in Capernaum, a Roman army captain came and pled with him to come to his home and heal his servant boy who was in bed paralyzed and racked with pain.

“Yes,” Jesus said, “I will come and heal him.”

Then the officer said, “Sir, I am not worthy to have you in my home; and it isn’t necessary for you to come. If you will only stand here and say, ‘Be healed,’ my servant will get well! I know, because I am under the authority of my superior officers and I have authority over my soldiers, and I say to one, ‘Go,’ and he goes, and to another, ‘Come,’ and he comes, and to my slave boy, ‘Do this or that,’ and he does it. And I know you have authority to tell his sickness to go—and it will go!”

Jesus stood there amazed! Turning to the crowd he said, “I haven’t seen faith like this in all the land of Israel!

I was so anxious – almost excited – to see what God would have to say to me today in His Holy Word.  I knew it would be profound…comforting…encouraging…healing.  And I am not disappointed.  Clearly, God is using this passage to show me that He is still in control…still ready, willing, and able to meet our needs.  All we have to do is trust Him.

Wherever I am, I can simply whisper, “LORD, I need You…” and He will be there.  Whatever is on my heart…I can share…and Jesus hears me.  Whenever I am defeated, He lifts me up…and when I am joyful and victorious, He celebrates with me.  I know with all my heart that when I ask Jesus to come to me – or heal me – He is already one step ahead of me.

So today…in ALL things…I am whispering, “LORD…I need You.”  And I know that He hears me…and will answer.

Matthew 7:12
Treat others as you want them to treat you. This is what the Law and the Prophets are all about.

Well, here we are!  For months, we have said we were anxious for Election Day to arrive…and now it’s upon us!  People have been saying, “I’m so ready for this to be over.”  And that’s a reasonable statement.  But let’s be honest…for a lot of Americans, this day will not bring the results they desired or anticipated.  Even those who are happy about the election of one candidate or another are sure to have disappointments in the outcomes of other races.

It’s a pretty safe assumption that there are people serving in office today who did not receive your vote - or mine.  Yet somehow, the world continues to spin on its axis. This was my eleventh presidential election in which to vote.  Like all of us, I’ve seen my candidates win…and lose.  I’ve been disappointed, worried about our country – and the world at large - and downright mad at times.  But I have never resorted to disrespect or name calling.

As a teacher, aunt, and friend to dozens of young children, I have never spoken disdainfully to them about another candidate.  I’ve never criticized the adults who voted for the opposition…or told a child that his/her parents and adult relatives were wrong for supporting a certain candidate. I may have explained why I supported the people who got my vote…but I have never attacked the choices of another.

When my candidates have lost, I’ve done my best to be kind and respectful of those who were elected.  I might not sing their praises, but I don’t belittle them or treat them unkindly – even with words. I have been greatly dismayed by the judgment of others…and I’ve mentally questioned their thinking in supporting certain candidates.  But I still love them. I will still be kind to them when we meet…I will still smile and treat them with respect.  I will honor their right and privilege to support whoever they choose…and I will hope that they afford me the same respect.

In the words of First Lady, Michelle Obama, God is calling us to “go high.”  Jesus has commanded us to treat others as we wish to be treated…and that includes those who did not get our vote.  So tomorrow, when the ballots have been tallied, I will hold my head high and move ahead with my efforts to serve God to the best of my ability…even if that means keeping my mouth shut about people I did not elect!  This election IS important…but honoring God and serving Him in faithful obedience is so much more critical.

When you wake up tomorrow, how will you behave?  Who will you serve and honor?  Will your words and actions show others a faith-filled disciple of Christ…or a sore loser who doesn’t really demonstrate that “with God, ALL things are possible?”  Take some time today to prayerfully seek God’s strength and resolve. Let Him fill you with His power and confidence – even when you are feeling defeated.  Always “go high” with God and show others His amazing grace and mercy.  Pull the lever, then walk away with confidence that God in still in control - today and always - and let others always see this in your daily living.

Matthew 6:27-34
“Has anyone by fussing in front of the mirror ever gotten taller by so much as an inch? All this time and money wasted on fashion—do you think it makes that much difference? Instead of looking at the fashions, walk out into the fields and look at the wildflowers. They never primp or shop, but have you ever seen color and design quite like it? The ten best-dressed men and women in the country look shabby alongside them.

“If God gives such attention to the appearance of wildflowers—most of which are never even seen—don’t you think he’ll attend to you, take pride in you, do his best for you? What I’m trying to do here is to get you to relax, to not be so preoccupied with getting, so you can respond to God’s giving. People who don’t know God and the way he works fuss over these things, but you know both God and how he works. Steep your life in God-reality, God-initiative, God-provisions. Don’t worry about missing out. You’ll find all your everyday human concerns will be met.

“Give your entire attention to what God is doing right now, and don’t get worked up about what may or may not happen tomorrow. God will help you deal with whatever hard things come up when the time comes.

For most of my life, I’ve kept “to-do” lists.  These range from lists of things I hope to accomplish each day to long-term goals…like “scan and organize all of our photos,” and maybe “write another book.”  I have “mental lists” of things I need to get done…people I owe a visit…books I would like to read, and more.  I used to really beat myself up when things did not get marked off the “short list” as planned.  I would get so frustrated and upset with myself when I got behind and projects stacked up undone. And I will admit, sometimes I still get a little bent out of shape when I see things that need to be accomplished…and I am not getting to them in a timely fashion.

But then I look at what IS getting done…a family who is nurtured…friends and loved ones who are encouraged…little things that fill my days and don’t seem to amount to much – but add up to a whole lot of “something!”  I see that God is giving me opportunities every day to live – not just muddle through the day.  I bought “vampire teeth” for the kids for Halloween with every intention of making this cute donut “face” that I saw on Pinterest.  But I got busy with helping in the classroom and attending the kids’ parties at school.  So they got a set of the teeth and no donut - and they could not have cared less!

I won’t say that I am “settling”…because I think as I become less uptight about whether the house is spotless and things are “just so,” I experience more of God’s abundance in many ways.  I know that life is short, and our chances to spend time with one another and truly live in the moment – and bask in God’s goodness – are fleeting.  We will blink, and our babies will be grown…we will be “over the hill!”…and a whole other generation will have left for heaven!  What will we have to show for our lives?  Will we have spent them worrying about tomorrow and all of the things on our lists?  Or will we have steeped ourselves in the things of God…His desires for how we fill our days…and the blessings that He has poured out on each of us?  You know what the right answers to these questions are…so what will you do about them?

Ask God to help you revamp your priorities.  Give HIM first place on your “to-do” list and let Him order the rest of the items.  Recognize God’s presence in even the little things of the day…and learn to truly appreciate all of His blessings.  Stop worrying so much…and start living a whole lot more!  I know I’m working on all of these things…what about you?

Matthew 6:24-27
“You cannot serve two masters: God and money. For you will hate one and love the other, or else the other way around.

“So my counsel is: Don’t worry about things—food, drink, and clothes. For you already have life and a body—and they are far more important than what to eat and wear. Look at the birds! They don’t worry about what to eat—they don’t need to sow or reap or store up food—for your heavenly Father feeds them. And you are far more valuable to him than they are. Will all your worries add a single moment to your life?"

Timmy and Nathan LOVE Legos®.  Zola can take ‘em or leave ‘em…but she will occasionally play with them, too.  If you have priced Lego® sets, you know they are not cheap! A simple “erector set” that creates a figure only a few inches square can cost almost $20.  And as the saying goes among adults with kids…”You can never have too many Legos®!”  So we have searched for ways to add to our collection without breaking the bank.  We will occasionally buy a brand-new set…but we “shop around” for the best deal and lowest price whenever possible.

Lately, I discovered several eBay sellers who offer Legos® by the pound…cleaned, sanitized used pieces that can spark the imagination of any junior creator and offer hours of fun.  For $20, I can get up to two pounds of these pieces and mini figures…literally thousands of new Legos®! I divide these up into plastic bags…and once in a while, I will surprise the boys (or reward good behavior) with a new assortment!

Today, Zola went to church with friends, so we just had Timmy and Nathan with us. When we got home from church, I gave each boy a bag of “new” Legos® to open while I prepared lunch.  You should have seen them!  They were beyond excited.  It was like Christmas Day.  They squealed with excitement as they discovered crystals, swords and other neat accessories…along with a couple of new, cool “mini-figs.”  They created characters and counted their “loot” and showed their Uncle Greg the neat things they were making.  They could not have cared less that these were not “boxed sets.”  They did not even ask whether these were new pieces or not.  They used their imagination rather than a booklet of instructions, and they had a great time!

When the children come to our house, they never worry that there won’t be food, toys, and plenty of fun and love. Occasionally they will see a commercial for some toy that they tell us they simply MUST have…but it’s rare.  They are generally worry-free…and life is great!  Do you remember those carefree days?

Sometimes, I think we need to return to the simplicity of our childhood.  I know we can’t really do this - that we have jobs to do…bills to pay…people counting on us for all sorts of things.  But we DO still have a Heavenly Father who is ready, willing and able to meet many of the needs that we waste time worrying about on a regular basis.

Lately, I’ve done my fair share of “working” my prayers…and turning them over and over in my mind.  This is completely ridiculous, and I know it.  But sometimes, we can’t seem to let go and trust God…and the devil absolutely DANCES when we do this!  I can almost feel God’s disappointment, as He politely stands in the corner and wonders why on earth I won’t trust Him.  I’m here to tell you, I am so ready to do this!!!

Stop and ask yourself what worries you these days.  Then consider if this is really how God wants you to expend your energy.  Isn’t it time you stopped worrying about so many things that are not really ours to handle…and let God have complete control?  Isn’t it time we got serious about operating in Christian faith?  We CAN be a carefree kid again in so many ways…God’s kid!  Will this be the day that we begin?

Matthew 6:22-23
“Your eyes are windows into your body. If you open your eyes wide in wonder and belief, your body fills up with light. If you live squinty-eyed in greed and distrust, your body is a dank cellar. If you pull the blinds on your windows, what a dark life you will have!

Scripture quotations from The Message. © 1993, 1994, 1995, 1996, 2000, 2001, 2002 by Eugene Peterson.  Used by permission of NavPress, Colorado Springs, CO.  All rights reserved.

This morning, I awoke in darkness, even though the sun had been up for more than an hour.  We have room darkening drapery and blinds on one side of our bedroom…and a dark, windowless hallway just outside the other.  So even on the sunniest day, there is darkness until the door is opened to the rest of our house…which is virtually walled in windows.  Then the light comes flooding in and fills ups every nook and cranny!

When I was a young teenager, I loved to keep the curtains drawn tightly for much of the morning in summer.  It was as if as long as the light and the “outside world” were not visible, we didn’t have to start our day.  We could laze in pajamas, drain the last cups of coffee from my dad’s percolator, and pretend that we didn’t have anything we had to do all day.  My mother was attending college classes at a university some 40 miles away and didn’t return home until after noon, so we would piddle around until about an hour before she arrived, then scramble like “Samantha” on the TV sitcom “Bewitched” to get the kitchen cleaned, beds made, and all of our other chores done…and yes, open the curtains!

We like the darkness when we are trying to sleep or be lazy for a day. But too many of us choose to stay in the dark much of the time. We either try to shut out the outside world…or we squint to see things as we wish them to be, rather than review them in the bright light of truth.  It seems to me that lately there has been a lot of “squinting” and “curtain pulling” in our country, as people try to put their own “spin” on how things are…or how they want them to be.

The time has come to open the blinds…and open our eyes.  We need to trust God to handle everything that is happening to us…to seek His will and believe that He truly knows best…and we need to demonstrate this to others.  No more hand wringing…no more “trash talk” and berating of one another…no more picking and choosing what to believe or support based on our own agendas and desires – or because it just “feels good.”  The time has come to fill our bodies with the Light of Christ…and act like it!

I will be the first to admit that I have had my moments where the issue wasn’t that I didn’t trust God…but I got caught up in the negativity and “gloom and doom” despair that seems to be a pervading attitude among many.  My sweet husband reminded me this morning that we are “glass half full” people.  God gave him words of encouragement and logic to speak to me that were a reminder of WHO is in charge…and how blessed we are because of Jesus.

So I am challenging each of us to get out from under the covers, pull back the curtains, and open our eyes to the bright light of Jesus Christ.  Let’s trust Him to do what only He can and embrace the wonderful, amazing, abundant life that He offers each of us.  And let’s begin today!

Matthew 6:19-21
“Don’t store up treasures here on earth where they can erode away or may be stolen. Store them in heaven where they will never lose their value and are safe from thieves. If your profits are in heaven, your heart will be there too."

The Living Bible copyright © 1971 by Tyndale House Foundation. Used by permission of Tyndale House Publishers Inc., Carol Stream, Illinois 60188. All rights reserved.

Since 1990, I have been directly involved in sorting through the personal belongings of others at least five times - and I’m here to tell you…it’s just STUFF!  I’ve commiserated with friends who are having a similar experience, and I’ve shared MY perspective on issues related to inheritances and “estates.” In the end, I’ve asked more than one person, “Why is this so important?  You have been fine all of these years without an inheritance or these ‘treasures,’ so why wouldn’t you continue to be okay if you’re left out of the will?”

I have sorted through a lot of my mother’s things in the last 10 months…and we still have a long way to go!  But I have become even more cognizant of how important it is to de-clutter my life and re-align my priorities. First, I do not want to burden others with having to dispose of an excess of my “stuff,” and secondly, I don’t want anyone to think that these things define me in any way.  When I am gone, I don’t want people to say, “She surely had pretty things.” I want them to say, “She was always busy serving Jesus and others…she gave Him her all.”

I have also begun to give away things that are important to me…to people that I want to “inherit” them.  I would far rather be able to explain to that person WHY it is important to me to hand down an item - what the “treasure” means on a personal level.  Besides, I would like to be able to see someone else enjoy something that had special meaning to me – and now to him/her.  If I wait until I’m gone, I’ll never really know what happened to these items.

I will tell you that I have a long way to go.  I still have far too much “stuff”…and some of it I value more than I should.  I look at all of the things that were so important to those who have left for heaven…and I remind myself that they could care less today about any of it.  The real treasure is waiting for us there!  It is accrued by how we serve in Jesus’ name.

We cannot earn our salvation, but I am convinced that when we build a legacy of loving others…treating them with kindness…going out of our way to do whatever we can to be the hands and feet of Jesus for others…and serving God at every turn, our Heavenly Father takes notice. I believe there is a direct correlation between humble, genuine Christian discipleship – emulating Jesus and demonstrating His teachings – and the bounty that awaits us in Heaven. We can’t take this “stuff” with us…but we can stockpile God’s blessings and favor for Eternity.  Now which would you really rather have?
