Luke 1:46-50
Mary said: With all my heart I praise the Lord, and I am glad because of God my Savior. He cares for me, his humble servant.

From now on, all people will say God has blessed me. God All-Powerful has done great things for me, and his name is holy. He always shows mercy to everyone who worships him.

Scripture taken from the Contemporary English Version © 1991,1992, 1995 by American Bible Society, Used by Permission.

I have quite the Christmas nativity collection, and I love to display it each year in our piano room.  A few years ago, I acquired several porcelain “Madonnas,” and I now proudly display those alongside the full nativity sets.  At first, I thought it was a little strange to add the Madonnas.  But I have to say, as I have studied scripture over the years and pondered the circumstances of Jesus’ “conception,” I have grown quite fascinated with Mary, the mother of Jesus.

In the first place, Mary was probably all of age 13 or 14 at best…and yet, she exhibited tremendous maturity – especially for a young girl who was “disgraced” with an unwed pregnancy.  The fact that she quickly recognized the importance of what God was placing on her – and humbly accepted it – astounds me.  Knowing that she might be ostracized by Joseph AND her entire family because of this…yet praising God for His “blessing”…is nothing short of incredible.

After studying other Biblical accounts of Mary and how she “mothered” Jesus, I have gained a newfound respect for her – and for her tremendous level of faith.  I ask myself sometimes, “Could you even come close to operating at this level, if you were presented with Mary’s circumstances?”  I simply don’t know if I would really have her fortitude and confidence.  I’d like to think so…but what this young woman was asked to do was truly extraordinary.

What God is asking us to do pales in comparison to what He asked of Mary.  Yet many of us are hesitant…full of excuses…and fearful.  We see the things that God asks us to do as burdens – not blessings.  We want to know “What’s in it for me?”  We are anything but ready to step up and out and say, “With all my heart, I praise the Lord” – and eagerly accept His assignments.

But we can take a page from Mary’s book. We can begin to trust God more - and change how we look at the things He asks of us. We can take on a more positive, worshipful, and grateful persona…and look for the blessings in the things that we are called to do…rather than the challenges and roadblocks.  We can trust God and fear less…and we can begin today.

Are you ready to emulate the Madonna?  Are you prepared to risk everything to gain even more?  Will this be the Christmas season that you begin to throw your fears to the wind and say, “It’s all in or nothing with God…and I’m ready to go all in!”?  Isn’t it time you made this level of commitment? If a teenage girl can do it, why can’t we?

December 8 ~ Deuteronomy 6:20-25
Someday your children will ask, “Why did the Lord give us these laws and teachings?”

Then you will answer:

We were slaves of the king of Egypt, but the Lord used his great power and set us free. We saw him perform miracles and make horrible things happen to the king, his officials, and everyone else. The Lord rescued us from Egypt, so he could bring us into this land, as he had promised our ancestors. That’s why the Lord our God demands that we obey his laws and worship him with fear and trembling. And if we do, he will protect us and help us be successful.

Scripture taken from the Contemporary English Version © 1991,1992, 1995 by American Bible Society, Used by Permission.

Our three-year-old Nathan’s favorite question is “Why?”  Sometimes, I have a good answer…and often, I just have to “wing it.”  But when our children – or anyone else – asks me why God gave us rules and commands us to obey them, I hope I have decent answers!  When I am asked by anyone WHY God covers us in grace and mercy and sent His only Son to suffer and die for our sins, I need to have a good explanation at the ready!

Let’s be clear…we are not going to have “all of the answers” – because we aren’t supposed to.  There are so many things about how God operates that are mysterious and will not be revealed to us until we get to Heaven. This is where “faith” comes into play! But we need to be so grounded and confident in our Christian faith and discipleship that we can explain - and demonstrate by our actions – our service and obedience in a way that is compelling and believable to others. And telling someone we love and serve God…“because I don’t want to go to hell” is not a good answer!

We have some excellent starting points outlined in this scripture passage from Deuteronomy 6. God performed miracles and protected His people by making horrible things happen to the king of Egypt and his cronies. He rescued the people of Israel and delivered them to the Promised Land.  And He has guaranteed protection and success for all who follow Him. Since this is Old Testament scripture, it doesn’t even touch on the miracles, love, grace and mercy of Jesus Christ several centuries later.  The Bible as a whole is filled with examples and justifications for placing our hope and faith in Jesus Christ and serving our Heavenly Father with full obedience and trust. Our job is to look for them and commit them to heart!

The point is that we need not fear questions about our faith.  Rather, we must be ready to answer them. We have to prepare ourselves through the study of God’s word, prayer and communication with Him – and through actually putting our Christian faith into action - so that we are ready to answer that all-important “Why?” from people who are “on the fence.”

Are you fully ready to tackle these questions head-on? Do you have good, plausible explanations for your Christian faith and discipleship?  Isn’t it time that you did?

2 Corinthians 6:16-18; 7:1
Who would think of setting up pagan idols in God’s holy Temple? But that is exactly what we are, each of us a temple in whom God lives. God himself put it this way:

“I’ll live in them, move into them;
I’ll be their God and they’ll be my people.
So leave the corruption and compromise;
leave it for good,” says God.
“Don’t link up with those who will pollute you.
I want you all for myself.
I’ll be a Father to you;
you’ll be sons and daughters to me.”
The Word of the Master, God.

With promises like this to pull us on, dear friends, let’s make a clean break with everything that defiles or distracts us, both within and without. Let’s make our entire lives fit and holy temples for the worship of God.

Last night when the 10:00 news came on, the reports started with the murder of a baby, followed by an account of a former swim coach who had molested children...and these were the “lead news stories” for our state! Greg flipped through the channels to something that was not a news program as I said to him, “THIS is why I have just about quit watching the news!”  And while you may feel that changing the channel represents me burying my head in the sand and pretending that these things don’t happen, this is not the case.

I am all for being informed.  I do pay attention to the news and current events.  But I think the ante has been “upped” between news outlets to see who can lead with the most heinous, disgusting and upsetting stories.  I know that abuses and tragedies occur every single day…but I don’t need a steady diet of the accounts of their every detail.  I know that in my own situation, the devil uses such things to dig at me and say… “See…this world is really, really bad!  If your God is so great and mighty, why are these awful things happening?”

I have said before that I don’t know “why bad things happen to good people.”  I do not ¬– and will probably never – understand why God allows human tragedies and atrocities. I cannot possibly comprehend His purposes – that is just beyond my finite human grasp. But I refuse to fill my heart and mind with such thoughts and allow fear to run rampant.  Instead, I am looking for accounts of ways that God is working in the lives of others.  I am more interested in hearing about an aide on my niece’s school bus who takes the children’s stuffed animals home to her “hospital” and repairs their holes and gives them new filling.

I’m more inclined to spend a half hour watching songbirds and squirrels feed outside our window than to sit and listen to reports of robberies, shootings and the latest sex scandal.  I am still working on choosing the 30-minute workout over 10 minutes spent devouring a leftover mini cheesecake from Thanksgiving dinner…but I know I am a flawed individual – and a forgiven sinner!  I have “unfriended” those who rile me up over divisive political and social issues…and I am working on letting unkind comments and criticisms roll off my back.

The more we focus on God and the beauty of a life in Christ, the easier it becomes to cleanse our hearts and minds of negativity and ugliness.  The more we dwell on the love of Jesus – both His love for us and ours for Him – the less time we have to listen to the whispers of Satan.  As we learn to operate with confidence and faith in God and His promises, we find that there is less room in our lives for fear and the crippling debilitation it brings to our lives.

As I focus more on God, I am better able to digest and process “the news” of the day.  I silently say a prayer for those who have been violated in some manner…for those who find themselves compelled to air their dirty laundry in the media…and for those who operate in hate and fear.  And then I ask God to fill me with thoughts of His love and care…to replace any angst with joy and peace…and to remind me that I am His temple – ready to be filled with His goodness.

The words of this passage are ringing in my ears…
”let’s make a clean break with everything that defiles or distracts us, both within and without.”  I’m more than ready to do this…aren’t you?

1 Peter 2:13-17
Make the Master proud of you by being good citizens. Respect the authorities, whatever their level; they are God’s emissaries for keeping order. It is God’s will that by doing good, you might cure the ignorance of the fools who think you’re a danger to society. Exercise your freedom by serving God, not by breaking the rules. Treat everyone you meet with dignity. Love your spiritual family. Revere God. Respect the government.

Earlier this week, I listened to a press conference held by our President, Barack Obama, when the French president, François Hollande, visited the United States.  President Obama talked about the terroristic acts committed in Paris a few weeks ago…and the upcoming summit of world leaders in this city where they will discuss climate change.  My gut instinct was to think, “Oh, NO!  They cannot all assemble there at once!”  And I admit…I have had this same reaction a few other times when I heard of a public appearance by our President and/or other world leaders - including when President Hollande recently walked the streets of Paris shortly after the heinous acts that were committed there.

But then I heard God say to me, “What do you fear?”  And surely, our own President and other leaders have noted that the greatest power these terrorists have is to make us fearful.  I began to think about fear…and how we as Christians so often operate in this mode.  We talk a good game…we say we trust God and believe in Him…and then we act in a way that demonstrates complete and utter fear and trepidation.

We are afraid of people who are different from us – in any way…color, creed, ethnic background, sexual orientation, socioeconomic level, or even just physical appearance.  We fear those who practice other religious beliefs.  We get a bad diagnosis, and we wring our hands and worry and stew over what will happen to us.

We are scared to death that someone will make us take down our nativity scene on public property or say “Happy Holidays” instead of “Merry Christmas” – and we act like the whole world will end if this happens!  This is not a message about the commercialization of our holiday seasons…because I’m right there with you that this has gotten out of hand.

But I have to ask…what are we demonstrating to others – especially those who do not believe in Jesus?  When we treat people with disrespect and set ourselves up on pedestals, what are we saying about the love of Jesus for all people?  When we claim salvation through Jesus Christ and declare that God can do ALL things…then we run and hide under the covers at the first sign of danger or difficulty, how does that reflect a faith and trust in God to heal, rescue and redeem us?

The words of this passage are so beautiful and true…
”Treat everyone you meet with dignity. Love your spiritual family. Revere God. Respect the government.” If we would only start to walk in these tenets and kick fear to the curb…imagine what might happen.  I’m more than willing to find out…are you?

Psalm 56:3-4
But when I am afraid, I will put my confidence in you. Yes, I will trust the promises of God. And since I am trusting him, what can mere man do to me?

The Living Bible copyright © 1971 by Tyndale House Foundation. Used by permission of Tyndale House Publishers Inc., Carol Stream, Illinois 60188. All rights reserved.

I’ve thought a lot over the last few days about how I would feel if I were one of those people lined up on the stage at the Bataclan concert hall in Paris and shot – or one of the people in the crowd who had to stand by and watch this unfold.  I’ve thought of the journalists who were forced to kneel and await their beheadings as terrorists created a video to share with the world…those who were in the schools, theaters and other public venues where mass shootings took place in recent years…and those who have heard a doctor say, “Medically, we’ve done all we can do for you.”

Would I be afraid?  Would I panic?  Would I want to scream and cry out, “NO!”…or would I even be able to speak?  Would my “life flash before my eyes” as some say?  Or would I slump my shoulders and raise my hands and say, “Here I am LORD…usher me Home.”

I cannot say for sure how I would react – none of us can.  And this passage seems to indicate that momentary fear is a normal, human reaction.  But what follows makes all the difference…”when I am afraid, I will put my confidence in You.”  I love the question the Psalmist asks as a trusting believer – “What can mere man do to me?”…because it speaks directly to our Christian faith.  If we believe God when He promises to take care of us and meet all of our needs…how can we fear the words and actions of man – or even the devil?  If the outstretched arms of Jesus wait to enfold us in Heaven, how can we fear going there?  If we have been called to be Disciples and share the love of Christ with ALL people, how can we fear loving and nurturing people of all races, creeds, colors, ethnic groups, sexual orientations, and religious beliefs?

This is not about being naïve or throwing caution to the wind.  It’s about refusing to let the devil win by filling us with fear and worry.  My goodness…all I have to do is look at all that God has carried me through to see how crucial it is that I trust Him in all things!  His ways have ALWAYS been better than mine…His love and protection have ALWAYS been stronger and more powerful than any human’s.  And I know beyond a shadow of a doubt that He is not dropping His guard now!

Every single one of us has opportunities to be fearful and worrisome…but we also have a God who says, “I’ve got this!”  Isn’t it time we started believing Him?  Isn’t it time we started to do all we can to honor God’s commitment to us by committing to trust Him in return?  Will this be the day that you raise your hands toward Heaven and say, “I will put my confidence in You”…then live like you mean it?

Psalm 48:9-14
Our God, here in your temple
    we think about your love.
You are famous and praised
    everywhere on earth,
    as you win victories
    with your powerful arm.
Mount Zion will celebrate,
and all Judah will be glad,
    because you bring justice.
Let’s walk around Zion
    and count its towers.
We will see its strong walls
    and visit each fortress.
Then you can say
    to future generations,
“Our God is like this forever
    and will always guide us.”

Scripture taken from the Contemporary English Version © 1991,1992, 1995 by American Bible Society, Used by Permission.

This morning as I prepared to write this devotional, I must admit that I was conflicted.  The world seems turned upside down…senseless terrorism and murder in Paris…displaced and orphaned people by the thousands in the Middle East…people closing their hearts and their “borders” to those who have nowhere to turn…illness and disease…those who are aging and declining – and there is nothing to do but watch it happen…humans in every corner of the world are suffering and troubled…orphans abound in our own back yard, where there are 2 beds for every three children in need.  And on top of it all, the weathermen are continually warning that a strong system is approaching with high winds and potentially flooding rains.  The list seems unending.

Then I opened my Bible to Psalm 48:9-14 and read these words about the love and power of God Almighty.  And I was humbled…and renewed…and encouraged.

  • We don’t know what to do with all of the senseless violence and hatred in this world.  “Our God is like this forever and will always guide us.”
  • We are fearful of helping those we do not know and trust.  We are powerless to control the weather.  Honestly, we are just a little afraid of virtually everything!  ”…You win victories with Your powerful arm.”
  • We feel helpless to meet the needs of orphans, the elderly, those who are sick and suffering, the grieving, and those who are homeless and in need.  “We will see its [Zion’s] strong walls and visit each fortress…we think about Your love.”
  • We are weary and do not know how to keep going.  Our faith and confidence have wavered in light of all that is happening, and we cannot see how things will ever improve.  “…all Judah will be glad, because You bring justice.”

It’s easy to get caught up in the worry, frustration and grief of current events.  We go from faith-filled prayer warriors to spineless wimps afraid of our own shadows in the blink of an eye!  And we should all be ashamed.  Where is our confidence in God?  Where is our affirmation that these claims in Psalm 48 about His power and strength are absolute and indisputable?  Are we telling our next generations the truth…or selling them a bill of goods?  Because if we do not truly believe – and internalize – what the Bible tells us about God, we really are failing as Christian witnesses and Disciples.

This is the day to “hitch up your britches”…to “pull yourself up by the bootstraps”…to rise up out of your “funk” and get it together in response to God’s call.  It’s time to truly honor our gift of Salvation through Jesus Christ by modeling His teachings and affirming that God is everything the scriptures tell us He is.  More importantly, it is time for us to live out what God has demonstrated over and again – in our lives and throughout history…to walk and breathe in the truth of His victories and His power, and to validate this to the world at large.

Worry, fear, and a closed heart have no place in the lives of faith-filled Christians.  Today is the day to kick these attitudes to the curb, once and for all, and live out God’s truths.  Will you stand with me and make this a day of great renewal?  Are you really ready to represent our mighty God?  Isn’t it time you were?

Psalm 37:23-25
The steps of good men are directed by the Lord. He delights in each step they take. If they fall, it isn’t fatal, for the Lord holds them with his hand.

I have been young and now I am old. And in all my years I have never seen the Lord forsake a man who loves him; nor have I seen the children of the godly go hungry.

The Living Bible copyright © 1971 by Tyndale House Foundation. Used by permission of Tyndale House Publishers Inc., Carol Stream, Illinois 60188. All rights reserved.

It’s happened again…a demonstration of hatred and senseless violence against decent, innocent people – this time in Paris, France.  And this time, it’s personal for me, because the childhood friend of my mother – my best friend/neighbor’s older sister – is a resident of this European city, where she has resided for almost 40 years. When the attacks occurred, she was returning home via subway after going to a movie. She was doing what thousands were doing on a regular Friday night in a major city…enjoying herself and minding her own business.  Yet dozens just like her didn’t return home – and more than 100 of them never will.

So what are we to do?  Our church’s Bishop, Gary Mueller, wrote a poignant note today  for Facebook and suggested that the one thing we can do is to refuse operate in fear.  He said we must do this…”not because of our own strength - but because of God.”

I look at these words of the psalmist David in Psalm 37…surely he had seen his share of violence, death, and betrayal.  And yet, he said that he had never seen the Lord forsake a man who loves Him…nor had he seen the children of the godly go hungry.  David noted that God “holds them with His hand.”

Even today, as we see innocent blood spilled…lives turned upside down by this horrific tragedy and senseless act of hatred…we must grab hold of these words from the Psalms and cling to God’s promises. Even physical death cannot defeat those of us who truly love and trust God for everything.  I hope and pray that every single one of the victims of yesterday’s violence were immediately transported to Heaven and now sit in the presence of God Almighty. Yet I know that this may not be the case. I cannot control this…but I can do all that I am able to ensure that I meet Him there someday…and that I share the message of Christ’s love and care to every person I encounter in the meantime.

I am saddened for the families of these victims…and for my friend and all residents of Paris who are so heartsick today over what has happened in their city.  I understand that they are surely frightened for their own safety – and worried for their future.  But I am confident that God is still in control…that He is orchestrating order in this chaos…redemption in the rubble…and peace where we see pandemonium.

I am picturing God holding each of us by His powerful-yet-gentle hand.  And I am trusting Him to handle ALL of my worries and cares – today, and always.  What about you?

James 1:5-8
If you don’t know what you’re doing, pray to the Father. He loves to help. You’ll get his help, and won’t be condescended to when you ask for it. Ask boldly, believingly, without a second thought. People who “worry their prayers” are like wind-whipped waves. Don’t think you’re going to get anything from the Master that way, adrift at sea, keeping all your options open.

“Honey, it’s going to be okay.” Those were the words that Vice President Joe Biden shared with the world this morning as he made an announcement not to make a run for President in the 2016 campaign.  Biden explained that as a child, when his family experienced tough times, his parents would always tell him, “Honey, it’s going to be okay.”  He added…”and they meant it!”  He made the point that we must believe this…we must work to take our country in a direction that allows us to be able to look our kids in the eye and say with certitude…”It’s going to be okay” – and mean it!

This is true for us as Christians, also.  We have to be so grounded in our faith in God that we can say with certainty, “This is going to be okay”…and truly mean those words.  We must do the things that strengthen us in our faith…we must study God’s word and spend time talking to Him – and listening to His words for us.  We must reflect on the examples that are all around us of how God has prevailed…the demonstrations of healing and restoration…how He has made a way where none seemed possible.  And we must take comfort and courage in these examples.

With God in charge of our every breath, we must look to the future with confidence and courage…and the mantra that “Honey, it’s going to be okay.” On any given day, things can arise that make this truly difficult…I get that!  But this is when we need to abide in this thought and phrase the most!  We cannot “worry our prayers” or wring our hands and toss our fears and frustrations around like wind-whipped waves.  We must let go of them and give them to God Almighty, once and for all.

“Honey, it’s going to be okay.” With God in control, I am certain of this.  What about you?

1 Peter 5:6-7
If you will humble yourselves under the mighty hand of God, in his good time he will lift you up.

Let him have all your worries and cares, for he is always thinking about you and watching everything that concerns you.

This morning, my mother began chemotherapy treatments for what is suspected to be ovarian cancer.  More tests are necessary to be certain of the origin…but there is no question that she is battling “the beast.”  As Mom said to someone in a Facebook response, the medical staff will virtually be pumping poison into her body to kill the cancer…and there can’t help but be side effects and the potential for negative ramifications.

My mother is one of the most faith-filled people I know.  She would not allow anyone except her husband to accompany her this morning, so I have waited at home – and prayed - for the “report.”  I envisioned my mother walking bravely into the outpatient wing of our local hospital this morning, like countless patients before her.  She is facing headlong whatever lies ahead…and she has told us over and over, “No matter what…it will be okay.  God is in control.”

But this is happening to my mother.  As much as I love and care for my friends and other family members who have experienced cancer, other illnesses, injuries and challenges…this is very real and personal for me now.  And I will be honest…I’ve been a little more than worried.  I know all of the things that God promises…and that my mother has taught me.  I’ve experienced God’s unfailing love and care…His perfect timing…His mighty hand and loving attention to every detail.  But I am human, so of course, I have done a little hand-wringing.

Does this make me weak and less of a Christian?  I don’t think so. And when you worry, it doesn’t necessarily diminish your faith, either.  Now, we must not hang out too long in the “Land of Worries and Fears,” but I believe that God can actually use a little side-trip there to strengthen us in our faith.  He understands our humanity…our penchant to “go there.”  And I believe that He is calling to us…saying, “Hey, YOU!  Look over here! I’m more than ready and able to take care of this for you.  All you have to do is turn around and come back over here next to me!”  And that is what I am going to do.

I’ve had my momentary panic attack…I’ve expressed my fears and worries to God…and now I am going to let Him have them.  I know that whatever He does with them will be perfect…that He truly is holding my mother – and all of us – in the palm of His hand.  I am confident that He has sent angels to surround us and attend to our every need.  And I KNOW that He is doing this for you, as well.

Won’t you let go and let God have your worries and fears today? Are you ready to turn around and run straight into His arms and experience His amazing love and care?  Do you truly understand that with God, everything will be okay – no matter what happens?  Isn’t it time to quit wringing our hands and fold them together in a prayer of trust?  Will this be the moment that you turn around and run back to God and let Him handle the heavy stuff? Don’t you think it should be?

Joel 2:28-32
“After I have poured out my rains again, I will pour out my Spirit upon all of you! Your sons and daughters will prophesy; your old men will dream dreams, and your young men see visions. And I will pour out my Spirit even on your slaves, men and women alike, and put strange symbols in the earth and sky—blood and fire and pillars of smoke.

“The sun will be turned into darkness and the moon to blood before the great and terrible Day of the Lord shall come.

“Everyone who calls upon the name of the Lord will be saved; even in Jerusalem some will escape, just as the Lord has promised, for he has chosen some to survive.

Have you heard about the “Blood Moons?”  According to information found at EarthSky.org…” The first Blood Moon eclipse in a series of four happened on the night of April 14-15, 2014. The second one took place on the night of October 7-8, 2014. The third one is coming up on April 4, 2015 and will be visible to North American skywatchers. A series of four total lunar eclipses is called a tetrad. We in astronomy had not heard the term Blood Moon used in quite this way before this year, but now the term has become widespread in the media.”*

Another lunar eclipse is scheduled to occur on September 28, 2015. There are pastors and others in the religious community who cite Joel 2:31 – and the rest of this passage – and try to make a correlation between these events and the Second Coming of Christ.  Books have been written…seminars have been held and attended…and a general state of unrest has been stirred among some believers.

I do not mean to belittle anyone’s faith.  But here is my “take” on all of this.  The “blood moons” (a phrase coined by one of those “religious” authors) are beautiful.  If you get a chance to observe one, by all means, do so! But do not panic.  If Jesus is just about ready to return, so what?  This is GREAT NEWS!  As I told a neighbor who wanted to talk to me about “End Times” recently…”Bring ‘em!  I don’t plan on being here!”

See, I’ve already been “bought and paid for” by the blood of Jesus.  I surrendered my heart to Him a long time ago, and whenever He is ready for me, I’m ready to go to heaven.  This could happen in the next 30 minutes…or I could still be here when He returns for His church at large.  Either way, I know that this is not my final destination, but just an important stop along the way.  I have work to do on behalf of my Lord and Savior…and He is going to provide me with signs, wonders, dreams, visions, and beautiful phenomena like “blood moons” to enjoy during the journey.

I don’t have an “exclusive” on salvation.  What God has done for me through Jesus Christ…He will gladly do for you.  No one needs operate in fear for even one minute.  This is glorious…amazing…exciting!  Embrace it…embrace Jesus!  And revel in the promise that you will LIVE with Him for all eternity…whenever He decides to call for you!

And let’s stop scaring folks about the “End Times”.  Let’s talk about how wonderful heaven is…how blessed we are to serve a Risen Savior…and how glorious it will be to belong to Him for all eternity.  We Christians have operated in fear long enough…and it’s not working for us OR those we wish to reach for Jesus!  Let’s start showing others how joyful and excited we are to be children of the Most High God…and demonstrate happy anticipation of all that He has in store for us!

April 26 ~ Psalms 91:1-6
We live within the shadow of the Almighty, sheltered by the God who is above all gods.

This I declare, that he alone is my refuge, my place of safety; he is my God, and I am trusting him. For he rescues you from every trap and protects you from the fatal plague. He will shield you with his wings! They will shelter you. His faithful promises are your armor. Now you don’t need to be afraid of the dark anymore, nor fear the dangers of the day; nor dread the plagues of darkness, nor disasters in the morning.

Scripture taken from the Contemporary English Version © 1991,1992, 1995 by American Bible Society, Used by Permission.

I still remember the day that I marched into my principal’s office and said, “I will not be back as a teacher next year.”  Talk about a scary moment!  I knew that this was right for me…but after 9 years in the classroom, I was also nervous and frightened about admitting – to myself and others – that I needed to go in another direction.  I remember the day I gave notice in another job that I had held for more than three years. Again, I knew it was the right thing to do, but saying those words was not easy.  I remember the day I messaged all of the members of my church’s Praise Team and told them that I had just spent my last Sunday helping to lead worship.  I knew that God was moving me…but after eight years of serving in this capacity, the finality of saying, “I’m done” was daunting, to say the least.

Every day, people do courageous things.  Some take brave steps, like uttering the phrase, “My name is XYZ, and I am an alcoholic.”  Or perhaps they tell their friends and family members that they are gay.  Maybe someone in an abusive relationship says, “Enough!” and contacts authorities or a shelter and pursues physical safety and support.  Maybe you have admitted to someone that you are in over your head financially and need help figuring out what to do next. Or perhaps you have admitted that your marriage or relationship is not working…and something has to change.

Maybe you have told your parents that you are flunking out of school – or that you don’t want to return to college next year.  Or maybe you told your coach or band director - or another group sponsor - that you are quitting the team/band/club.

This scripture passage is particularly important for each of us, because at one point or another, we will all face something that scares the pants off us.  It may be one of the things I mentioned.  Or it may be another personal crisis – like losing a loved one, physical illness or injury…or even facing your own mortality.  We’ve all been in a situation where our heart raced and pounded and we dreaded the day or night and whatever it might bring.

But no more!  We must remind ourselves that we do indeed stand within the shadow of the Almighty, sheltered by the God who is above all gods. We must remember that He alone is our refuge, our place of safety; He is our God, and we must trust Him. We must feel the shelter of His wings and seek refuge there.

When fears come – and they will – we must call on God to help us…and fully believe that He will do just that.  Whatever you are facing today…whatever fears are troubling you…give them to God. Let the armor of His loving arms embrace and embolden you with courage and peace.  Put one foot in front of the other, and keep on going.  God’s got this…you have nothing to fear!

Proverbs 3:5-6
With all your heart
you must trust the Lord
    and not your own judgment.
Always let him lead you,
and he will clear the road
    for you to follow.

Scripture taken from the Contemporary English Version © 1991,1992, 1995 by American Bible Society, Used by Permission.

Get ready to wave your hands in the air and say, “Noo-noo, Noo-noo!” (“Twilight Zone” theme song reference, for those of you of a certain age!). I went to bed last night praying for protection and care for several of our family members who are traveling.  I have to admit…the devil tried to fill my heart and mind with trepidation and fear.  I was awakened more than once in the night with this thought…”Trust in the LORD with all your heart…and lean not on your own understanding.” – Proverbs 3:5. I also was given the first verses of Psalm 121…“I look to the hills! Where will I find help? It will come from the Lord, who created the heavens and the earth.”

I woke up with these verses playing like a loop in my head.  And while you may think, “She must not have gotten a wink of sleep!”… I have to tell you, I slept very well!  What does this tell me?  That God is 100%...totally…in control.  He is with me, for me…even while I sleep.  God never leaves me…and He never will.  I have comfort today - for myself and for my loved ones. When I opened the outline I had prepared for this series of devotionals and discovered what was “on tap” as a scripture reference for today, I simply had to laugh out loud!  If this isn’t a sign that God is on top of the situation, I don’t know what would be!

Dozens of people I know and love are traveling because it is Spring Break.  They are having fun, spending time together as families, and making memories.  And God is watching over each of them.  I thank Him daily for this care and protection…and I know that He hears not only my prayers of praise, but also my “gentle-reminder petitions” on behalf of them.  He hears my prayers – and answers perfectly…and I am learning to fully rest in this.

With all my heart, I trust the LORD.  I learned the hard way what a waste of energy it is to doubt…to wring my hands and worry…to ask God to handle certain situations – and then pick them right back up and try to “massage” them myself!  I’m done with that.  I’m all in…believing that He is in complete control.  I still present my cares and concerns to him each day…but I fully trust Him to handle them without my interference.  I look to the hills for God’s help…and then I trust in God and His judgment.  What about you?

Habakkuk 1:12-13
God, you’re from eternity, aren’t you? Holy God, we aren’t going to die, are we? God, you chose Babylonians for your judgment work? Rock-Solid God, you gave them the job of discipline? But you can’t be serious! You can’t condone evil! So why don’t you do something about this? Why are you silent now? This outrage! Evil men swallow up the righteous and you stand around and watch!

Scripture quotations from The Message. © 1993, 1994, 1995, 1996, 2000, 2001, 2002 by Eugene Peterson.  Used by permission of NavPress, Colorado Springs, CO.  All rights reserved.

If ever there were a scripture passage that seemed timely, this is it.  I listened to the latest “worldwide caution” issued by the State Department earlier today…as well as warnings from several “experts” on terrorism who say we should all be expecting an attack at some point…that there will be more confrontations and acts of violence committed against innocent people...that we need to be careful, and stay alert for anything amiss.

Does this mean we should adopt an attitude of fear and suspicion of every person or situation we encounter that seems a little “off” or different?  I don’t think so.  These alerts are not meant to make us leery of anyone who doesn’t look like us – or worship as we do.  It is not a license to discriminate and operate in rigidity and intolerance toward any person or group – all in the name of “safety”.

The bigger question many may be asking is, “Why, God…WHY?”  Many may be wondering why God is allowing evil men to do evil things…and to hurt innocent people in the bargain.  It’s a logical question…and the answer is not that this fulfills some Biblical prophecy!  Please…let’s NOT go THERE!

I believe that God wants us pay careful attention to the details of our lives.  I don’t think that He intends for us to deliberately put ourselves in harmful situations.  Yet, some of us do this by the very words we use when posting social media comments and talking amongst our “friends” about other people - using derogatory terms and suggesting that those who are not like us in some manner should all be locked up, tortured, or even killed.

God calls us to mind our words and our actions.  Should we encounter an evil situation, this will be our “Daniel moment"…our opportunity to stand up for what we believe – and for WHOM we serve.  If we are injured or killed in the process, the “bad guys” have not truly won.

We need to get a grip…to put this into perspective…to pray for the families and friends of those slain in Paris - and around the world – by the evil factions who wish to do us harm.  And we need to prepare in the most important way – by making sure that we have a right relationship with Jesus Christ…that we are ready to meet Him face-to-face at a moment’s notice.

God will deal with evil – in His time and in His manner.  This is not our worry.  His heart breaks over their deeds, and He will attend to their punishment in due time.  Meanwhile, we believers in Jesus Christ truly are safe…in His powerful and loving arms.  Nothing and no one can harm us there.  And this should be our primary focus. Are you truly prepared in the way that matters most?  Isn’t it time you were?

2 Thessalonians 2:1-3
When our Lord Jesus returns, we will be gathered up to meet him. So I ask you, my friends, not to be easily upset or disturbed by people who claim that the Lord has already come. They may say that they heard this directly from the Holy Spirit, or from someone else, or even that they read it in one of our letters. But don’t be fooled! People will rebel against God. Then before the Lord returns, the wicked one who is doomed to be destroyed will appear.

In late 2014, the movie Left Behind* debuted.  The movie stars Nicholas Cage as Rayford Steele, an airline pilot who discovers that the Rapture has come while he was in flight - and he was “left behind”, along with his daughter and countless others.  In the blink of an eye, Steele’s wife and son – both born-again Christians - were carried to heaven with others who professed a belief in Jesus Christ.  We’ve not seen the movie yet…but we did read all of the books in the “Left Behind” series…and I assume that the film depicts the chaos that ensues as people try to cope with what happens after millions of people suddenly vanish into thin air.

I enjoyed reading the “Left Behind” series, written by Jerry Jenkins and Tim LaHaye.  I found the story to be an interesting “take” on the Book of Revelation and what could happen when things are put into motion for the Second Coming of Christ.  I know several people who devote a lot of time to studying “end times” and Bible prophecy.  They put a lot of stock in signs and symbols…and turn things like beautiful “blood moons” into a warning that “Doomsday” is upon us!

Again, I do not discount the prophecy of the Bible – nor do I condemn those who express such an interest in these things.  At the same time, I do not operate in fear and worry over when Jesus will return…and what this “sign” or that means.  I would rather enjoy the beautiful red moon rises that God gives us than worry about whether they signal “the beginning of the End!”  In the words of the Apostle Paul…I am content to go or stay.

Sadly, a lot of Christians have become more concerned with worrying about “end times” than in living for Jesus now!  If you know where you are headed…and Who you serve…your interest in the “Doomsday” message should be limited to a mere passing glance. This doesn’t mean that we should argue with those who worry.  But since we don’t plan on being “left behind”…we needn’t be bothered by their talk.  Focus on demonstrating your faith and confidence in Jesus…enjoy reading this series of books if you wish – and seeing the movie…and serve as a walking example of the Light of Christ.

In Psalm 16:11, we read…”You have shown me the path to life, and you make me glad by being near to me. Sitting at your right side, I will always be joyful.”  It’s time we stopped worrying about the future and started living in the nearness of Jesus.  He is HERE…He is by our side.  Let’s serve him with a joyful and peaceful heart this year.  Let’s make this the year that worry and fear are “left behind”.

Matthew 2:1-4
After Jesus was born in Bethlehem village, Judah territory— this was during Herod’s kingship—a band of scholars arrived in Jerusalem from the East. They asked around, “Where can we find and pay homage to the newborn King of the Jews? We observed a star in the eastern sky that signaled his birth. We’re on pilgrimage to worship him.”

When word of their inquiry got to Herod, he was terrified—and not Herod alone, but most of Jerusalem as well. Herod lost no time. He gathered all the high priests and religion scholars in the city together and asked, “Where is the Messiah supposed to be born?”

Greg and I watched a sitcom recently in which a teenager found himself caught in a lie.  His older sister convinced him that the best way to get out of it was to tell even BIGGER lies until people began to buy into the story and believe them to be truthful.  Of course, this ultimately backfired, and the boy had to “come clean” about what had really happened.

Every single one of us has heard some news that had us scrambling to find out the details…to ask around and “get the skinny” on what was really going to happen.  At the heart of the matter, we wanted to know what effect it would have on our own lives.  Would this be good news for us…or bad news?  When things are rocking along pretty well in our world, we don’t like to think about a change…especially one that might cause us some trouble!

Hopefully, such news has never left us terrified…at least not for the same reasons as Herod! Most assuredly, let’s hope that we never believe that the way to correct misinformation is with more untruths.  At the heart of the matter, Herod was operating in fear and pride.  His ego would not allow him to consider another king…not even one sent from God.  So when he heard news that the Messiah had been born, all he could think about was figuring out a way to find Him and kill Him – or to convince his soldiers to do this!  Now that’s some fear and pride at work!

I would hope that none of us plots evil things to cover our own sins – or to deal with our fears and the things that we believe will disrupt life as we know it!  But just in case, let me leave you with this thought.  Jesus is the light of the world.  He tells us in John 10:10 that “I came so they can have real and eternal life, more and better life than they ever dreamed of.”  There is nothing to fear about Jesus! With Him, ALL things are possible.

When a sense of fear or dread comes upon you, remember the Good News of Jesus Christ.  Say a prayer and ask Him to help you squarely face whatever is in your path…and to give you wisdom and faith as you follow His lead. Like Herod and the “scholars”, we have two paths from which to choose.  Make the right decision…follow Jesus, the King of Kings!  Worship Him and walk in His ways, and you’ll never have to worry about the outcome.

Psalm 41:1-3
You, Lord God, bless everyone
    who cares for the poor,
    and you rescue those people
    in times of trouble.
You protect them
    and keep them alive.
You make them happy here
    in this land,
and you don’t hand them over
    to their enemies.
You always heal them
    and restore their strength
    when they are sick.

An acquaintance recently posted a link to a video that I was gullible enough to watch.  The speaker was talking about how (IN HIS OPINION, NOT MINE!) we Christians are being overtaken by evil forces at every turn, and this is resulting in terrible things happening in our world. The "kicker" to his ridiculous rant came in the closing sentence, when he said something about how "they" (the "evil ones") will even "take our money and our cars!" And this man was supposedly some sort of pastor!

C'mon now!  You know this isn't right!  Yet I see it played out all the time as I shop at our local Wal-Mart and thrift store and interact with others around town. Since we live in a fairly small community, I know a lot of people...many who would "swear on a stack of Bibles" that they are faith-filled Christians.  Some of these same people practice what I call "Country Club Religion"...and a whole lotta folks are not members of the "Club".  And boy, do they know it!  They know by the way they are smiled at with pity or disdain...or the way they are not included in table discussions at school or a local church circle.  They know where they "fit" (or don't), because a lot of us "Christians" are quite open about how we feel toward those who are not like us in some way...race or skin color, ethnicity, lifestyle, socio-economic level, education level - even which church someone attends - and so much more.

It starts early.  I am seeing the "cliques" develop even among Timothy, Zola and Nathan's age groups and how certain children are treated one way or another.  If you read the rest of Psalm 41, you will see that David addresses this.  He talks to God about people who come to see him when he is sick and pretend to care...then go out and gossip about him in the community.  He notes that even his best friend did this...he told others that David had some sort of deadly disease - and that they should stay away from him.

Isn't that what we often do?  We tell others, "Well, he/she is _______."  You can fill in the blank.  We do it with everyone from the person who sits next to us in class or at church all the way to our President and world leaders.  We protect our "stuff" and our "position" at all costs - even at the expense of another of God's children.  And we expect God to pat us on the head and tell us that this is all okay.

Well, it's not alright!  And as David tells God in verse 12..."You have helped me because I am innocent, and You will always be close to my side."  A lot of people are "sick and suffering" because of mistreatment by "Christians".  Many have decided that God must not love them...because in so many ways, they have been told this repeatedly by people who claim to know Jesus and to follow Him, while they deride and judge others - and sometimes not all that subtly.

Here's a news flash...God loves the "poor" - those who are physically in need, and those who are poor in spirit.  He cares about those who are sick in the body, sick at heart, and just plain sick and tired.  He cares about them just as much as the next person, and His deepest desire is to heal them and to bring joy, peace and salvation into their lives.  I serve a God of abundant, profound, all-encompassing love, grace, mercy and forgiveness.  He could care less what I wear, what kind of car I drive, or whether I just got the latest version of the newest smart phone!  Moreover, He knows what race I am...the color of my skin...my sexual orientation...and my very DNA - because HE MADE ME!  And you know what?  HE LOVES ME JUST LIKE THIS!

If I sound upset or angry, I’m not – I'm just disheartened.  I am so tired of hearing about "Christian values" and what is wrong with our world, when what is really wrong is that we have failed to hear God's voice and meet the needs of ALL of His people...RIGHT WHERE THEY ARE!  I'm sorry if this upsets you, but the "Christian Country Club" needs to GO!  We need to pull out our Bibles, spend some serious time in study and prayer, and figure out what God is calling us to do...then get busy doing it!

You have a choice...you can be one of those "friends" who visits the sick - or smiles at your neighbor - and talks about them later.  Or you can fall to your knees and ask God to show you how, when and where to serve Him...unconditionally.  You can ask God to show you where and how to minister in His name to the "sick" and the poor...and to guard your heart and mind from judging another living soul in the process.  You can serve as a catalyst for healing, joy, restoration and salvation. Or you can sit home and worry about your car and your "stuff".  The choice is totally yours.  What do you think God would want you to do?

Psalm 91:9-10
For Jehovah is my refuge! I choose the God above all gods to shelter me.  How then can evil overtake me or any plague come near?

If it weren't so pitiful, it would almost be funny how people have reacted to the recent news about the appearance of the ebola virus in our country.  When the deadly illness first struck people in Dallas, Texas, I had Facebook "friends" who actually said, "Omigosh!  That's only 6 hours away from here!"  Helloooooo!  You're not going to get it over the Internet!

Fear is one of the devil's biggest weapons.  If he can just make us fear something...if he can confuse us and cause us not to understand, investigate, and/or get all of the facts...he can really mess with our minds and our hearts.  And many of us seem to "go there" with warp speed!

In this scripture passage, we are reminded that God is our refuge...our shelter...the "soft (and safe) place to fall".  When we are securely grounded in Him...when we are firmly entrenched in the clutches of His hand, what can really harm us?

Does this mean that we will never get sick...that nothing "bad" will ever happen to us?  NO!  But one of the keys to this passage is the word overtake.  Nothing can overtake us when God is in control.  When we are safely sheltered in His arms, we can face any challenge...we can battle any illness, or injury...we can work our way through grief and loss - and find a place of recovery and restoration.  When God is our refuge, "plagues" may come dangerously close...but we will never be overcome by them.

I am participating in a six-week Bible study with a wonderful group of ladies.  One night, the facilitator asked us what was keeping us from discovering our "Best Yes"...from doing what we know that God is calling us to do - and finding a million excuses for doing anything and everything else.  What is really holding us back?  And the answer we collectively agreed upon was...fear...fear of the unknown...fear of what might (or might not) happen...fear of rejection and ridicule...fear of failure.  And we had to agree that for those who truly believe in the shelter and refuge of God Almighty, fear is totally ludicrous!

So I guess my question for us today is this...are we really dwelling in the shelter and refuge of God?  Or have we stepped away and given the devil a chance to latch hold of us?  God's arms are open...He is waiting to offer us safety and protection.  In His grip, nothing can overtake us.  So where will you choose to reside?

Mark 16:17-18
“And those who believe shall use my authority to cast out demons, and they shall speak new languages. They will be able even to handle snakes with safety, and if they drink anything poisonous, it won’t hurt them; and they will be able to place their hands on the sick and heal them.”

It seems that much of the world is presently in a tizzy over the Ebola virus. And yes, those who are directly involved with people who have come in contact with this potentially deadly illness – or who have been to countries where the sickness is prevalent – should be cautious and concerned.  But those of us who live hours and days away from this contagion truly have little to nothing to fear. Moreover, we should be thankful that there are medical personnel who are specifically trained to treat those with this virus, which will help to contain it and prevent further spread, while aiding those who are infected.

Here’s how I see this...Jesus told us over and again in Scripture that He came to earth, suffered, bled and died, so that we might live!  Through His sacrifices, God has granted us not only the assurance of safety and security, but also the wisdom to know how to survive!  So when this passage talks of “handling snakes” and “drinking poison”...don’t take this so literally.  The “snakes and poisons” of life are all around us – physical dangers, relationship difficulties, temptations, challenges, sins of all kinds – and yes, deadly viruses.  But we have the ultimate “Hazmat Suit” of all...the healing power Jesus Christ!

Because of Jesus’s healing power, we don’t have to operate in fear...about anything.  And honestly, when you boil this all down...that’s what is happening. “Fearmongering” is at an all-time high these days...in current events, politics, and even the latest “health news”.  Just watch
The Dr. Oz Show, and you will feel like you have failed your own body in more than a dozen ways with each episode!

We need to pull out our Bibles, find a quiet place to read and reflect, and CALM DOWN!!!  We need to call on the authority of Jesus to cast out these demons of fear...to operate in the confidence of His healing power...and to lead by example and “heal” others as we interact with them each day.  This is “Christian Discipleship 101”, people!  Have you read The Book and taken notes from the Teacher?  Isn’t it time you did?

Daily Devotional for April 22, 2014

1 John 4:17
And as we live in God, our love grows more perfect. So we will not be afraid on the day of judgment, but we can face him with confidence because we live like Jesus here in this world.

Scripture taken from the Contemporary English Version © 1991,1992, 1995 by American Bible Society, Used by Permission.

Greg’s niece and her family came for a visit during Easter.  We all got together at Greg’s brother’s for a cookout one night, and as the adults sat around the fire pit and visited, 10-year-old Chase asked me to toss a football with him. Three dachshunds belonging to a couple of family members were in the back yard with us…and they do not like sudden noises or movements.  Chase got a little rambunctious at one point, and I think he squealed.  The dogs came running…barking, growling, and surrounding us.  Without a second thought, Chase screamed, turned his back to me and scooted up as closely against me as he could get…and I wrapped my arms around him tightly until the dogs moved away.

I honestly do not know whether those little dogs would have hurt our nephew…but I would have done all I could to prevent it…and Chase instinctively knew that.  In a moment of great fear, he knew just what to do…and where to turn.

There are many times in our lives when we face something frightening or unsettling.  It may not be as “at-your-heels” as three barking, growling dogs…but we all encounter situations that disturb us or cause us worry and concern.  What do you do when this happens?  Is God so ever-present in your life that you instinctively back up to Him and allow His arms to engulf you?  Do you have a pervading, often inexplicable sense of calm…even in the midst of a situation that would understandably panic most people to their core?

A few months ago, I met with a high school “small group” of senior girls.  I shared with them a couple of times in recent years where I had experienced some gut-wrenching events that I honestly did not think I could bear.  I related to them how I prayed and begged God to somehow prevent these things from unfolding…and how I trusted Him when I could see that they were going to happen anyway.  When the unthinkable happened…God covered me in His peace and steeled me with calm and reserve that I could not comprehend - nor fully explain.  He sheltered me from the worst of the pain and heartache, because He knew I could not handle it on my own.  I backed up against God, and He wrapped me in His arms and held on tightly.

Maybe you have been through a similar situation - or are experiencing one of these even now…
  • You have watched as a loved one suffered and slowly inched out of this life and into the next…and there was nothing you could do to stop it.
  • Someone you loved was suddenly taken from you…leaving you shocked, bewildered, and feeling totally lost.
  • The “rug was pulled out from under you” at work – and you lost your job or your hours were cut.
  • Bills are piling up, and you seem to be on a path to lose your home or your car, despite your best efforts to come up with the payments.
  • You are failing a class or two…and no matter how hard you study, you can’t seem to grasp enough of the information to pass the tests.
  • You are sick, or you have been injured and can no longer participate in a beloved sport…pick up your kids, grandkids or a precious pet…perform routine household chores or even to the things that make your life enjoyable.
  • You have a relationship breakdown…and you feel a disconnect with a partner, spouse, friend, relative, or acquaintance – and a separation or division of some sorts seems imminent.
  • You keep reliving events from your past, and you can’t seem to forgive those who have hurt you – much less trust them again…and you can’t forgive yourself for any of your past lapses and failings.
  • Despite your best efforts to be a “good person”, your life seems to be crumbling on several levels.  You are unsettled, irritable and negative, nervous and uneasy…and there doesn’t seem to be any “light at the end of the tunnel”.
I get it…I’ve been right there with you in many of these situations.  But I as I told the girls in the “small group”, I have learned that God is always, always with me.  If I will stay close to Him and trust Him completely…He will protect me.  My fears will subside, and God’s peace and calm will cover me.  I admit…I have to remind myself of this often - or maybe GOD reminds me!  The fact is…Satan is NOT happy when we rest in the LORD and let Him have our troubles.  HE is the barking dog who nips at our heels and says, “Be afraid…be very afraid!”

So kick the devil to the curb today.  Back up against God and allow Him to hold you close.  Give HIM your worries and fears…and every facet of your life…and see how much better things can go.  I can’t promise that you won’t have any more troubles or fearful experiences.  In fact, I almost guarantee that you will!  But with God to hold you close, you can face them with confidence…assured that He will always protect you.  And on the Day of Judgment, you will recognize His presence and protective hand as He welcomes you forever into His perfect peace.

When the “dogs” of the devil come nipping at your heels…where will you be standing?

1 John 4:1
Dear friends, do not believe everyone who claims to speak by the Spirit. You must test them to see if the spirit they have comes from God. For there are many false prophets in the world.

A few weeks ago, I bought a lace tablecloth at an estate sale.  A friend of mine was managing the sale, and I commented to him that this cloth had a fairly large stain in the middle.  He readily replied, “Fels-Naptha soap.”  He went on to explain how to use this very old brand of laundry soap to remove stains from clothing.  I told him that my “go-to” stain remover was OxiClean®, and he shook his head and said, “No… this is MUCH better.”  So I came home and tried Fels-Naptha… with no success. The stain was still as vivid as ever.  So I will probably wash the piece again with some OxiClean®… or possibly even some bleach.

Now I’m not saying my friend is a “false prophet.”  And maybe this laundry soap does work for him on the stains he has encountered.  But social media is FULL of supposed “magic bullets” for cleaning virtually everything these days.  Many are sharing these “secrets” with others before they have tried them to personally determine how effective they truly are.  And that’s where this scripture passage comes into the picture.

So many of us are taking the word of others over God’s declaration for our lives.  We are listening to people who tell us we don’t need this or that… even well-meaning friends and family members who offer their “take” on what God intends.  For example… many loving, caring Christians emphasize God’s displeasure with sin and the danger of being tossed into the fiery depths of hell exponentially more than they share with others how much God loves us.  I didn’t truly learn about grace, mercy, forgiveness and serving out of a deep desire to show God how much I love Him until I was a grown woman.  Like many, those who shared in my early faith lessons meant well… but they operated from a place of fear more than one of grace.  And I have to tell you, there is very little peace in serving God from this perspective!

I am encouraging you to share with others and learn from them about what God has in store for you.  Hear their thoughts… but test them for yourself.  Spend time in prayer and Bible study… ASK God to clearly define what He is telling you.  When it comes to the authenticity of God’s word and the presence of His Holy Spirit in your own life, don’t take others’ word for it.  Ask questions, make investigations… test the waters a little and see if this is really what God intended for you.  Focus on Jesus and His love and sacrifices for you.  Operate from a deep, abiding desire to love Him back… not out of turmoil and a fear of retribution… and you will have incredible peace.  Know that you know that you KNOW that you are really hearing from God… and enjoy the quiet serenity that comes with living in His wisdom and glory.
