Galatians 6:9
And let us not get tired of doing what is right, for after a while we will reap a harvest of blessing if we don’t get discouraged and give up.

“Unless someone like you cares a whole awful lot, nothing is going to get better. It’s not.”  ~  Dr. Seuss in The Lorax

If you are familiar with
The Lorax, by Dr. Seuss, you know that it’s a story about greed.  A character known as the “Once-ler” cuts down a “Truffula tree” and creates a multi-purpose object called a “thneed”.  The Lorax protests the harvesting of the Truffula trees, citing a need to protect this vegetation and the surrounding environment.  But the Once-ler persists.  And as he sells his “thneeds” and begins to make money, he recruits others to help produce them.  This leads to all sorts of problems…from pollution to safety hazards and risk to the lives of family members and friends.  Ultimately, the last Truffula tree is hacked down…and there is no way to produce more “thneeds”.  The workers are sick and injured…and things are in a mess.

It looks hopeless…and the Lorax disappears into the sky through a hole in the smog.  Later, a boy comes along and begins asking questions.  Where is the Lorax?  What happened?  The whole story is a flashback sequence, as the Once-ler explains what has transpired.  He looks down upon a stone on which the Lorax had etched one word…unless.  The Once-ler realizes that the Lorax was trying to tell him that UNLESS someone cares enough, things will never get better.  UNLESS someone tirelessly does what is right, we’ll never get anywhere!  So the Once-ler gives the little boy a seed…for a Truffula tree…and encourages him to plant it and set things right.

I once taught a series of Senior High Sunday school lessons one summer using Dr. Seuss books.  The kids thought I was nuts for the first Sunday or two…and then they started showing up in bigger numbers.  They were eager to see what book I would choose for the week and how I would dovetail it with scriptures to discover what God wanted to tell them and how this related to their life.  We can learn a lot from a children’s book author…which is proof that God can use anyone – ANYWHERE!   And the point I want to make today is that we cannot give up.  We have to be like the Lorax …we have to keep standing up for what is right.

We have to keep helping people – and loving them – even when they hurt our feelings or disrespect us.  We may have doors slammed in our faces, unanswered phone calls or messages (or even rude and dramatic hang-ups!), be the victim of unkind words and gestures, and more.  We may feel discouraged, insulted, offended, heartbroken...and weary.  But we must keep doing what God has commanded us to do in His name.

Have we learned nothing from Jesus?  He was bruised, beaten, spit upon, humiliated, ridiculed, slapped…and crucified…all because of His message of love and kindness, grace and mercy, forgiveness and humble obedience to our Heavenly Father.  For offering us Eternal Life, His very life was brutally taken…for our sins, His blood literally poured from His body and spread over the ground.  In light of these facts, how can we fail to persist?

Don’t be confused…there is a difference between giving up and stepping aside to allow God room to work.  I like to think that perhaps this is what the Lorax did.  He had done the right thing…always and forever…and when there was nothing else that HE could do, he stepped aside.  Ultimately, the Once-ler realized his mistake.  Perhaps that wasn’t merely a “coincidence”!  Maybe God used the Lorax to plant “seeds” of hope and reason…to teach long-lasting lessons that would not fully “bear fruit” until after he had moved on.   There have been many times in my life when I have become discouraged over someone or a certain situation.  Often, others have told me, “You are planting seeds that you cannot even realize – and may never see develop.  But they are there.”  I believe this is true…I have seen it firsthand in my life and the lives of others.

Let’s all remember three things… 1) it’s not over until GOD says “It’s over!”;  2) just because we cannot readily see results doesn’t mean that our efforts to do the right thing – to love and honor God with our obedience, our actions and our service – is not productive; and 3) “Unless someone like you cares a whole awful lot, nothing is going to get better. It’s not.”  God is calling us to care.  He is calling us to hang in there…to stick with it…to keep on “keepin’ on” in Jesus’ name.  We cannot rest on our laurels…or slack off and hope that someone else will step up and take our place.  The time for rest and reward will come…someday…in God’s time.  And we will enjoy it fully in His presence.  I’ll see you there… won’t I?

Psalms 119:165
Those who love your instructions have great peace and do not stumble.

Recently, I tried out a couple of new recipes I found on Pinterest.  We invited my mother-in-law, Elaine, over for dinner. It’s always dicey to try out new recipes on a dinner guest, but Elaine is a good sport… and the dishes were actually quite tasty – crock pot lasagna and a peanut butter pie.  As we finished dessert, Elaine asked, “Did you have a recipe for this pie?”  I laughed and said “Oh, yes… no telling how this pie would have turned out if I had made it up in my head!”  I know that I would probably not have thought to follow the same steps – and the taste and texture of my “version” would have been markedly different!

There are a few dishes in my repertoire that I have made enough times that I don’t really need to follow a recipe (although I guess technically, I still follow the recipe in my head!).  But printed instructions for most entrees and desserts serve as a comfort – and a confidence booster!  If I follow the recipe, I have a pretty good idea that I won’t stumble… and that gives me great peace.  The same can be said for sewing patterns.  When I veer off course and try to create a garment without referring to the pattern and instructions, I have a pretty good shot at making something that is un-wearable… or at the very least doesn’t fit correctly. And when I stray from a recipe, there is a fairly good chance the dish won’t be nearly as tasty.

When it comes to following God’s instructions, there is really no difference.  We can try to do things our way…and sometimes skirt by with little repercussion.  But more often, we experience an epic fail. We make a huge mess of things…and our life is anything but peaceful and filled with days of “smooth sailing”.  And it’s almost always because we didn’t follow “God’s recipe or pattern”.

In Deuteronomy 6:4-9 (CEV), we read “Listen, Israel! The Lord our God is the only true God! So love the Lord your God with all your heart, soul, and strength.  Memorize his laws and tell them to your children over and over again. Talk about them all the time, whether you’re at home or walking along the road or going to bed at night, or getting up in the morning.  Write down copies and tie them to your wrists and foreheads to help you obey them. Write these laws on the door frames of your homes and on your town gates.”  In Matthew and Luke, Jesus instructs us to love our neighbors as we love ourselves.  This is what I would call a good “pattern” or “recipe”!  If we will truly commit to following these guidelines, our lives should be filled with steady steps and great peace.  There will surely be “bumps in the road”… but God will be with us to help us regroup and move forward.

Whose “recipe” or “pattern” will you follow?  Will you love the instructions God has given us and make them an innate part of your daily living?  Are you really willing to risk God’s peace and a relatively bump-free road in life just to have your own way?  Are you following your own rules… or God’s?   How’s that working for you?

1 Peter 3:15-18
If with heart and soul you're doing good, do you think you can be stopped? Even if you suffer for it, you're still better off. Don't give the opposition a second thought. Through thick and thin, keep your hearts at attention, in adoration before Christ, your Master. Be ready to speak up and tell anyone who asks why you're living the way you are, and always with the utmost courtesy. Keep a clear conscience before God so that when people throw mud at you, none of it will stick. They'll end up realizing that they're the ones who need a bath. It's better to suffer for doing good, if that's what God wants, than to be punished for doing bad. That's what Christ did definitively: suffered because of others' sins, the Righteous One for the unrighteous ones. He went through it all—was put to death and then made alive—to bring us to God.

My brother was what we called a “husky boy” when we were little. I was tall and gangly… he was shorter – and stout! Even though I was four years older, Tim could take me down on any given day. And so it was one day when he tackled me in our front yard and started to pummel me, as siblings sometimes do. My dad stepped to the front door and said, “Hit him back!” I looked up and tearfully said, “I can’t!” I was always a softie when it came to my brother… but even in that childhood moment, I also knew that retaliation was not the answer!

I have to wonder at those who insist that biting a baby who bites is the solution to get him/her to stop. What part of hitting a child tells them it is not okay to hit others? Like many siblings who fought, I “suffered through” the growing pains with my little brother – and the frequent tussles we had over virtually nothing. And in his last days, I also apologized profusely to him for the times when I was not so virtuous… and even let him take the blame – and the punishment – for things I had done. To his credit, he graciously forgave me.

As children, we have to learn that slinging mud on another person is not the answer to our problems. Sadly, many of us not only fail this lesson… we actually perfect our technique! There are times when we all want to lash out at someone… when we want to stomp our foot and throw something and say, “Wait just one minute!” In Christ we find the perfect example of suffering for doing good… taking the High Road…and living with the utmost courtesy. Often, we make a much bigger statement by turning and walking away from a fight than staying to participate.

We must all ask the question…“Is this how God wants me to respond? Does He want me to get into this fight… or should I politely go about my business and let my behavior speak for itself?” I am as guilty as the next person of speaking up and lashing out when I shouldn’t. A lot of things we get involved are really not our battles. I’ve been asking God to help me with this… to give me wisdom and the good sense to bite my tongue and walk away when necessary.

At the same time, there will be people who may question your actions… those who feel they need to understand why you are not speaking up on a particular issue or getting involved in certain situations. This is the perfect opportunity for you to share your faith… and to explain how you communicate with God. Don’t be smug about it… but do take these moments as openings for a dialog about how God is working in your life. Convey how He gives you grace, mercy and forgiveness… and how He helps you to extend this to others.

God does not want us to be doormats on His behalf… but He didn’t call us to fight His battles either. It is up to us to know when and where to “hold ‘em or fold ‘em.” We must do all that we can to always represent God and honor Him - and sometimes that means suffering for the good. What about you? Are you able to resist the mud that is thrown in your direction… or has some of it managed to stick? Make today the day you come clean and begin to operate in God’s wisdom and grace. Be certain that your demeanor reflects His… and your heart remains in adoration to Christ. God will handle everything else!

John 15:7-10
Stay joined to me and let my teachings become part of you. Then you can pray for whatever you want, and your prayer will be answered. When you become fruitful disciples of mine, my Father will be honored. I have loved you, just as my Father has loved me. So remain faithful to my love for you. If you obey me, I will keep loving you, just as my Father keeps loving me, because I have obeyed him.

Twenty-six years ago, I was in my eighth year of teaching kindergarten/first grade. My principal was retiring, and his assistant was slated to become his replacement. This woman had once been a fellow teacher… now she was a tyrant who abused all of her former “friends” on a daily basis. I needed a change in more ways than one… and I started seeking an exit strategy. I interviewed in another building for a position as a fifth grade teacher. The principal had asked me in my interview, “What makes you think you can transition from 5-and-six-year-olds to fifth graders?” I assured him I could do it. Everyone who was “in the know” told me the job was mine, and I eagerly anticipated the call from the principal to welcome me… and the subsequent move to another school on the opposite end of town.

One morning the secretary called over the intercom to tell me I had a phone call, and I hurried to the library next door to my classroom. The principal from the other school informed me he had hired someone else. My heart sank, and a huge lump formed in my throat as I thanked him for calling. I phoned my husband, and through tears, I delivered my news. My husband said his first instinct was to drive straight to the school, collect me, and tell everyone that I was quitting – then and there! But in retrospect, we both realized this solved nothing.

After lots of discussion, careful planning, and a lot of prayer, we both decided I should teach for one more year. At that time, I could not see how on earth I would survive it, but I stuck it out… and I think knowing that I was checking the weeks off the calendar (and an exceptionally great class of kiddos!) helped me to persevere. Looking back, that was one of my best years of teaching, in many ways. And because I hung in there and made the most of it, I was blessed more than I can express.

Teaching one more year added more savings to our “nest egg” so that we could both leave our jobs, move back home, and start our own business. Teaching one more year taught me countless lessons in honoring commitments, fighting through hard times, and making the most of even a really stressful situation. By staying that last year, I developed lifelong relationships with some great people and actually had many truly happy experiences. And I learned a lot about trusting God to see me through the rough patches… and use me in spite of the circumstances.

I am sharing this because you may be going through your own rough patch. Things may not be working out like you had hoped or desired… or you may be struggling right now and wondering if your situation will ever improve. I am here to tell you it can – and it will – if you will stay faithful to God. Let Him nurture you and feed you. Allow Him to sustain you in the darkest hours… and to teach you in ways you can’t begin to imagine. Ask God, “Which direction should I take, and how should I get where you want me to go?” Let Him guide your steps and strengthen you throughout the journey.

If someone had been able to show me my life as it is today when I was so frustrated in 1985, I would have found it very hard to believe them, at best. But I know what God can do. I have seen how He can bless. I am learning more every day about how He rewards faithful servants who stick with Him and allow Him to guide them… even through the roughest patches. Our God is so powerful and all-encompassing. What He does for me, He will most certainly do for you, too.

As I share this message of hope with you today, I am reminding myself of the same things. We all need a reminder once in a while that God can handle anything and give us all of the desires of our heart – according to His perfect will. We just have to stick closely to Him and believe in His promises. I’m in… are you?
