Romans 8:18-23
Yet what we suffer now is nothing
compared to the glory he will give us later. For all creation is waiting
patiently and hopefully for that future day when God will resurrect his
children. For on that day thorns and thistles, sin, death, and decay —
the things that overcame the world against its will at God’s
command—will all disappear, and the world around us will share in the
glorious freedom from sin which God’s children enjoy.
For we know
that even the things of nature, like animals and plants, suffer in
sickness and death as they await this great event. And even we
Christians, although we have the Holy Spirit within us as a foretaste of
future glory, also groan to be released from pain and suffering. We,
too, wait anxiously for that day when God will give us our full rights
as his children, including the new bodies he has promised us—bodies that
will never be sick again and will never die.

A few weeks after my dad
died, I was telling a friend about how much he suffered…the two years of
daily dialysis that confined him to bed and a machine for 14 hours
every night…the chronic depression that made him want to lie in that bed
and beg to die much of the time…the constant itching and sensitivity to
smells and tastes that goes along with renal failure and makes one
miserable…the countless trips to the hospital and Emergency Room for
treatments for everything from anxiety to blood loss. And in the midst
of this, my dad lost his only son and suffered incredible grief and
heartache. He often cried, “I want to go with him.” I noted that after
all of this, my dad had a stroke one day post hernia surgery that
paralyzed him from the chest down…and a few hours later, a heart attack
took his life. I questioned why Daddy had to suffer like this, when the
ultimate result was “sudden” death.
I will never forget my
friend’s response. He asked, “In the scheme of things, wasn’t all of
that suffering just a ‘blip on the screen’ compared to what awaited your
dad in heaven forever and ever?” He went on to suggest that we think
about our earthly suffering in terms of time as we know it…but in
comparison to Eternity and the peace and joy that awaits us there, it
loses much of its punch and power.
Do not misunderstand me…I know that many have suffered.
I do not in any way wish to diminish any person’s grief, physical
discomfort and illness, and heartaches of all kinds. I know that people
are physically, mentally and emotionally ravaged by lousy childhoods,
war, the violence and hatred of others, and horrific injuries and
diseases. I acknowledge human and animal cruelty…and how agonizing it
can be to endure cancer, Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, and other terrible
diseases. I know that life can be very hard for many. And it is easy to
ask God, “WHY?”
But I also know that because I trust God…because I believe in His promises…the suffering will
end – and it will have been a “blip on the screen” for those who
trusted Him and waited anxiously for Heaven. In the meantime, suffering
is real for so many…and to those who suffer, I say, “God sees you. He
knows you are hurting, and He is not punishing you. He is drawing you
close in your pain, heartache and grief. He is strengthening your
‘faith muscle’ as you rely more on Him and less on yourself to do these
really hard things.”
I have discovered in the last few days that
I’ve been relying too much on my own strength in recent months – and not
enough on the power of God…and I didn’t even realize it. I have
finally humbled myself and admitted to God that I need His help…that
“life” has been a lot harder than I thought it was going to be…and I
cannot do this without Him. I know that I am not going to be instantly
“better” because of this…but my focus has shifted. I am looking at the
bigger picture, rather than the “blip on the screen.”
I am
recognizing just how much I need God in my life…His grace, mercy,
forgiveness, and healing. I have redoubled my determination to walk in
faith even more…and to let God carry me as I focus on a broader
landscape – and the promise of Heaven – and less on the past and the
immediate present. There will be plenty of unpleasant events and
circumstances yet to come in my lifetime, but I will not face them
alone. I will do all I can to wait patiently for God to lead me out of
these adversities…and I will look forward to the glory of Heaven and the
perfect peace that He is preparing for me there. What about you?

Romans 8:12-14
So, dear brothers, you have no obligations whatever to your old sinful nature to do what it begs you to do. For if you keep on following it you are lost and will perish, but if through the power of the Holy Spirit you crush it and its evil deeds, you shall live. For all who are led by the Spirit of God are sons of God.

Some 20 years ago, Greg and I would have been spending summer Sunday afternoons out on the lake, with our pontoon boat tied together with several other pontoons and a ski boat or two. We would be with our friends, soaking up the sun and enjoying our beautiful crystal clear lake. This morning at church, one of our “boat buddies” (who is now the father of four children ages 2-10) said, “I no longer tie up in a cove like we used to do…it’s too dangerous for kids.” Greg and I no longer even own a boat. We take our children to the indoor pool at the local Aquatic Center. Times have changed…and we have changed with them!
We could buy another boat and go back to the cove on the lake with our friends. Some have grown children now…others have small, young families. It would be the same – yet different…and we are not bound to keep doing what we always did. Life changes, and we change with it.
In the same way, we are not bound to continue our old sinful ways once we give our hearts and lives to Jesus. We have a new focus…new interests…a new way of doing things. You may be one of those people who really had a pretty good life as a sinner. You didn’t break rules…you were kind to others and cared about their needs…you observed the laws, went to church, and “did all the right things.” It might seem like your “old life” was not all that different from the new one…that doing what you always did would not really be that bad even now.
Here’s the difference…the power of the Holy Spirit. Because of the commitment you made to Jesus…and His Holy Spirit working in and through you…everything about your “new life” is better. “New and improved” are the words of the day. It may not feel all that different…but your focus HAS shifted – or it should have. Instead of just going through the motions, you should now be calling on the Holy Spirit to guide your days…direct your paths…ordain your thoughts, words and actions. Where you once muddled through each day, He now gives you a life of “intention”…a holy purpose…and the promise of Eternal Life.
I sometimes think an afternoon on the lake would be fun. But then I think about the heat and sunburn…all of the gear to load and unload…the worry of making sure that the kids stayed safe…and I am totally content with things as they are. And I wouldn’t trade my “new life in Christ” and the company of the Holy Spirit for a single second of the “old life” as a sinner.
All I have to do is think of how glorious “life” will be in Paradise for all eternity…and how carefully God tends to my every need in this life through His Holy Spirit, and I know that this is the life for me…forever and ever. What about you?

Hebrews 11:32-40
What else can I say? There isn’t enough time to tell about Gideon, Barak, Samson, Jephthah, David, Samuel, and the prophets. Their faith helped them conquer kingdoms, and because they did right, God made promises to them. They closed the jaws of lions and put out raging fires and escaped from the swords of their enemies. Although they were weak, they were given the strength and power to chase foreign armies away.
Some women received their loved ones back from death. Many of these people were tortured, but they refused to be released. They were sure that they would get a better reward when the dead are raised to life. Others were made fun of and beaten with whips, and some were chained in jail. Still others were stoned to death or sawed in two or killed with swords. Some had nothing but sheep skins or goat skins to wear. They were poor, mistreated, and tortured. The world did not deserve these good people, who had to wander in deserts and on mountains and had to live in caves and holes in the ground.
All of them pleased God because of their faith! But still they died without being given what had been promised. This was because God had something better in store for us. And he did not want them to reach the goal of their faith without us.

Nathan and I were watching YouTube videos the other day of ordinary people opening boxed toys. Every few minutes, Nathan would say, “I want that!” or “I need that toy, Debbie…can we get it?” I would tell him, “Not now,” as I made a mental note of what he liked – or put something on my “wish list” at Amazon.com for future reference. Then Nathan would say…”Yeah…but for my birthday!” I would acknowledge…”Well, MAYBE for your birthday.”
It’s April…Nathan’s birthday is not until August. For a 3½-year-old, waiting that long is akin to adults waiting for Jesus’ second coming…it’s a LONG TIME! And if the truth be told, a lot of the toys on “the list” will never be purchased. If Nathan doesn’t receive a Spider-Man mask that talks and a Spider-Man glove that “spins webs,” he will survive. And he will be so excited over what he DOES get, that he will hardly notice that anything is missing.
Life is largely about priorities. In one of my mother’s journals, she mentioned her arch-enemy…time. Mother never had enough of it. She said her husband pointed out to her that we all have 24 hours in a day. I’m sure that did not go over well…and I get that! We all have desires and goals…aspirations for things we want to accomplish. We all have struggles and challenges…illnesses and injuries…hurts and heavy hearts at times. And we all hope against hope that God will fix ALL of this! And He does…but not always as we imagined or intended!
Just as there will be birthday parties – and presents – for Nathan and his siblings, there will be a “party to end all parties” someday for us in Heaven, if we have surrendered our hearts - and sins - to Jesus. All of the things we hoped and dreamed for – and all of the requests we made known to God - will not matter at that time, because the Ultimate Prize of His perfect promises and designs for our Eternity will be manifested. In other words…a lot of the things we fight so hard for - and think we want or need on this earth - really won’t matter in the long run.
Believe me…I’ve thought about this a lot lately. My mother left many “projects” on the table - books and articles she wanted to write…trips she wanted to take…things she wanted to do with her great-grandchildren…and more. She quite literally ran out of time. And you know what? None of it matters today. She sits in Heaven at the feet of Jesus with other believers who went before her…and she would not return to work on her “list” for all of the tea in China! God has rewarded her with more time than she can use…and glorious activities to fill it. She is at peace and has no frustration or sense of urgency about anything. And this is waiting for us someday, as well.
So let’s shift our focus a little. We must continue to have goals…and hope. We must continue to believe that God is in the business of fulfilling promises…healing and righting wrongs…fixing our messes and giving us the desires of our heart. But we must also understand that these must all line up with HIS desires and plans for us…and it all pales in comparison to what He has waiting for us in Heaven.
If we got all that God promised us now, there would nothing to look forward to afterward. We must live with faith that everything gets better in Paradise…and operate in hope and confidence until the day comes that we see it firsthand. Are you pleasing God with your faith these days?

Proverbs 13:13
If you reject God’s teaching,
you will pay the price;
if you obey his commands,
you will be rewarded.

People all over the country have “lottery fever” as the Powerball jackpot is approaching $900 million. Reporters from countless news outlets are interviewing ticket buyers who speculate on how they will “spend the reward!” The options run the gamut from “quit my job” to “buy my parents a new home” to “travel the world” and more!
It has now been a little better than a week since we took my mother to the hospital Emergency Department in what was a precarious condition, to put it mildly. And it’s pretty well gone downhill since. The days have been filled with all sorts of emotions and situations that we have had to “digest” and accept. In many ways, our worlds have each been turned upside down as we have adjusted to new schedules, reports from doctors and nurses, close quarters and new relationships with family members and friends, coping with a myriad of emotions that change each hour, and dealing with a bevy of unknowns.
It’s a lot…and we are all doing the best that we can. And when she has a lucid moment, my little mother will often say, “God will take care of this.” I know that she is right…because my mother never rejected God’s teaching. She has always obeyed His commands…and God is not about to desert her – especially now. A reward is coming…and probably fairly soon. It’s not of the $900 million variety – but quite frankly, it’s something even better!
We’ve all got “Lottery Fever” of the best kind around here…and soon, my mother will cash in her “ticket.” Obey God’s commands…surrender to His teaching, and know that when life on this earth is over, you really do have the winning ticket – to a “Heavenly Lottery” that provides Eternity in the presence of God Almighty! It truly doesn’t get any better than that!
Are you ready to be a “Heavenly winner?” Will this be the day that you begin to really follow God’s teaching and obey His commands? Aren’t you ready to get in the running for the best “Lottery” of all?

Philippians 3:12-14
I’m not saying that I have this all together, that I have it made. But I am well on my way, reaching out for Christ, who has so wondrously reached out for me. Friends, don’t get me wrong: By no means do I count myself an expert in all of this, but I’ve got my eye on the goal, where God is beckoning us onward—to Jesus. I’m off and running, and I’m not turning back.
Scripture quotations from The Message. © 1993, 1994, 1995, 1996, 2000, 2001, 2002 by Eugene Peterson. Used by permission of NavPress, Colorado Springs, CO. All rights reserved.
On January 15, 2015, climbers Tommy Caldwell and Kevin Jorgeson reached the summit of The Dawn Wall of El Capitan in Yosemite National Park. At an elevation of 3,000 feet, this smooth sheer granite mountainside is considered to be the most difficult free climb in the world. Somewhere around 70 people greeted the climbers atop the summit and celebrated with champagne.
This was not the first time these two had attempted the climb. In 2010, Jorgeson broke his ankle early in an ascent and could not continue...while Caldwell got to the most difficult pitch and could not finish. The two climbers subsequently worked on the areas of the mountain that gave them the most trouble…before attempting the full climb again in December 2014.
I watched footage of the climb on television news reports...and even from the safety of my own home, I sometimes felt like I could not “look down”. There was coverage of the men lounging in "tents" that were somehow tethered to the side of the mountain. I marveled at how calmly they lay reading, texting, eating...as if they were perfectly secure on level ground.
Our journey as Christians is something like the free climb of El Capitan's Dawn Wall...fraught with potential for danger and disaster, yet so worth the struggle. It is reported that these climbers…Caldwell in particular…were focused on accomplishing this ascent with something akin to single-minded obsession. They “kept their eye on the goal” and trusted in the safety measures they had set in place – and the coaching and encouragement from each other, family members and friends – and they forged onward and upward. And this is what we are called to do with Christ.
There will be days when we will be tempted to “look down”…there will be “injuries” and setbacks along the way. But if we stay focused…if we keep on looking toward heaven and working toward the goal of standing before Jesus someday in celebration of a “good climb”…we will get there. God will make it so.
Don’t throw in the towel. Don’t let “life” beat you down and discourage you to the point that you cannot continue the “climb” with Christ. Hear God’s voice encouraging you to reach higher…to dig deeper…to stick with Him for the long haul. Feel His hands supporting you in safety…His arms surrounding you in love…His spirit filling your heart. Know that you can do this…that with God, all things truly are possible. Keep looking upward toward Heaven and working toward the goal that God has set for you in Jesus. Now…don’t you have some climbing to do?
