1 John 5:13-15
I have written this to you who
believe in the Son of God so that you may know you have eternal life.
And we are sure of this, that he will listen to us whenever we ask him
for anything in line with his will. And if we really know he is
listening when we talk to him and make our requests, then we can be sure
that he will answer us.

I
saw a “pin” on Pinterest titled, “How to pray when you just can’t
focus.” Boy, does that ever describe me lately! The suggestions
included…Pray the “LORD’s Prayer”…Pray out loud…Pray with someone
else…Pray the Psalms.
I have to admit, I take comfort in knowing
that I am not alone…that others mean well yet sometimes struggle to
maintain focus in their prayer life. I am reminded that we are, after
all, mere humans - and subject to becoming easily distracted! The GOOD
NEWS for me is that God is NEVER distracted! He is always watching and
listening…and when we make our requests known to Him, they are heard.
Romans
8:26 reminds us that when we cannot form the words, the Holy Spirit
prays for us. This scripture comforts me greatly! The KEY is to remain
in tune with the Holy Spirit, so that this can happen. But when
we have lost focus (for whatever reason)…when life beats us down to a
point where words just do not form…God still knows our heart and is able
to answer our petitions!
I don’t know about you, but this gives
me tremendous comfort and courage. And I want to share this knowledge
with others. I want us all to understand that there are times in our
lives when we love the LORD with all our hearts…but words simply fail
us. There are situations and circumstances where our needs are
tremendous…and we are completely unable to express them in any sensible
manner. Bolstered with the knowledge that God still hears me – and
answers – during these times…I am overwhelmed with peace, courage, and
confidence.
None of us has a “corner on this market.” What God
does for us, He will gladly do for others who seek His will and desire
to serve Him. I don’t know whether this is a season of great focus for
you…or if your thoughts are scattered to the four winds. But if you are
in step with the Holy Spirit, rest assured that God is hearing you –
and answering perfectly – no matter what you are actually saying.

Deuteronomy 8:3
Yes, he humbled you by letting you go hungry and then feeding you with manna, a food previously unknown to both you and your ancestors. He did it to help you realize that food isn’t everything, and that real life comes by obeying every command of God.

You can’t make this stuff up! I once witnessed a fairly heated discussion at a family dinner between two “camps” – one that swore that Showboat® pork ‘n beans could not be beat…and another that insisted that VanCamp’s® pork ‘n beans were most surely the best! We are a culture obsessed with food…not as sustenance to fuel our bodies and minds, but as art and entertainment. We don’t look at a banana and consider how its nutrients and fiber can make us strong and healthy…we think about how it will taste and whether it has gotten too ripe for consumption. OR…we envision it slathered with ice cream, coated in chocolate, or incorporated into muffins, cake or “quickbread!”
We do not plan our meals based on our true hunger and nutritional needs…but more often around social events, what we are “hungry for” at the moment, and which restaurant we have not patronized this week! We think that we would die without certain foods…or without eating SOMETHING every few hours. In truth, most of us would survive far longer without eating than we can imagine. And were we truly hungry, a lot of “foods” we would never otherwise consider eating might look pretty tasty!
While I have never fasted…at least in a spiritual context…I know people who have done this. They used the time and “energy” that we all pour into thinking about food to concentrate on prayer, Bible study, and seeking God’s presence in their lives. While I do not believe this is the right practice for me…I do not criticize anyone who wants to engage in an occasional Spiritual fast.
But what I do think we need to do is pay closer notice to what grabs our attention. We need to “feed” on God’s word…both His scriptures, and what He tells us and shows us every single day. Recently, my niece Jasmine said that Zola asked her, “Mom, what are you doing?” Jasmine told her, “I’m talking to God.” Four-year-old Zola replied, “Again?!!” Jasmine explained to Zola that we can talk to God any time, as often as we like/need - even all day if we want!
God’s nurture and sustenance is unlike any ordinary meal…we can feast on His provisions night and day! The time has come for us to change our diet…to focus less on edible nourishment, and more on God’s spiritual manna. He may not help us choose which pork ‘n beans are best, but He will supply our needs in every area of real importance. Will this be the day that you begin to truly feed on a steady regimen of God’s word and commands? Don’t you think it should be?

Psalms 80:1
O Shepherd of Israel who leads Israel like a flock; O God enthroned above the Guardian Angels, bend down your ear and listen as I plead. Display your power and radiant glory.
The Living Bible copyright © 1971 by Tyndale House Foundation. Used by permission of Tyndale House Publishers Inc., Carol Stream, Illinois 60188. All rights reserved.
How often do you plead with God about something? If you are like most people, the answer is…”Pretty often!” Now here’s the bigger question…how often do you trust Him to answer? I mean REALLY BELIEVE that God will hear your prayer and act on it. Notice I didn’t say that He will hear and do whatever you asked…because often what we ask for is not what is really needed.
I don’t think I am all that different from a lot of people, and I know that there have been many times that I begged and pleaded with God to DO SOMETHING (translation: make this work out like I want it to, LORD!)…but I didn’t really expect any results.
The time has come for us to stop offering hollow prayers. God may not answer us immediately…or in the way that we expect or desire…but He will answer. He does hear us, and if we earnestly call on Him to display His power and radiant glory, He will do so!
I am learning to talk to God about everything…to give Him my burdens and my desires…and to WAIT on Him to answer. I know that He will…and that He will answer YOU, also. Are you ready to pray expectantly - with faith and intention…or will you just keep telling God your problems and hoping He fixes them?

Philippians 4:6-7
Don’t worry about anything; instead, pray about everything; tell God your needs, and don’t forget to thank him for his answers. If you do this, you will experience God’s peace, which is far more wonderful than the human mind can understand. His peace will keep your thoughts and your hearts quiet and at rest as you trust in Christ Jesus.

On June 9th, a post was shared on Facebook titled “5 Minutes in a Mom’s Head”*…written by Bunmi Laditan, who describes herself as “a writer and social-media obsessed female human…and author of The Honest Toddler: A Child's Guide to Life.” Laditan lives in rural Quebec, by way of California, with her three children and husband…and she contributes to The Huffington Post, Mommyish, Parenting and other websites.
In her “5 Minutes” piece, Laditan says in part:
The thing to remember is that NOTHING is silly or trivial to God! He cares about whether your car is gassed up and your house is decluttered – if that matters to you! He cares whether you are undergoing chemotherapy for a disease that is ravaging your body just as much as the cough or sniffle that has you laid up for a few days. He is concerned about your lack of sleep – regardless of the cause. God wants to handle any – and ALL of your burdens…and exchange them for His inexplicable peace. He wants to give you a heart and mind that is completely at rest in Him.
I don’t know about you, but I’m thinking maybe I should have this scripture passage tattooed on my forearm, where I would be sure to see it several times a day! I need a constant reminder of God’s desire to fill me with peace…always…in ALL WAYS! And maybe you need this reminder, too! It’s normal…human…to worry and fret and have a heart and mind cluttered with all kinds of thoughts and concerns in today’s busy, hectic world. But it’s also totally unnecessary.
I am so thankful that God wants to give us a rest that defies logic…a peace that cannot be rationalized - but is completely real, just the same. And it all starts with a prayer…and a release of our thoughts and cares into His capable hands (followed by a profuse expression of gratitude for His amazing grace and mercy!). What do you think would happen if each morning, you replaced the first five minutes of “pillow talk” in your head with a conversation with God about your day and your concerns? What if you continued to talk to Him throughout the day about each issue that arose – no matter how great or small? Isn’t it worth a try?
Are you ready to experience God’s “peace that passes understanding”? Are you ready for some real rest and stress relief? Have you spoken to Him about this today? Don’t you think it’s time you did?

Even if you are not a mom, you may be one of “those people” whose mind races…especially when your head hits the pillow. Your thoughts and your heart are anything but quiet! Substitute your worries and concerns for those of this mom, and you totally “get” her! “But I have real problems…not the silly, trivial worries she talks about…things far more important than dust mites on Teddy bears and getting organized!” Yeah…but a lot of us worry about those “silly, trivial” things right along with the big issues…like school, work, bills, health, and relationships, and war and peace!
What are they [the kids] fighting about? ...I should probably wash their stuffed animals. What if they're full of dust mites.
What do I need to do today... return calls, answer emails, return texts from days ago... people probably think I'm so rude. I need to get organized. I need to organize this whole house. This room is a mess. I need to declutter.
OK, if I don't get up now we're going to be late. Oh man, I have to stop for gas. I'm on empty. Why do I always wait until the last minute? Because I was rushing home to make dinner.”

Job 13:13-15
Be silent now and leave me alone. Let me speak, and I will face the consequences. Yes, I will take my life in my hands and say what I really think. God might kill me, but I have no other hope. I am going to argue my case with him. But this is what will save me - I am not godless. If I were, I could not stand before him.

“Why don’t you tell me how you really feel!” If you have not ever uttered that phrase to someone, perhaps it has been expressed to you. And truly, there are people with whom we can be brutally honest, “vent” and share our innermost thoughts… and others for whom we sugarcoat the situation. I am truly blessed to have a mate and partner with whom I can be completely honest. I don’t have to pretend to Greg that I am having a good day when I am not. I can share my greatest joys with him with confidence that he will celebrate the victories with me. I can also express my deepest frustration and pain… and he will commiserate and console. It’s a “no-holds-barred” relationship… and I truly treasure this.
I am blessed to share a similar relationship with my best friend Marla Ann… and my cousin Natalie. Because of our relationship and our “history,” we share thoughts and feelings that nobody else would understand. We are comfortable being real and raw with each other about what is happening in our lives. And like the phrase, “What happens in Vegas stays in Vegas,” we know we can be completely honest and transparent with each other… and nobody else will ever hear of it.
So here we are with Job. He is being persecuted and tortured with all sorts of afflictions. And he has decided to ask God exactly why this is happening to him. Others are warning him NOT to question God… suggesting that he will die for his audacity! But here’s the thing… Job knows that his only hope is God. It’s a risk he is willing to take.
Now remember, this all happened to Job long before Jesus came to earth and died for our sins so that we could have first-hand access to God. In Job’s day, mere mortals were not supposed to talk to God directly. They were expected to talk to a high priest who would intercede on their behalf. The nerve of Job to think he could just cry out to God and plead his case! But that is exactly what he did. And this is what we can do, as well.
God is more than our best friend… He is closer than our mate… He is always ready to hear from us - and never betrays our confidence. God wants to hear how we really feel! He can take it! This should be the best news you have had all day! This should fill each of us with hope and confidence… that God is ready, willing, and able to hear our petitions – and to answer them. We truly have nothing to lose. We are not Godless… and He will save us.
I am grateful for Greg, Marla Ann and Natalie. I am glad that God has given me earthly support in the form of these three people. But I am even more grateful for His love and care… and the promises He has made to me to meet my every need. So the question is, “Are you ready to take your life into your own hands and lay it on the line with God?” Is He your hope… your only hope? Will you be completely honest and open with Him and trust His guidance and care? Isn’t this a great day to begin?

Psalm 4:4-5
Complain if you must, but don’t lash out. Keep your mouth shut, and let your heart do the talking. Build your case before God and wait for his verdict.
Scripture quotations from The Message. © 1993, 1994, 1995, 1996, 2000, 2001, 2002 by Eugene Peterson. Used by permission of NavPress, Colorado Springs, CO. All rights reserved.
I’ve been listening to the conversations Timothy has with his toy dinosaurs and jungle animals… and also his bath tub “friends.” You can learn a lot from an imaginative three-year-old! One conversation he had recently involved a “Grandpa” dinosaur and a smaller animal who wanted to come along on an adventure. Grandpa would say, “You can’t come with us…it’s too dangerous. But how can we get across this bridge… got any ideas?”
Timothy worked out his problems in these conversations and arrived at answers. Granted, they were make-believe conversations… and a lot of it was quotes from his videos about “The Land That Time Forgot.” Still, there was a great lesson here. We need to spend some time sharing our frustrations and concerns with God and asking Him… “Got any ideas?” I can assure you, He has plenty of them… and He is more than ready to share His answers with you!
More and more, I find myself in situations where I really need someone to talk to… but the “right person” just doesn’t seem to exist. Either my concerns would be worrisome or hurtful to some… or seem downright ugly and mean to others… or the things that genuinely trouble me sound totally ridiculous and/or as if I am lacking in faith when I say them out loud. So I tell these things to God. NOTHING is too ridiculous, hurtful and mean, or doubtful to share with Him. I can be myself, pour out my heart, and “let it all hang out” before God, and He will not judge me. BUT…He will answer!
God’s verdict will always be right and sound… and if I will just sit still for a while and listen, He will show me exactly what I need to do. A lot of the time we cannot help our feelings… our thoughts and impressions are very real to us. But we don’t need to air them for the world to hear. Instead, all we have to do is pour out our hearts to God and ask, “Got any ideas?” I guarantee you that He does! Who are you talking to these days?
