Matthew 25:1-13
“God’s kingdom is like ten young virgins who took oil lamps and went out to greet the bridegroom. Five were silly and five were smart. The silly virgins took lamps, but no extra oil. The smart virgins took jars of oil to feed their lamps. The bridegroom didn’t show up when they expected him, and they all fell asleep.

“In the middle of the night someone yelled out, ‘He’s here! The bride-groom’s here! Go out and greet him!’

“The ten virgins got up and got their lamps ready. The silly virgins said to the smart ones, ‘Our lamps are going out; lend us some of your oil.’

“They answered, ‘There might not be enough to go around; go buy your own.’

“They did, but while they were out buying oil, the bridegroom arrived. When everyone who was there to greet him had gone into the wedding feast, the door was locked.

“Much later, the other virgins, the silly ones, showed up and knocked on the door, saying, ‘Master, we’re here. Let us in.’

“He answered, ‘Do I know you? I don’t think I know you.’

“So stay alert. You have no idea when he might arrive.

I went to Walmart this afternoon after I finished helping with Timothy’s class at school.  I know…Friday afternoon at Walmart = BAD IDEA!  But it was especially chaotic today, and I chalked it up to the fact that there are only 9 days left until Christmas.  Maybe people had decided, as had I, that along with our milk and bread, it would be a good idea to go ahead and pick up a few things for the holiday meal…last-minute gifts and stocking stuffers…and anything else we might need in the next week.  Hopefully, this would save us a return trip…or at least some of the hassle of a lengthy shopping trip.

When I entered the store, it was a miserable 37 degrees outside - with a pretty good wind.  When I left, there was also a fine mist in the air.  I didn’t know until I got home that freezing drizzle is just north of us in neighboring counties!  Let me tell you, nothing will send people to Walmart faster than a little precipitation and near-freezing temps or the mention of ice and/or snow in the forecast – and we have both!

Isn’t it funny that we are all about going to the store and getting milk and bread if we think there is even the slightest chance of frozen precipitation…but we are more than willing to play fast and loose with our Christian faith!  We’ll stockpile food, movies, and everything we need to be “snowed in” for a few days…but we won’t store up the things that draw us closer to God and prepare us for a face-to-face meeting with Jesus.  We’ve got all manner of time and energy to drop everything and gather our supplies for a “snowstorm”…but we don’t have time to open our Bibles or talk to God about anything and everything – much less share the Good News of Jesus with someone else.

We don’t have time to help a neighbor…stop and truly ask someone how he/she is doing – and stick around to hear the answer…or offer another person kindness and care.  We are too busy with WHATEVER to do the things that Jesus clearly says in scripture will make the difference for God’s Kingdom.  We may not know the hour of Jesus’ return, but we are in no hurry to “stock up on milk and bread” so that we are prepared.

Christmas IS coming in nine days…and most of us will be ready – for Santa, celebrations, and packages under the tree.  But will we be ready for Jesus?  Will we have “bought enough oil, milk and bread” and made provisions to ensure that we are not left “standing out in the cold?”  Don’t you think it’s time we did?

Isaiah 25:1, 8-9
You, Lord, are my God!
    I will praise you
for doing the wonderful things
you had planned and promised
    since ancient times.

The Lord All-Powerful
will destroy the power of death
    and wipe away all tears.
No longer will his people
be insulted everywhere.
    The Lord has spoken!
At that time, people will say,
“The Lord has saved us!
    Let’s celebrate.
We waited and hoped—
    now our God is here.”
The powerful arm of the Lord
    will protect this mountain.

What a wonderful conversation I had this morning with 10 second and third graders…about heaven. Their ideas about what it will be like astounded me.  Many were “spot on” with scriptural descriptions of streets paved with gold and jewels.  Others talked about no tears or sadness...and one little girl said, “You won’t have to do anything, and that’s great – because I’m lazy!”  I shared my vision of the never-ending “heavenly table” and the feast we will have there…and they were duly impressed to think they could eat forever and never get full – or FAT!

We talked of how perfect heaven will be…and how blessed we are that God loves us enough to want us there with Him forever and ever!  Most of the children have lost a loved one in the last year - if not a family member, a close friend has passed.  It seemed like we all had at least one person near and dear to our hearts who is already sitting at the feet of Jesus and celebrating His amazing love and care, front and center!  We talked about how comforting that image is for us.

My goal this morning was to give the children a clear picture of how they can spend eternity in heaven with God and Jesus…and to give them hope about their eternal future.  I don’t think of heaven as a sad place at all…and apparently, neither do they!  And that’s a good thing!

So what about you?  Are you looking forward to your eternal home?  Are you doing what Jesus has commanded on this earth while He prepares a place for you at his heavenly table?  Have you surrendered your heart to Jesus and confessed your sins…and are you serving Him with every ounce of energy you can muster?

In the last four weeks, the children and I talked about angels, the devil, prayer, and heaven…and we used the Bible to answer a lot of questions about each of these topics.  We confirmed today that the devil is headed to hell…and we are doing all we can to spend eternity in Heaven. If seven- and eight-year-olds can do this, why can’t you?  Are you making every possible effort to secure that your eternal destination is heaven?  Have you thanked God for this amazing possibility and promise?  Isn’t it time you did?

2 Peter 3:11-13
Since everything here today might well be gone tomorrow, do you see how essential it is to live a holy life? Daily expect the Day of God, eager for its arrival. The galaxies will burn up and the elements melt down that day—but we’ll hardly notice. We’ll be looking the other way, ready for the promised new heavens and the promised new earth, all landscaped with righteousness.

Given all that has happened in our family in the last three months, Greg and I felt it was urgent that we “get our house in order.”  We updated our important documents, cleaned out files and closets…and we even pre-planned our funerals.  Several people thought this was rather morbid - and even “rushing things.”  But after the sudden deaths of Greg’s brother and my mother – both relatively young by our standards – we saw once again how quickly things can change.  As this scripture puts it, everything here might very well be gone tomorrow.

The “upside” of doing all of this preparation is that we can now move forward with confidence that things are in some semblance of order…that we are not leaving a mess for our friends and relatives – or burdening them unnecessarily with questions and decisions about how we would wish for things to be handled.

We can also focus on other things that are more enjoyable.  We can spend our days serving God and loving others…expectantly waiting for Him to show up and show out!  There will still be bumps in the road…and details to “tweak” from time to time…but now we are free to focus on our earthly mission – and our heavenly destination.  And both look pretty promising right at the moment.

I am reminded of the 4th grader who told me yesterday that he would not trade places with anyone, because, “My life is not perfect…there are problems…but it’s what I’ve been given, and it’s pretty great. I am happy with who I am and what I’ve got.”  I’m with him 100%.  I wish I had been that content when I was ten!  Yes, this is an amazing kid.  He has everything pretty well figured out...and I pray that this level of contentment and purpose continues in his life.

The thing is…we can be just like him!  We can find our purpose, “get our ducks in a row,” and serve God with determination, dedication – and great hope for our future in heaven!  What is required is often just a shift in attitude…and a determination to draw nearer to God and pay closer attention to His will for our lives.  There is no better time than this Holy Week to make such a commitment.  Won’t you join me in pledging to focus more on heaven and God’s plan for us until it is time for us to join Him there?  Will you redouble your efforts to keep your eyes and ears open…to worry less and serve God more…and to share the joy of this Eternal hope with others each and every day?  I’m ready to get started…what about you?

Psalm 37:23-25
The steps of good men are directed by the Lord. He delights in each step they take. If they fall, it isn’t fatal, for the Lord holds them with his hand.

I have been young and now I am old. And in all my years I have never seen the Lord forsake a man who loves him; nor have I seen the children of the godly go hungry.

It’s happened again…a demonstration of hatred and senseless violence against decent, innocent people – this time in Paris, France.  And this time, it’s personal for me, because the childhood friend of my mother – my best friend/neighbor’s older sister – is a resident of this European city, where she has resided for almost 40 years. When the attacks occurred, she was returning home via subway after going to a movie. She was doing what thousands were doing on a regular Friday night in a major city…enjoying herself and minding her own business.  Yet dozens just like her didn’t return home – and more than 100 of them never will.

So what are we to do?  Our church’s Bishop, Gary Mueller, wrote a poignant note today  for Facebook and suggested that the one thing we can do is to refuse operate in fear.  He said we must do this…”not because of our own strength - but because of God.”

I look at these words of the psalmist David in Psalm 37…surely he had seen his share of violence, death, and betrayal.  And yet, he said that he had never seen the Lord forsake a man who loves Him…nor had he seen the children of the godly go hungry.  David noted that God “holds them with His hand.”

Even today, as we see innocent blood spilled…lives turned upside down by this horrific tragedy and senseless act of hatred…we must grab hold of these words from the Psalms and cling to God’s promises. Even physical death cannot defeat those of us who truly love and trust God for everything.  I hope and pray that every single one of the victims of yesterday’s violence were immediately transported to Heaven and now sit in the presence of God Almighty. Yet I know that this may not be the case. I cannot control this…but I can do all that I am able to ensure that I meet Him there someday…and that I share the message of Christ’s love and care to every person I encounter in the meantime.

I am saddened for the families of these victims…and for my friend and all residents of Paris who are so heartsick today over what has happened in their city.  I understand that they are surely frightened for their own safety – and worried for their future.  But I am confident that God is still in control…that He is orchestrating order in this chaos…redemption in the rubble…and peace where we see pandemonium.

I am picturing God holding each of us by His powerful-yet-gentle hand.  And I am trusting Him to handle ALL of my worries and cares – today, and always.  What about you?

Hebrews 11:13-16
Each one of these people of faith died not yet having in hand what was promised, but still believing. How did they do it? They saw it way off in the distance, waved their greeting, and accepted the fact that they were transients in this world. People who live this way make it plain that they are looking for their true home. If they were homesick for the old country, they could have gone back any time they wanted. But they were after a far better country than that—heaven country. You can see why God is so proud of them, and has a City waiting for them.

A few weeks ago, a friend posted pictures on Facebook of a family member’s graduation.  This graduate was the grand-daughter of some dear friends of my Mam-ma Polly.  She considered this couple and their children to be “like family.”  I commented that Mam-ma would have loved the photos and seeing this beautiful young woman.  For a brief moment, I was sad that I couldn’t take my phone and share these images with her.  And this is one of many times I have thought, “I must tell Mam-ma”…or “Wouldn’t Daddy love to see the great-grandchildren do XYZ”…or “How I wish Greg’s dad had lived to see a particular change in our community.”

It seems like I frequently have experiences that I wish to share and/or enjoy with a loved one who is already in heaven.  And yet, I realize that there is not a single event that would be worthy of their return.  They would not come back to this earth for all of the celebrations and momentous occasions in the world…because Heaven is just that much better. I honestly believe this.

This scripture passage tells us that those who truly trust in God and believe in His promises don’t put a whole lot of stock in earthly events.  There are countless wonderful, exciting, exhilarating events in our lives…winning contests or receiving awards…graduations…first jobs…engagements…weddings…first homes…the birth of babies…and so many other milestones and special occasions. But none of these compares to what awaits us in Heaven…and I am 1000% confident that those who have already been received into Jesus’ arms would not even think of returning to earth for something they have “missed.”

You’ve probably heard people say that the more people they “lose,” the better Heaven looks…that they now have more loved ones in Heaven than they have on earth.  And I will admit that I look forward to Heaven a lot more now than I did a few decades ago before so many friends and family members passed.  But here’s the thing…God doesn’t want us to live in the land of “Woulda-Shoulda-Coulda.”  He doesn’t want us to put too much stock in the things of this world…but He also doesn’t want us to have regrets.

God wants us to live every single minute of each day with purpose…confident that we are hearing from Him and operating in His will.  He wants us to be busy doing what He has planned for us…accomplishing His goals and sharing the love, grace, mercy and forgiveness of Jesus Christ with everyone we encounter through our words and actions. When He gets ready for us to join Him in Heaven, He doesn’t want us to spend one second thinking, “But I haven’t seen this”…or “I haven’t done that!”  God wants our faith to be so strong and unwavering that we say, “If You’re ready for me, LORD…then I am ready to come Home to You!”

It takes a lot of faith to say this…and also to live with focus and intention in the days that we have been given on this earth.  Where do you stand?  Are you looking – and living – for your true Home?  Isn’t it about time you started doing exactly that?

Hebrews 11:3, 7
By faith, we see the world called into existence by God’s word, what we see created by what we don’t see.

By faith, Noah built a ship in the middle of dry land. He was warned about something he couldn’t see, and acted on what he was told. The result? His family was saved. His act of faith drew a sharp line between the evil of the unbelieving world and the rightness of the believing world. As a result, Noah became intimate with God.

A very tired Timothy had a tearful conversation with me as I drove the children home yesterday…about our cat Lucy – and heaven.  Timothy did not feel all that well – and he had not napped, so he was really tired.  But he started by asking about Lucy - and crying because she is gone…and where was Heaven, anyway?  Then he wanted to know what it would be like there…would we be hungry?  How many children does God have…and will we know anybody there?  It was all the convoluted (and somewhat melodramatic) thoughts of a weary child…but aren’t we all that way at times?!

Recently, I watched the movie
Evan Almighty, starring Steve Carell and Morgan Freeman.  This movie is a modern-day take on the story of Noah and the ark.  What it vividly brings home to us is the idea of just how crazy people would think we were if God spoke to us and told us to buy several acres of land and construct an ark…then animals started showing up in pairs to fill it!  We have a hard time imagining how insane this seemed in Noah’s day…but somehow seeing it in movie form today helps us to get a handle on the concept.  And it is indeed one that blows our minds!

Now I don’t think that God is ever going to tell us to build an ark in preparation for a 40-day flood.  But I am almost 100% certain that He will call on us to believe things…and do things…that have us asking, “Whaaaaa???” to use present-day vernacular!  And surely, we have questions…about Heaven in particular – and lots of earthly situations, as well!

The long-ago example of Noah demonstrates to us that faithfulness in a God we cannot see - and answering His call when the summons seems preposterous or impossible - will result in immeasurable rewards and blessings.  God is real…even though we cannot see Him.  Heaven is real…even though all we know of it is what we read in God’s Holy Word.  I assured Timothy that Heaven is beautiful…that Lucy is there sitting on God’s lap, and she is FINE - fed and so very happy!  And we will be happy there, too, when God sends for us.

But I also pointed out to Timothy that he has a lot of things to do here before he goes to heaven.  And so do you and I!  The time has come for us to get busy doing them!  Are you listening for God’s voice and following His lead?  Are you “playing Christian”…or are you truly hard at it serving God and representing Christ’s teachings to others?

Do you love others – even when it doesn’t make sense and/or you would like to strangle a few of them?  Do you bite your tongue and speak of God’s love when you would really rather give some folks a piece of your mind?  Are you accepting of ALL of God’s children, as Jesus commanded…or do you pick and choose which races, ethnicities, sexual orientations, political affiliations, religious beliefs, and socio-economic statuses you will include in your “circle of love and tolerance?”

Do you truly believe in an unseen God…and are you really ready to go “all in” and follow Him completely?  Will this be the day that you truly take that “leap of faith” and begin?  As much as I believe in God and the reality of Heaven, I believe that I will have to answer for how I trusted Him in this lifetime.  And you will have to do the same.  When we finally see God face-to-face, I believe that He will ask us about how faithful we were to Him…and our response will be important.  What will you have to say for yourself?  Are YOU intimate with God and listening for His voice?  Don’t you think you should be?

June 20 ~ Luke 17:28-30
“It was the same in the time of Lot—the people carrying on, having a good time, business as usual right up to the day Lot walked out of Sodom and a firestorm swept down and burned everything to a crisp. That’s how it will be—sudden, total—when the Son of Man is revealed."

Scripture quotations from The Message. © 1993, 1994, 1995, 1996, 2000, 2001, 2002 by Eugene Peterson.  Used by permission of NavPress, Colorado Springs, CO.  All rights reserved.

I have to admit…the massacre of nine people at the “Mother Emmanuel” A.M.E. church in Charleston, South Carolina last Wednesday evening has caused a major shift in my thinking…and not in the way you might think. I had grown comfortable – and complacent – in a particular area of my faith.  Sure, I love Jesus…and He is front and center (most of the time) in my thoughts and actions.  Yes, I am certain that Heaven will be my eternal home…that my name is written in the Lamb’s Book of Life…and that God is guiding my steps (though He may occasionally wring his hands and ask, “What on earth is she thinking?!”)

The much-needed “jolt” that this tragic event of June 17th provided for me is a reminder of 1) how precarious and temporary this life is, and 2) Who is really in control!  See, while I am ready for heaven in many ways, I realized that I have held subconscious thoughts that nothing will happen to me, because I still have work to do on this earth.  There are family members to nurture and care for…there are dozens of “important” projects to complete.  I have photos to scan and devos to write and children to drive to swim lessons and VBS… and so many more “important” things to accomplish!  But this week, I’ve very clearly felt God showing me that I am indeed important to Him…but I am not indispensible.  In other words, there is nothing about me that makes me more special than anyone else…more extraordinary…or more useful.

So when I saw a state senator and pastor swept to heaven in the middle of a sermon, I knew that the Son of Man can be revealed to any of us in a heartbeat. When I learned that a young man who just graduated from college has “graduated” to heaven…I realized that the plans we have cannot hold a candle to those of God.  When I heard about the seven other church members who nurtured a hate-filled, angry, malicious young man for more than an hour – and he shot them dead anyway…I realized that when God is ready for me, there won’t be a thing that I can do about it.  And more importantly - I won’t want to!

So I am looking at my life through a new lens…and I encourage you to do the same.  I am thinking more about every word and action…because they might be my last.  Did I offer kindness and a word from God to a would-be killer…or more likely, to someone so mired in depression or difficulties that he/she was facing a mental or emotional breakdown and considering suicide?  Did I waste time checking social media or watching a dumb reality TV show instead of playing with my little niece and nephews…doing something with my husband or other loved ones…or visiting someone who is sick, grieving or lonely?  Did I pay close enough attention to the people around me…both those I know and love – and those I’ve merely shared space with at the grocery check-out line, passed in a hallway at church, or swam next to at the community pool?

Have my comments on social media been kind and reflected God’s word and will?  Have I taken advantage of the minutes/hours/days/weeks/years that God has granted me on this earth?  Have I been like Lot…so busy carrying on and having a good time that I didn’t see the firestorm that was brewing…or recognize the presence of the Holy Spirit in my life?  If you and I were staring down the barrel of a gun as we attended a Bible study or prayer meeting – and given a moment to reflect before the trigger was pulled – what would we be the focal point of our last thoughts?

Are you ready for heaven?   Are you aware that the time of your departure is NOT your decision to make…and are you truly at peace with this?  We have seen this week that even the most faithful among us are not indispensible when God is ready for us to sit at Jesus’ feet.  When our perspective shifts and we change our attitude, we can start to really make the most of the time that we have left – and the blessings that God has given us.  I know I plan to…what about you?
