Here we are again… at the end of another year! No doubt, we have all encountered our own share of joys, triumphs, challenges and tribulations. Surely no one can live 365 consecutive uneventful days! There will be highs and lows for each of us. But the one thing that is indisputable is the availability of God’s spirit… His strength and power readily offered to each of us.
So often, we say, “This is so hard! I don’t know how I will make it!” We worry, fret, and operate in fear. The Apostle Paul’s words for Timothy work equally well for us. God has His hand on us…He is equipping us with fortitude and courage. With God by our side - His Holy Spirit living within us - nothing is beyond what we can handle. Because of His spirit of power, love and self-discipline, we are able to endure hardships, embrace victories… and keep a level head through all of it!
As we start a new year, I encourage you to make sure you are equipped for what lies ahead. Don’t enter 2013 without the power and strength of God to undergird you. Take some time right now to pause and ask Him to be with you every step of the way. In the words of scripture, put on the full armor of God, so that each minute of the day is as full and rich as possible.
There’s one more thing… remember to be grateful. Thank God for all He does for you… the blessings, care, power and encouragement He provides. Thank Him for giving us Jesus… and for sending His Holy Spirit to be your constant companion. And also thank God for the other people who come in and out of your life… for brief encounters and lasting relationships… for opportunities to bless and serve… and for those who enrich your life in His name.
Make this year the one you truly live with purpose. Realize your full potential with God as the driving force within you. Operate humbly under His power, and remember to be grateful in all circumstances. I’ve said it before, but it bears repeating… with God’s power behind us, we are stronger than we think! Make 2013 the year you fully embrace this thought… and live by example. Happy New Year’s Eve… and God bless you!

If you are like most people, you have spent at least a few minutes thinking about the coming year… and what you will do with it. Many vow to get organized, lose weight and get in shape, take up a new hobby, or mark a few things off their “bucket list.” Probably very few of us vowed to do more to serve others in Jesus’ name… but this might be the most important resolution we could ever make.
It’s easy to get sidetracked… to become self-absorbed. After all, many of us have all we can handle just to keep our own heads above water… challenges like study, work, family, and paying the bills. Some of us have major health issues or physical challenges, while others struggle to meet the needs of family members and continue to keep their own lives in check. Let’s face it… most of us are already plenty busy!
But you notice that Jesus doesn’t ask us, “Do you have a minute?” He doesn’t say, “Can you pencil me in on the third week of the fourth month for an hour?” He says, “If you love me, feed my sheep.” In other words, if you love Jesus and truly want to be His disciple (and not just claim to be), you have to do whatever needs to be done. This means keeping your eyes and ears open and staying attuned to the needs of others. You can’t wait for someone to call you and say, “Jim needs a ride to class” – you have to notice that Jim is walking a lot and doesn’t appear to have transportation, then ask him, “Can I give you a ride?”
You have to start looking around and asking yourself, “Who have I not seen at church in a few weeks? Is everything okay?” and then call and ask. You have to send a note of encouragement, pick up the phone and check on someone who is sick – or the caregiver who is sitting with him/her, or drop off a casserole for someone you know is struggling to put food on the table. You have to offer to keep small children some afternoon so a frazzled mom can grocery shop – or take a nap – for a peaceful hour or two. You have to spend time with old people and reassure them that they are still important and not forgotten.
This may mean we have to give up watching a favorite TV show or surfing the web for an hour. We may have to step out of our comfort zone and speak to others, even though being an extrovert is not our nature. We may have to do something somewhat unpleasant – but necessary – to better the life of someone else, like carry out their garbage, help them clean up in the aftermath of a disaster, or sit and listen while they drone on about their ailments or troubles.
Whatever we are called to do in Jesus’ name, we must do. And we must do this without fanfare, complaint, the need for recognition, or even gratitude. We must do this because we love Jesus… and His sheep, who He has called us to feed.
As you make your New Year’s resolutions, consider putting Jesus at the top of the list. Ask Him to show you how and where to serve... and who to feed. Believe it or not, Jesus is calling on others to feed you in His name, as well. Resolve to give as good as you get… or better! Make serving others your number one resolution, and watch what happens in 2012!

When couples marry, the bride often changes her surname to that of the groom to signify her commitment and the beginning of a new life. While we don’t go to the extreme of changing our name on January 1st, many of us will vow to make significant changes in our lives… weight loss, kicking habits, getting a degree, starting an exercise program… maybe even starting a new career or moving to a new location! Change is inevitable… and often, change is good!
Making changes of a Spiritual nature are often just what The Doctor ordered. This is a great time to take stock of our Christian life and see where we need to make a few changes. Maybe we need to reinforce our prayer life. Maybe we need to confess a few sins and start living more like a disciple of Christ and less like the devil’s agent. Maybe we need to commit to serving God more and ourself a little less. Or maybe there are some who still need to make major changes – give their heart to Jesus and invite the Holy Spirit to dwell within their heart.
Whatever Spiritual changes you make, today is the perfect time to begin. The other changes you want to incorporate may be important – and positive – but nothing will trump your efforts to become more in tune with God’s will for your life. Spend some time today talking to Him about how and where to start… and Happy New Year! May the coming year be the best, most blessed year you’ve experienced yet!
