1 Chronicles 29:10-20
Then, in front of everyone, David sang praises to the Lord:

I praise you forever, Lord! You are the God our ancestor Jacob worshiped. Your power is great, and your glory is seen everywhere in heaven and on earth. You are king of the entire world, and you rule with strength and power. You make people rich and powerful and famous. We thank you, our God, and praise you.

But why should we be happy that we have given you these gifts? They belong to you, and we have only given back what is already yours. We are only foreigners living here on earth for a while, just as our ancestors were. And we will soon be gone, like a shadow that suddenly disappears.

Our Lord God, we have brought all these things for building a temple to honor you. They belong to you, and you gave them to us. But we are happy, because everyone has voluntarily given you these things. You know what is in everyone’s heart, and you are pleased when people are honest. Always make us eager to give, and help us be faithful to you, just as our ancestors Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob faithfully worshiped you. And give Solomon the desire to completely obey your laws and teachings, and the desire to build the temple for which I have provided these gifts.

David then said to the people, “Now it’s your turn to praise the Lord, the God your ancestors worshiped!” So everyone praised the Lord, and they bowed down to honor him and David their king.

I’m in all-out decorating mode this week.  The children and I started Sunday afternoon, and I continued yesterday.  All semblance of “fall” has given way to Christmas, and a magical holiday wonderland is emerging.

I admit…I’m a big kid when it comes to Christmas, and I overdo it with the decorations.  But when I see the looks on the children’s faces, every single ornament, snowman and holly sprig is worth it. As they get older, the children are beginning to appreciate the dozens of nativity scenes I display in our piano room…and the different ornaments on the tree that have sentimental significance.  And of course, they love “their” tree, the lights, and the singing reindeer!

It is a LOT of work to put this all out…and then take it all down. And I’ll be honest…there was a huge part of me that wanted to just skip it all this year.  For the last decade or more, my mother did not put up a Christmas tree or decorate much at her house.  She would say…”I’ll just enjoy Debbie’s decorations.” There has been a lump in my throat as I set out some of her treasures that now are part of my collection…and a smile on my face as I remembered how much she enjoyed many of them - like a big golden Santa that was a gift from her friend, Branson entertainer Shoji Tabuchi.

I reminded myself this morning that this effort is a gift.  God gave us Jesus - and a zillion reasons to celebrate. We do all we can to maintain the focus on Jesus during this Christmas season…but even the secular decorations contribute to the overall joy and wonder of the holiday season.  In total, this transformation of our home says, “Something special is happening…we are celebrating the greatest birthday ever.”  We are “making a fuss” to let God know how grateful we are for His best Gift ever…Jesus Christ! And we are saying to others, “We love Jesus enough to celebrate His birth and share this joy and festivity with each of you!”

So I will finish the decorating.  I may not put out EVERYTHING this year (who am I kidding?!)…but I will make our home a “party palace for Jesus!”  I will give this gift to those who visit…and give the glory to God Almighty. I will praise the Lord and bow down to honor Him with every ornament and piece of tinsel. Let the celebration of Jesus’ birth begin! Now it’s your turn!

Luke 2:25-32
That day a man named Simeon, a Jerusalem resident, was in the Temple. He was a good man, very devout, filled with the Holy Spirit and constantly expecting the Messiah to come soon.  For the Holy Spirit had revealed to him that he would not die until he had seen him—God’s anointed King. The Holy Spirit had impelled him to go to the Temple that day; and so, when Mary and Joseph arrived to present the baby Jesus to the Lord in obedience to the law, Simeon was there and took the child in his arms, praising God.

“Lord,” he said, “now I can die content! For I have seen him as you promised me I would. I have seen the Savior you have given to the world. He is the Light that will shine upon the nations, and he will be the glory of your people Israel!”

Here we are…Christmas Day 2014!  For some of you, the tree is already back in the box!  For others, this is a big day of celebration…with holiday activities scheduled for days to come.

Last night, I watched a Christmas Eve candlelight service on TV, and the pastor said that Christmas is a magnifier.  If things are going great in our lives…then “Christmas” is even bigger and better.  If things are not going well, then “Christmas” makes everything seem worse.

My prayer for each of us today is that we could utter the words of Simeon…that we could say, “I have seen Him as God promised.  Jesus is the Light that will shine upon the nations…our glory…our Savior.  He is all that I need!  I am content!”

May Christmas be more than just a day on the calendar – or a season of the year.  May you celebrate more than just the wonderful birth of Jesus on this day.  Truly celebrate HIM…today, tomorrow, and always…and make EVERY day a Merry Christmas Day!

December 14 ~ Isaiah 60:19-22
You won’t need the light
of the sun or the moon.
I, the Lord your God,
will be your eternal light
    and bring you honor.
Your sun will never set
    or your moon go down.
I, the Lord, will be
    your everlasting light,
and your days of sorrow
    will come to an end.
Your people will live right
    and always own the land;
they are the trees I planted
    to bring praise to me.
Even the smallest family
    will be a powerful nation.
I am the Lord,
and when the time comes,
I will quickly do all this.

All around the world, the Christmas season is being heralded in song and light.  No doubt, thousands of churches presented special music this morning in honor of Jesus’ birthday.  I know ours did…from preschool “Little Ringers” who rang bells to accompany “Silent Night” to elementary school children who sang about “David’s Dynasty” to our adult choir who presented their annual Christmas Cantata.  Advent candles were lit, and there was a lighted Chrismon tree in our church’s sanctuary.  Even Burger King was playing Christmas carols to accompany our lunch!

Obviously, there is something special about songs we only sing for one month out of the year.  Lights and decorations that fill our homes, stores, churches and streets for these four weeks or so take on a magical air.  But at the heart of these enhancements, we are celebrating something incredible…the carefully crafted and orchestrated plan of God to bring Jesus to Earth to be our eternal light!

The great thing about Christmas is that anyone can celebrate, because Jesus came to earth for everyone.  Individuals, couples, small families, large families in every nation of the world can all participate.  God sent Jesus to be the Light of the WORLD!  This is reason to sing…to have parties, to light up our homes, and to exchange gifts in symbolic praise for the Ultimate Gift we have been given!

As you go about the coming days of this Christmas Season, consider the real message of lights, decorations and Christmas carols.  Stop to praise God for sending an Everlasting Light to fill our hearts, save us from our sins, and prepare a place for us for all Eternity!  Invite Jesus to dwell in your heart and celebrate His love and care every single day…and let these next eleven days be a giant revelry in His honor!

Daily Devotional for December 13, 2014

Luke 3:1-6
In the fifteenth year of the reign of Emperor Tiberius Caesar, a message came from God to John (the son of Zacharias), as he was living out in the deserts. (Pilate was governor over Judea at that time; Herod, over Galilee; his brother Philip, over Iturea and Trachonitis; Lysanias, over Abilene; and Annas and Caiaphas were high priests.) Then John went from place to place on both sides of the Jordan River, preaching that people should be baptized to show that they had turned to God and away from their sins, in order to be forgiven.

In the words of Isaiah the prophet, John was “a voice shouting from the barren wilderness, ‘Prepare a road for the Lord to travel on! Widen the pathway before him! Level the mountains! Fill up the valleys! Straighten the curves! Smooth out the ruts! And then all mankind shall see the Savior sent from God.’”

A few days ago, I was invited to Timothy’s kindergarten class to sing Christmas carols with the children. Before I went, my mother reminded me to enjoy this activity, because these moments pass all too quickly.  And she is right…we will blink, and the children will be grown!  Too often, we wish away our lives in anticipation of “big events” and fail to recognize the joy and blessings of each and every day.

Most of us are incredibly busy right now as we prepare for Christmas Day.  And in doing so, I am afraid that many of us are missing “Christmas”!  We’re so busy “preparing the road”, “filling up the valleys” and “straightening out the curves” that the true joy of the Christmas season will pass right by us…and we won’t even notice!  We’ll look up and find that it is December 26th…Christmas Day has come and gone…and we pretty much missed it!

It is one thing to miss the real celebration of the entire Christmas season…but it’s quite another to miss Jesus altogether.  And I’m afraid we do this, too.  We are often so focused on the “doing” that we totally miss the real intention of John’s message…and Jesus’ teachings.  We are looking ahead…to the next miracle…to where God is leading us…to what God has planned for us in the future…or even to the joys of heaven and eternity in His presence - and we miss Jesus here…now…today…in this moment.

Prepare the road for Jesus…but don’t miss Him when He walks right up to you!  Don’t look up to realize that Christmas came and went – and you didn’t fully enjoy the season.  More importantly, don’t miss the presence of Jesus in the everyday moments of your life.  Widen the pathway and level the mountains if you must…but stop to look into Christ’s face and acknowledge His love…this Christmas season, and all year long.

December 12 ~ Acts 2:43-47
Everyone around was in awe—all those wonders and signs done through the apostles! And all the believers lived in a wonderful harmony, holding everything in common. They sold whatever they owned and pooled their resources so that each person’s need was met.

They followed a daily discipline of worship in the Temple followed by meals at home, every meal a celebration, exuberant and joyful, as they praised God. People in general liked what they saw. Every day their number grew as God added those who were saved.

When was the last time you heard someone say they were starting a diet…December 1st?  Let’s face it…the Christmas season is a time of feasting.  We trot out our traditional favorites…egg nog, cookies of every kind, spiced tea, and lots and lots of candy – not to mention the party trays of delicious hot hors d’oeuvres and dishes of every description.  Most of us will sit down at some point to a sumptuous dinner…ham, turkey, dressing/stuffing, and all the trimmings.  But WHY do we do this…and should we?

Let’s unpack this just a bit…Christmas is the time of year when we celebrate the birth of Jesus, our King of Kings.  All throughout the Bible, people feasted to celebrate.  And this is the time of year when we gather with family and friends and revel in the festivities of the season.  Hopefully we will share joy and exuberance in the remembrance of Jesus…the celebration of His blessings upon our life over the last 12 months – and the anticipation of His love and grace upon us in the coming year.

So go ahead…share a cookie and some cocoa with a friend…break bread with loved ones, and enjoy the delicious tastes associated with Christmas.  But remember WHO and WHY you are celebrating.  Take time to give glory to God for sending Jesus.  Make a point to say prayers of thanks to Jesus for His incredible, incomparable gift of Salvation.  Revel in His goodness and make the holiday meals an exuberant, joyful celebration of praise to Him!  This is the time to rejoice and make merry…we will all diet in January!

Romans 12:11-13
Don’t burn out; keep yourselves fueled and aflame. Be alert servants of the Master, cheerfully expectant. Don’t quit in hard times; pray all the harder. Help needy Christians; be inventive in hospitality.

Scripture quotations from The Message. © 1993, 1994, 1995, 1996, 2000, 2001, 2002 by Eugene Peterson.  Used by permission of NavPress, Colorado Springs, CO.  All rights reserved.

I’ve been in the kitchen all morning, cooking for our family Christmas celebration this evening.  There will be twelve us around the table, so I have two beef roasts baking in crock pots, a salad chilling in the refrigerator, two pies cooling on the counter… and seasoned green beans (with bacon and a few other family secret ingredients) simmering in my Mam-ma Polly’s cast iron “Dutch oven” atop the stove.  There are other side dishes and several traditions that will be honored with this meal… but the green beans dish is certainly one of them.

When I smelled something unpleasant this morning, I realized that the flame under the Dutch oven had gone out… and propane gas was seeping into the air around the stove.  It was a putrid smell that I quickly dispersed by relighting the flame and turning on an exhaust fan.  Thankfully, I was nearby and discovered this quickly... and I am watching carefully to make sure that I do not turn the dial too low for that burner in the future!

Our hope and faith in God is a lot like the burner on my gas range.  If we are not careful, we can reduce the control button on our faith and focus to a point where the fuel of God’s great love, grace, mercy, forgiveness and blessings just leaks out and is squandered in our lives.  And the results can really stink!  More importantly, if left unchecked, this can create a potentially dangerous situation.  We risk becoming cynical, hopeless, and ineffective as a Christian disciple.

God doesn’t want us to waste one drop of His love and care.  He didn’t send Jesus to earth to live and die for us so that we could fritter away His gifts into thin air.  God’s present of Jesus Christ is far too precious to leave unattended and un-nurtured.  The last thing any of us should ever want is for our Discipleship to smell to the high heavens!

So today, on Jesus’ birthday, let’s redouble our efforts to keep the flame of His love burning in our hearts and minds.  Amidst the food and the festivities, let’s remember how important it is to always be alert servants… cheerfully expectant.  Let’s take time to pray… to help others… and to seek creative ways to be a light for Christ Jesus.  May it always be said of us that we kept the faith…remained hopeful… and that our efforts to serve in Jesus’ name were like a pleasant aroma.  God bless and keep you this day… and always.  And have a very Merry Christmas!

1 Corinthians 15:16-20
So if the dead won’t be raised to life, Christ wasn’t raised to life.  Unless Christ was raised to life, your faith is useless, and you are still living in your sins.  And those people who died after putting their faith in him are completely lost.  If our hope in Christ is good only for this life, we are worse off than anyone else.

But Christ has been raised to life! And he makes us certain that others will also be raised to life.

It seems like every year, the Christmas decorations come out a little earlier.  I think I heard the first Christmas commercial (gee thanks, K-Mart!) somewhere around the end of September.  I am certain that there were Christmas decorations on the shelves alongside the Halloween costumes at Wal-Mart.  And several people I know put up their Christmas tree and decorations a few days ago!  It’s like we don’t believe Christmas will ever come again, so we have to grab all of it we can this year and make it last!  And how many people do you know who will walk around in something of a funk for the first half of January… bemoaning the fact that the holidays are over?

Yes…I decorate for Christmas right after Thanksgiving Day.  Yes…I keep our tree and decorations up through New Year’s!  And I enjoy all of the holiday festivities… baking…gathering gifts and making treats for the little ones…sending Christmas cards…watching holiday specials on television…and inviting people into our home to enjoy a warm fire and some hot tea and a cookie or two!  But I am so looking forward to the Ultimate Christmas… one that lasts all year long…an unending feast that doesn’t pack on an ounce around the hips and music and laughter like we have never heard before.  I’m looking forward to celebrating every day with Jesus and fellow believers…a Christmas Day that never ends!  And I know that it is coming!

For this reason, I can pack away the decorations in January and continue to enjoy my earthly life.  I know that Christmas Day will come again… one way or another.  I honestly do not understand how people function without this hope.  I cannot imagine what it would feel like to believe that this earthly life is all there is… that when you die, you die, and it’s all over.  I refuse to believe that Jesus isn’t waiting for me… that my friends and loved ones who knew Jesus and loved Him on this earth and have “passed over” already are not there waiting, as well.  I will not believe that this is the end… that there isn’t one continual celebration waiting for me “on the other side.”  And I hope you cannot believe this, either!

There is an old hymn that says, “Because He lives, I can face tomorrow.”  It ends with… “life is worth the living, just because He lives.”  Is this true for you?  Do you believe that Jesus lives… that He is waiting for you and will raise you to life in heaven for all eternity?  Are you able to face tomorrow because He lives?  Don’t you want to be?  This is the day to ensure your spot at the Ultimate Christmas celebration.  Now is the time to fall to your knees and say, “Jesus, I know that You rose again. I believe that You are alive and waiting for me… and I want to be with You forever.”  We basically have two options…choose to live in the confidence that Christ rose again and waits for us… or live without any hope at all and be worse off than anyone else.  Will your life be “worth the living” because of the hope and faith that Jesus lives?  Or will you face the emptiness of living with the idea that your “Christmases” - and your life itself - are finite?  The choice is totally yours…what will you decide?

Revelation 21:6-7
Everything is finished! I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end. I will freely give water from the life-giving fountain to everyone who is thirsty. All who win the victory will be given these blessings. I will be their God, and they will be my people.

Scripture taken from the Contemporary English Version © 1991,1992, 1995 by American Bible Society, Used by Permission.

My husband went out to check on a few folks this morning, and he stopped by my niece’s house to leave some things they had forgotten last night at our house. The children were dancing around amidst all of their Christmas gifts and the surprises Santa Claus left for them. Timothy stopped suddenly, commanded everyone’s attention and said, “I need to tell everybody… Grandma and Grandpa are bringing more presents!” My sister says that when they arrived and “more presents” were opened, Timothy was like virtually every other kid in the world on Christmas morning… he announced, “We need more presents!”

In many ways, a lot of us could say that everything is finished this Christmas. But in the most important way of all, this truly is the beginning rather than the end. We do need more - of Jesus - and we can have more of Him each and every day. Jesus truly is the Alpha and the Omega… for each believer, everything begins and ends with Him. But we’re by no means done! For us, every day is Christmas – or should be… a new beginning… another chance to share the Good News of Christ with others and to serve as His hands and feet on this earth.

So celebrate Christmas today. Open gifts, have an extra cookie or piece of pie, enjoy family and friends - and maybe watch a ballgame or two on TV or a holiday movie. But remember that we are not finished! Jesus will return someday. In the meantime, we have work to do. We must keep Him in our hearts every single day and share His message with others. We may not say “Merry Christmas” again for another eleven months or so… but we must share the Christmas spirit all year long.

Jesus is bringing more presents… freedom, victory and blessings for each of us…are you ready to receive them? Is your “Christmas” finished… or has it just begun?

Galatians 2:19-21
What actually took place is this: I tried keeping rules and working my head off to please God, and it didn’t work. So I quit being a “law man” so that I could be God’s man. Christ’s life showed me how, and enabled me to do it. I identified myself completely with him. Indeed, I have been crucified with Christ. My ego is no longer central. It is no longer important that I appear righteous before you or have your good opinion, and I am no longer driven to impress God. Christ lives in me. The life you see me living is not “mine,” but it is lived by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me. I am not going to go back on that.

Is it not clear to you that to go back to that old rule-keeping, peer-pleasing religion would be an abandonment of everything personal and free in my relationship with God? I refuse to do that, to repudiate God’s grace. If a living relationship with God could come by rule-keeping, then Christ died unnecessarily.

Scripture quotations from The Message. © 1993, 1994, 1995, 1996, 2000, 2001, 2002 by Eugene Peterson. Used by permission of NavPress, Colorado Springs, CO. All rights reserved.

It’s Christmas Eve, and like many people, we are scurrying to do last-minute things before the family arrives for dinner and holiday festivities. There was a time, not so many years ago, when I would have thrown myself into a tizzy…cooking, cleaning, decorating and getting everything “just so” for the arrival of my family and friends. I did clean our house and decorate - and there will be a delicious potluck meal… although traditional turkey and ham are not on the menu this year! But my focus has definitely shifted from concentrating on everything being “Christmas-card perfect” to spending time with those who visit and truly enjoying the hours we will share together.

For the first time in at least 15 years, I did not write a “Christmas newsletter” to enclose in holiday cards… and I scaled back my Christmas card list significantly. I still care deeply about every person on the list… but I’m finding other ways throughout the year to let them know this, so I don’t feel that a card during the Christmas season is as necessary as I once did. Instead, I spent the two-plus days it would have taken me to address these cards to play with Timothy and Zola and introduce them to the wonder and excitement of Christmas.

Last Christmas Eve, we got everything ready for a big holiday dinner… decorated the house…filled the stockings… sent the cards and prepared for an evening of fun and festivities. Then my grandmother fell on our driveway as she stepped from the car and suffered a bloody puncture wound and concussion. We ate in shifts… and my grandmother spent two nights in the hospital. She never made it inside our house. That was when the “Christmas rules” totally flew out the door for me.

Sitting in a hospital room late on Christmas Eve, looking at my frail little grandmother with her head wrapped in a turban of gauze, I watched nurses and aides scurry in and out to check on her. They were not home enjoying a family dinner… they were ministering to others in God’s name. The next morning, a very cheerful aide came in to straighten the room. She was bubbling with “Merry Christmas!” greetings. She could have been grumpy and full of complaints about missing Christmas morning with her children and extended family. Instead, she did everything possible to make my grandmother comfortable and to bring her cheer.

THIS is what God asks of us. He wants us to toss the “rules” of the world to the curb and focus on being the hands and feet of Jesus. The true celebration of Christ’s birth is to bring joy, grace, mercy, peace and comfort to others. It won’t matter if there is dust on our furniture or we don’t have turkey and ham this year. What will matter is that we gather and share this holiday… that we revel in the surprise and amazement of the little ones as they open their packages and stare at the lights… that we hug each other and thank God that we are together, with plenty to eat, warm beds in which to sleep, and all of our basic needs more than met.

Each one of us celebrates Christmas for a few of the 365 days in each year. But what we really need to do is to celebrate Christmas every day… to surrender our ego and focus on serving Jesus and sharing His love with others. If we don’t do this, the Apostle Paul is right… Jesus came to earth, suffered, bled and died for nothing. I don’t believe for one minute that this is the case - do you? What will you do to demonstrate this today… and in the year ahead?

I pray that your Christmas Eve is blessed… that you share love, peace and joy with at least one other person. If you are spending the holidays alone, pick up the phone and call someone to say, “I love you.” Attend a worship service and celebrate Christ’s birth with others. Visit a shut-in or someone in the nursing home… or spend some quiet time talking to God and thanking Him for all of His blessings in your life. But let this be the year that you toss “rules” to the curb and really start to live in Christ Jesus. Make this the Christmas that you truly begin to celebrate Him! Merry Christmas Eve!

1 Chronicles 16:8-15
Praise the LORD and pray in his name! Tell everyone what he has done. Sing praises to the LORD! Tell about his miracles. Celebrate and worship his holy name with all your heart. Trust the LORD and his mighty power. Worship him always. Remember his miracles and all his wonders and his fair decisions.

You belong to the family of Israel, his servant; you are his chosen ones, the descendants of Jacob. The LORD is our God, bringing justice everywhere on earth. We must never forget his agreement and his promises, not in thousands of years.

Scripture taken from the Contemporary English Version © 1991,1992, 1995 by American Bible Society, Used by Permission.

It’s finally here… one of the days we wait for all year long - Christmas Eve! No doubt, there will be celebration and worship going on in every corner of the world, as we revel in the birth of our LORD and Savior, Jesus Christ. And surely more than a handful of promises have been made… “I promise to be good so Santa will come”… “I promise to stop over to visit during the holidays”… “I promise I won’t eat or drink too much”… “I promise not to spend more than I can afford”… “I promise to focus more on Jesus this year and less on the commercialism of the holidays.”

Many promises will be made with the best of intentions, but more than a few of these will also be broken. Thankfully, we serve a God who is just and fair and always honors His commitments. The promises He gave us in the prophecy of the Old Testament were fulfilled over 2000 years ago… and still hold up today. Jesus came to earth to live among us as a human being and to show us how to love one another and serve God wholeheartedly. He died on a cross to pay for our sins… and we cling to the promise of spending Eternity in Heaven with Him someday.

In this season of tinsel and garland, twinkling lights and decadent food, gifts and festivities extraordinaire, we must remember WHOSE we are… and WHY we celebrate. This is a great time to reflect on the miracles in our own lives that were performed by the same God who sent His only Son to earth so long ago. Acknowledge how blessed you are and how fair God has been in your life. Recognize that He promises to continue to bless you and work in and through you to accomplish great things in His name. The birth of Jesus Christ was completely wrapped in the promises of God’s hope and glory… and these promises and agreements are as solid today as they ever were.

THIS is the real reason we celebrate. This is the reason we gather and shower each other with love, gifts, food and more. We are saying, “Jesus has come, by the power of God! He has showered us with blessings and miracles… and He will continue to do so. Praise be to God for His great love and kindness.” Never will there be another birthday celebration so grand. We are truly honored to be included in this party. Will your celebration be fit for the King of Kings?

Psalm 147:7-12
Celebrate and sing! Play your harps for the LORD our God. He fills the sky with clouds and sends rain to the earth, so that the hills will be green with grass. He provides food for cattle and for the young ravens, when they cry out.

The LORD doesn't care about the strength of horses or powerful armies. The LORD is pleased only with those who worship him and trust his love. Everyone in Jerusalem, come and praise the LORD your God!

Every one of us most likely knows the words to the Christmas carol, “The Little Drummer Boy.” In one verse, he says, “Baby Jesus…I am a poor boy, too. I have no gifts to bring… to lay before the King.” The only thing the drummer boy can offer is a song on his drum… and that is plenty. My grandmother recently recalled how wonderful it was to receive her Christmas stocking as a child… filled with walnuts, an apple, and an orange. In a family where money was more than a little tight, those were big treats to my grandmother and her siblings... and a tradition she continued into my own childhood. My fondest memories of Christmases past are not of the gifts received as much as the time spent with my family and friends.

In this season of extravagance… of blown paychecks and maxed-out credit cards used to buy gifts we can’t afford, we need to remember what is really important. God doesn’t care what Santa Claus brings you… what kind of car you drive or whether you have the latest smart phone. He is not impressed that you may be able to afford to give your family and friends the “Christmas of their dreams” and spend thousands of dollars on extravagant gifts.

God is more impressed when you spend time with loved ones, make a donation to a charity or someone in need, or visit a shut-in. He is more pleased when you offer to babysit for a stressed out mom, walk the dog of an elderly person when the weather is bad, or spend an hour in prayer for those who are in need of a special touch from Him. God beams with pride when you are patient and courteous to your checker and those in line with you in this busiest of retail seasons… when you knock on a neighbor’s door with a plate of holiday goodies or a beautiful plant - “just because”. In short, God cares more about what you give from the heart than how often you open your wallet. He wants you to share His love with your gifts… not show how much money you can spend. He wants you to impress HIM… and nobody else.

God can afford to give us everything and anything our heart desires. With a simple wiggle of His finger, God could make us billionaires… or bums. The point is… God gives us everything we need – and more – according to His will. We cannot outdo God. And frankly, we cannot impress Him! But we can praise God and shower Him with love and celebration. We can honor Him with everything we say and do… and give Him all the glory for every gift… no matter how large or small it seems.

This Christmas Season, let’s concentrate more on sharing God’s love and less on sharing what we can buy. Let’s be impressed with HIM… and less with ourselves. Let’s celebrate the One who always gives good, perfect gifts… and trust Him to always meet our needs – at Christmas and every day of the year.

Psalm 146:6-10
God made heaven and earth; he created the sea and everything else. God always keeps his word. He gives justice to the poor and food to the hungry. The LORD sets prisoners free and heals blind eyes. He gives a helping hand to everyone who falls.

The LORD loves good people and looks after strangers. He defends the rights of orphans and widows, but destroys the wicked. The LORD God of Zion will rule forever!

Shout praises to the LORD!

Christmas Day was the one time of the year when my mom actually said, “Have a cookie for breakfast!” For most of us, we associate December 25th with something magical – a time to somewhat throw caution to the wind. We eat what we want, skip our workouts and diets, stay in our pajamas all day, get together with people we haven’t seen all year for a great big celebration, and more. Many of us drink too much, party to hearty, and spend far more than we have in the bank! For others, December 25th is a day they would just as soon skip altogether. They are lonely, poor, hungry, sick, grieving and downtrodden. A holiday that is supposed to be all about joy and “making merry and bright” is simply like a knife to the heart.

God understands all of this… and He stands ready to meet you right where you are this holiday season. He always keeps His word…and not just on December 25th. For this, we can shout praises to the Him, no matter where we find ourselves - this Christmas, and every day of the year.

We find it easy to focus on the joy of giving during the Christmas season. We also find it easy to focus on what we lack and feel rather sorry for ourselves. The truth is that we serve an awesome, amazing, powerful and loving God who is always there for us, every minute of every day of the year. And for this, we can continually celebrate and be grateful.

As we approach December 25th, stop and shout praises to the LORD for meeting you right where you are and always having your back. Celebrate all that He has created… and thank Him for showing up in our lives each and every day.

Psalm 145:10-19
Creation and creatures applaud you, God; your holy people bless you. They talk about the glories of your rule, they exclaim over your splendor, letting the world know of your power for good, the lavish splendor of your kingdom.

Your kingdom is a kingdom eternal; you never get voted out of office. God always does what he says, and is gracious in everything he does. God gives a hand to those down on their luck, gives a fresh start to those ready to quit.

All eyes are on you, expectant; you give them their meals on time. Generous to a fault, you lavish your favor on all creatures. Everything God does is right — the trademark on all his works is love.

God's there, listening for all who pray, for all who pray and mean it. He does what's best for those who fear him — hears them call out, and saves them.

The “Sunday paper” was full of circulars and ads for all kinds of “last-minute gift ideas.” Countless online retailers are offering free shipping and promising “You can still have this in time for Christmas!” Everywhere you look, someone is ready to lavish gifts and “stuff” upon us… to “play Santa Claus” and “make our Christmas merry and bright!”

What we really need is the favor of God. He stands ready to lavish His gifts upon us… but we often crave the things of this world instead. As we head into the last week before Christmas Day and rev up our holiday preparations and last-minute shopping, let’s stop to remember why we celebrate Christmas… and WHO is truly responsible. Let’s think a little less about what Santa Claus is bringing us and a lot more about what God does for us each and every day.

Let’s remember that God shows up right on time to meet our every need… to save us when we are down and out… to feed us body and soul… to lavish His goodness, grace, mercy and love on each one of us. How could we not love such an amazing God? How could we not offer Him our very best and put HIM at the top of our list of priorities?

It’s easy to get caught up in the tinsel and sparkle of the commercialism of Christmas… but it’s time we paid more attention to God and the gifts He offers us every day of the year. How will you spend the “home stretch” of this Christmas season?

Psalm 145:1-4
I will praise you, my God and King, and always honor your name. I will praise you each day and always honor your name. You are wonderful, LORD, and you deserve all praise, because you are much greater than anyone can understand. Each generation will announce to the next your wonderful and powerful deeds.

When my little cousins visited last weekend, they told us about the new elf they “adopted” this year and named Bells. Bells is one of Santa’s helpers, and he reports back to the North Pole and lets Santa know if Olivia and Owen are being nice. He’s also mischievous and fun… and if you touch him, he loses his magic! Just ask Owen and Olivia – they can tell you all about their elf, Bells!

Ask virtually any toddler who can say a few words who the man with the red suit and white beard is, and he/she can tell you, “Santa Claus!” Many of these children have never actually seen the man… they don’t have a personal relationship or experience with him… yet they know who he is. Even at two and a half, Owen told his daddy to leave Bells the Elf alone, or “… he’ll lose his magic and Santa won’t come!” And believe me… my little cousins do not want Bells to lose his magic!

I’m afraid far more children know about Santa Claus and the Elf on a Shelf than Jesus. Thankfully, my little cousins are not among them. From an early age they have been introduced to their “Forever Friend” and taught to honor Him. And I have sung “Jesus Loves Me” to Timothy, prayed over him, read books that speak of God and talked to him about Jesus since he was just a few months old. He, Owen, Olivia, and countless other children are already learning about the power and wonder of their Heavenly Father.

As we age, we often start to blur the lines. If we are not careful, the Elf on the Shelf and Santa Claus will have more importance in our lives than Jesus Christ! Especially in this holiday season, many will place more significance on getting the packages purchased, wrapped and under the tree than reflecting on the birth of Jesus and what His coming to earth meant for us. Many will spend more time hurrying to this party and that than stopping to spend a few minutes with someone who can no longer get out and go to parties – or anywhere else, for that matter. Many will celebrate the commercialism of the holiday season and never crack open a Bible or consider the true message, much less take advantage of this opportunity to begin telling a child about Jesus.

There is room for the Elf on a Shelf in the holiday celebrating. But a lot of us have pushed Jesus so far down the shelf that He’s just about to fall off… if He hasn’t already. And little ones who know all about Santa and the magic of Christmas are capable of learning about the real “Magic” of the season. Each of us started somewhere in our journey to get to know Jesus. In this season of wonder and excitement, let’s remember to stop and praise HIS love and power… and thank Him for the wonderful deeds He does for us every day of the year.

Someone took time to share Jesus with you… are you “paying it forward” and sharing Him with others? Isn’t this a great season to begin?
