Malachi 3:10
Bring all the tithes into the storehouse so that there will be food enough in my Temple; if you do, I will open up the windows of heaven for you and pour out a blessing so great you won’t have room enough to take it in!

“Try it! Let me prove it to you!

I’ve been helping Timothy’s room mother “chair” with the holiday parties this year.  It seems that in Zola’s kindergarten class, there are plenty of parents lined up and ready to help.  By the time the children get to second grade, the enthusiasm has waned and that number has greatly dwindled. So while we have managed to get plenty of “donations” – party favors, food, and money – we have had trouble getting parents to come and actually help with activities.

For the Fall Party, more than a dozen parents actually came to the party…but only 3 or four had agreed to help serve refreshments, play games, decorate, and clean up.  A week from today, we will have the Christmas party, and I will be interested to see how much physical help we are able to muster!

It’s easy to grab a few cupcakes, pick up some party favors at the dollar store, or send a check to cover the cost of decorations. It’s another to actually show up and do the work…to give time and effort. I understand that parents work - now, more than ever.  But I also know that a lot of people think that it won’t be fun to help the children…or they won’t be good at it.  And the truth is…the adults will get more from the experience than the children, in many instances.

Here’s the thing…a lot of us write a check for 10% to the church…and we think we are done. But I don’t believe this is what was meant by these scriptures about “tithing.” Sure…churches need money to operate. But they need physical participation, also. People in your community need a helping hand as much as they need your dollars. The world at large needs to be encouraged, nurtured, and helped in a myriad of ways that involve actually getting in there and doing the work!

Should we “tithe” to the church?  Yes!  I know from watching my Mam-ma Polly take 10% off the top every month and give it to her church that she received countless blessings in return. She never ran short…there was always abundance in her life.  But I also know that she gave far more than this 10% of her monthly Social Security pension. She gave of her time, talents, physical energy, prayers, and much more.  And God blessed her greatly for her efforts.

Examine your life and prayerfully consider what you give to God…and how you give it.  Are you simply writing a check and moving on with other things…or are you giving in every way that you can, to the best of your ability?  Are you missing out on blessings that could be yours if you gave more creatively?  Make this the season that you step outside of your comfort zone and start really “tithing” to God and His children.  And if you want to come play Christmas Bingo with some second graders next week, let me know!

1 Corinthians 16:2
On every Lord’s Day each of you should put aside something from what you have earned during the week, and use it for this offering. The amount depends on how much the Lord has helped you earn. Don’t wait until I get there and then try to collect it all at once.

When I was a little girl, our church gave a box of envelopes to every person in each family who were members.  There was one for each Sunday, and I think a box held enough envelopes for three months.  We were to put our “offering” in this envelope and take it to church on Sunday.  I’m sure there wasn’t much money in the envelopes for myself and my sister and brother…and I can remember a few times when we had nothing to put in and felt embarrassed.  When I took over caring for my Mam-ma Polly as she aged, I paid her “tithe” each month.  Mam-ma gave me her envelopes…almost the same ones as those from my childhood.  For a while, I put a check in the envelopes each week so that she could put on the collection plate…but she began to forget, and the envelopes collected in her purse!  So I started making a direct deposit each month.  When she would ask, “Did you send my tithe?” I would answer confidently, “Yes…it’s there.”

There are a lot of ways that I could go on this scripture passage, but what I want to emphasize today is not that we should give an envelope of money to the church each Sunday.  Rather, I would like to remind each of us that God wants us to be present and to give Him all we can each and every week.  If we have to set up some sort of “auto-draft” system for ourselves in order to serve Him, let’s do it!  The point is not to put off serving God until another day/week/month that seems better. In the words of the Apostle Paul, don’t wait until the end and try to collect your gifts to present all at once!

You know what I’m talking about.  We feel that gentle nudge from God to help someone or make a phone call, and we say, “I’ll do that later.”  And “later” never comes.  We say, “I would LOVE to serve in the soup kitchen or deliver Meals on Wheels” – or whatever it is that tugs at your heart…but we never do it.  This scripture is reminding us that NOW is the time to serve.  TODAY is the day to give!

I can assure you that none of us are assured another day on this earth…so procrastinating with our “giving” is simply not an option!  Use the “envelope” system or whatever helps you stay on track, but get busy giving in the name of Jesus!  When you meet Him face-to-face, be able to say, “I heard You calling, and I did my best to give my all.”  That’s the least we can do for the One who gave ALL for us, isn’t it?

1 Chronicles 29:1-5
David told the crowd: God chose my son Solomon to build the temple, but Solomon is young and has no experience. This is not just any building—this is the temple for the Lord God! That’s why I have done my best to get everything Solomon will need to build it—gold, silver, bronze, iron, wood, onyx, turquoise, colored gems, all kinds of precious stones, and marble.

Besides doing all that, I have promised to give part of my own gold and silver as a way of showing my love for God’s temple. Almost one hundred twenty tons of my finest gold and over two hundred fifty tons of my silver will be used to decorate its walls and to make the gold and silver objects. Now, who else will show their dedication to the Lord by giving gifts for building his temple?

Last year, several events culminated in the lack of a leader for our church’s annual children’s Christmas program.  I told our Director of Music that I would gladly help…but I could not take on the role of leader, because of my mother’s illness.  If necessary, I wanted to be able to step aside at a moment’s notice - and not leave the children in limbo.  So my friend, Chris, who already leads the youth choir, agreed to take charge of this program. Chris and I make a pretty good team…and since I knew most of the children from Sunday school, my role as assistant was the perfect fit.

As time approached to begin practices this year, Chris and I once again agreed to handle the Christmas program.  However, shortly before the first rehearsal, Chris’s dad passed away. I let her know that I was willing to do more and “cover” for her, if needed. But Chris never missed a beat.  She says that having this program to command her focus has been helpful. A woman in our church who has experience with acting and public speaking stepped up to work with our children who have speaking parts. Once again, we are all working as a team to produce a program that is going to bless everyone involved. We are using our talents and abilities to give back to God.

In 1 Chronicles 29:1-5, David is telling the people of Israel that he has done his part to build this temple to glorify God.  Now he is asking them to do theirs by giving what they can.  Here is the important thing to note…David was rich, and plenty able to provide the finest gold and silver for decoration of the temple. A few others might have been equally rich…but many were not wealthy at all. Still, each one had something that he/she could contribute.  And this is the point for us.

Your greatest gift to God may not be money. It may not even be time or talent.  Your gift may be to pray for others and encourage them.  It may be to make phone calls, work in the kitchen, visit shut-ins, or text friends to ask, “How are you doing today?”  The point is that we ALL have SOMETHING to give to glorify God.  We just have to figure out what it is…and then start giving!

Last night at our children’s program practice, Timmy got out of his seat, came to me and gave me a big hug.  Later, my cousin messaged me to say that her little boy, Owen, had looked at a Christmas shirt I made him and said, “Debbie gives good stuff!”  These are two seven-year-olds who give some pretty good stuff themselves! And if little children can give what they are able to make life better for someone else and glorify God, don’t you think we ought to be able to do this?

Are you giving what you can – when and where you are able?  In this season of “Black Friday” and “Cyber Monday” - and picking out the perfect gift for Aunt Sue or that special someone in your life - shouldn’t we pause and consider our gifts to God?  After all, He gave US the perfect Gift in the form of His Son, Jesus Christ!

Are you doing your part…and giving “good stuff” for the glory of God?  Isn’t this the perfect time to begin?

Matthew 7:13-14
“Don’t look for shortcuts to God. The market is flooded with surefire, easygoing formulas for a successful life that can be practiced in your spare time. Don’t fall for that stuff, even though crowds of people do. The way to life—to God!—is vigorous and requires total attention."

We’re all about a good shortcut!  From combinations of characters on our keypad that let us make fancy symbols or print with the touch of a button…to diet supplements that promise to burn fat while we sleep…to the lottery tickets that bring the hope of making us instant millionaires…we welcome any and all opportunities to do things quickly and easily.  So why would we be any different when it comes to our spiritual life?

Today is my 59th birthday.  I woke up with the same white hair…the same extra pounds…and the same age spots and wrinkles that confirm that I’ve been on this planet for nearly six decades!  There is no magic pill to “turn back the clock”…and that’s okay.  Because today, I woke up!  I was able to stand, walk, and talk…greet my husband who has loved me for almost 45 years (and shared his last name for nearly 42 of them)…and enjoy a cooling thundershower that moved through our area.

My Facebook wall and e-mail account are flooded with well wishes from people who love me.  A dear friend sent me an e-card from an artist that my mother loved.  In fact, Mother sent me one of this artist’s cards nearly every birthday in recent years…and today, my friend felt the urge to send me TWO of them. So I feel as though I have received a “nod” from my parents in heaven on this day.  Greg has planned a special pizza dinner for me and invited our immediate family to join us this evening.

God is blessing me every minute…and I am working hard to pay attention!  That means that even on this day, I am studying His word…seeking His will…spending time with Him in prayer and thanksgiving.  I know that my eternal future is secured in Heaven…but I also know that God expects big things out of me every minute that I am alive on this earth.  And He has the same expectations for you! The promise of Heaven may be the ultimate “winning lottery ticket”…but there won’t be any luck involved in cashing it!

So as we celebrate the birth of our country today (and the birthday of a few friends!), let’s remember that there are no shortcuts with God.  We can’t cut corners or use gimmicks and tricks to get where we are going with Him and fulfill His purposes along the way.  We have to embrace life and share His abundance with others…love them fully…forgive wrongdoings and operate in encouragement…offer a kind word and a glimmer of hope…and demonstrate just how amazingly good God is to each of us.

None of us are promised another day…so we must make the most of this one!  We must give God our total attention and effort…even on a national holiday!  We seem to find lots of ways to honor our nation on the Fourth of July…but what are you doing to honor your new life in Christ?  Are you doing the hard work to serve God today…or are you taking a few shortcuts?  Isn’t it time to get this right?

1 John 4:18
We need have no fear of someone who loves us perfectly; his perfect love for us eliminates all dread of what he might do to us. If we are afraid, it is for fear of what he might do to us and shows that we are not fully convinced that he really loves us.

I am blessed to say that I am fully convinced of Greg’s love for me.  I know that not everyone can say this about their relationship…nor can every child say this about his/her parents.  Sadly, we live in a world where unconditional, perfect love is not the norm.  And I do not wear rose-colored glasses.  I know that sometimes I say/do things that aggravate Greg to no end.  But still, he loves me and always has my best interests at heart.  I do not take this for granted…but man, am I ever glad to be so loved. And I hope that he knows that I love him unconditionally, as well!

I also love Timothy, Zola and Nathan beyond description.  I would do almost anything for these children…yet there are times that they get on my last nerve!  They are, after all, normal children…so irritating adults is somewhat their job!  But they know that I love them…and as far as I can tell, they are not the least bit afraid of me!

None of this “human love” can compare to God’s affection for us.  Sure…we all aggravate Him immeasurably at times…but this does not diminish His love for us.  Yet some of us are scared to death of Him.  I will admit…for many years, I was afraid of God.  I operated in fear…I worried that every time I failed Him, I was destined to be rejected and tossed into the depths of hell.  Let me assure you…that was a miserable way to live – and it is NOT God’s desire for us in the least!

It is time for us to embrace God’s love for us – and accept Him completely.  This is not the same thing as taking Him for granted, which would be totally wrong.  Instead, we are to respect God and His power, care, grace, and mercy.  But we are also to graciously and honorably say, “Thank you!  I will gladly operate in Your love and care and do all I can to glorify such an amazing gift!”

This is the perfect week to shift from a relationship of fearful servanthood to discipleship based in love and gratitude. Are you fully convinced that God really loves you…and do you demonstrate this in your daily living?  Isn’t this a good time to begin?
