Romans 13:11-14
But make sure that you don’t get so absorbed and exhausted in taking care of all your day-by-day obligations that you lose track of the time and doze off, oblivious to God. The night is about over, dawn is about to break. Be up and awake to what God is doing! God is putting the finishing touches on the salvation work he began when we first believed. We can’t afford to waste a minute, must not squander these precious daylight hours in frivolity and indulgence, in sleeping around and dissipation, in bickering and grabbing everything in sight. Get out of bed and get dressed! Don’t loiter and linger, waiting until the very last minute. Dress yourselves in Christ, and be up and about!

I still remember the day when I got a phone call from my Mam-ma Polly, and she and her best friend, Ruby, had been involved in a car wreck.  It was probably 4:00 p.m., and I was dressed in some of the worst clothes I own…a ragged t-shirt and some very loose cropped knit pants.  These were my “house cleaning/workout” clothes.  I had on no makeup…I had not fixed my hair.  It was “one of those days” at my house, where I had gotten busy with other things and never bothered to really “dress.” And now, my grandmother was calling me…stranded on the other side of town and in immediate need of rescue.

I did what I had to do…I grabbed my purse, hopped into the car and headed to the scene of the accident.  I’ll shorten the story a bit by saying that Mam-ma refused treatment at the scene from the EMTs and assured everyone she was okay. Then she got in my car and said, “I can’t breathe…my chest is really hurting.”  We ended up in the hospital Emergency Room for several hours, where x-rays were made, tests were run, and the diagnosis was a badly bruised sternum.

People came and went, and I shrunk into the corner, greatly embarrassed by how terrible I must have looked. I’m sure that there were some who thought I must be the real accident victim!  And I should have learned my lesson from this day…but I have to admit that I have not.  I love nothing more than a day where I can spend much of it – if not all – in my pajamas!  It’s not that I am lazy…or that I am totally unproductive these days.  But I have to say, I am more productive on the days that I dress and get up and get going!  Just a few minutes of attention to getting dressed and “presentable” could mean a world of difference in how the entire day progresses.

So what’s the point?  Some of us get so caught up in the particulars of our life that we don’t take even a little bit of time each morning to “dress” with God…to spend a quiet minute or two asking Him to help us with our day.  We don’t “put on the full armor of God,” and we are often caught off guard in some manner later on.  We put on the old rags of “dressing” in things that do not honor God…gossip, dissension, overindulgence, self-serving activities, and sins of all kinds.  Instead of placing our focus on God and ways to serve Him with our whole hearts, we “lie around in our sweats” and leave room for the devil to take control!

So take a few minutes each day to seek God’s help in your preparation.  Whether you are packing lunches and dressing for school or work…or just grabbing a second cup of coffee to sit and read the newspaper in your pjs…ask God to equip you for the day.  Call on Him to meet your needs and those of your circle of friends and loved ones - and ask Him to show you how and where to serve.

Take inventory of the things that fill your life…your priorities, your friends and acquaintances, the activities that occupy your mind and your time.  Where have you failed to get dressed and get going?  Where do you need to make some adjustments?  Time is passing so quickly, and we truly don’t have a minute to waste. Will this be the day that you begin to “get up and get dressed” with God?  Don’t you think it should be?

Revelation 22:5
Never again will night appear, and no one who lives there will ever need a lamp or the sun. The Lord God will be their light, and they will rule forever.  Jesus answered, “God wants you to have faith in the one he sent.”

Scripture taken from the Contemporary English Version © 1991,1992, 1995 by American Bible Society, Used by Permission.

Our little ones have a hard time going to sleep at night when they visit us. They want the light left on – or some form of illumination nearby - and I get that.  When I was a little girl, my siblings and I would go to stay with our paternal grandparents at their farm “in the country.”  Their house sat on a dirt road, surrounded by thick forests…and the darkness at night was beyond what I can describe. There were no street lights. No digital clock on the night stand delivered the time in LED.  There was no blinking smoke alarm in the ceiling - or glow from so much as the power light on a television set!

And the quiet was amazing!  The only noise was the steady tick-tock of my grandparents’ mantel clock as it counted down the minutes and chimed on the hour and half-hour.  So I lay there many nights, trying to “see” in the darkness - and listening to that clock…totally unable to relax and fall asleep!

This might have something to do with why I keep so many lights on in our house today.  We have twinkling lights that are plugged in each morning – lamps on timers that go on and off different hours of the day and night.  And I leave a light on in our bathroom each night, so that we are not stumbling around in the darkness.  I am not afraid of the dark…but I have to say that I prefer the light…and I am more than a little glad to hear that there will be no darkness in heaven!

I am also grateful that Jesus (and His Holy Spirit) illuminates my heart… and for the most part, there is no room for the devil and his darkness.  I marvel sometimes at how sources of light have crept into our contemporary lives…how we are never in a room that some gadget doesn’t have a light source, like the LED display on digital clocks and the alarms in our walls/ceilings.  And we think nothing of it.

By contrast, I’m afraid that many of us have grown complacent and accepting of the intrusions of darkness in our hearts - and the devil’s attempt to pepper the light with areas of sin and iniquity. If we are not careful and diligent, we will allow him to sneak in little areas of darkness that can grow over time – and we’ll never even see it coming.

When I think of Jesus…and Heaven…I think of bright light that never fades.  I picture a light so bright and pure that we shouldn’t be able to even handle it without protective eyewear – and yet we bask in its brilliance with eagerness and boundless joy.  I want all of this Light that I can get – even now!  I have faith that Jesus is ALL that I need…and I trust Him to care for me completely.  So I am doubling down on my efforts to stay close to Him…to listen for His voice and “keep the lights on” as much as possible. What about you?

Luke 22:31-32
“Simon, stay on your toes. Satan has tried his best to separate all of you from me, like chaff from wheat. Simon, I’ve prayed for you in particular that you not give in or give out. When you have come through the time of testing, turn to your companions and give them a fresh start.”

Yesterday, three-year-old Nathan came to me and said, “I’m thirsty.”  “I’ll get you something in a minute,” I told him.  “But I’m THIRSTY!” he wailed.  He gave me his most pitiful pouting lip, big crocodile tears, and the repetitive “fit” of a toddler as he pled his case. Patience is not the strong suit of three-year-olds!  The other day as I told Nathan “no” about something, he muttered, “You don’t like me…you don’t love me anymore.”  Oh, the pity parties children can throw!

My passage from Jesus Calling* this morning was about self-pity.  It said in part, “When you are weary or unwell, this demonic trap is the greatest danger you face.”  WOW!  This echoed in my head as I read the words of Jesus…”Satan has tried his best to separate all of you from me…”  In recent months, I feel like Satan has tried very hard to separate Greg and me from Jesus.  He has pretty well “thrown the book at us” with the sudden deaths of Greg’s brother and my mother…an upper respiratory virus that sapped our health and strength for a few weeks during all of this turmoil…the general stresses and energy drains of the holidays…and more.  It would be so easy to stay in bed, pull the covers over our heads, and let the world pass us by as we feel so very sorry for ourselves and all that has befallen us.  But then the devil would win…and we simply cannot have that!

I was reminded in Jesus Calling that “…the closer you live to Me, the more distance there is between you and the pit.”  In this passage from Luke, we hear Jesus tell Simon that HE has prayed for him.  Can you imagine it…Jesus praying for us?!  That took my breath! With this in mind, how could we possibly cave in and succumb to the devil’s insistence that all is lost?  Do you see how important it is that we turn to Jesus and focus on Him rather than on our situation?  If He is praying for us, how on earth can we possibly continue to wallow in self-pity?

There is an old song called “Pick Yourself Up**” – written by Jerome Kern and Dorothy Fields 1936 for the movie “Swing Time.”  One phrase says:

“Nothing's impossible, I have found
For when my chin is on the ground.
I pick myself up, dust myself off
And start all over again.”

This is exactly what Jesus is commanding us to do.  We are not to give the devil any satisfaction.  We are to recognize that Jesus is fighting for us…petitioning God on our behalf…guiding and caring for us through His Holy Spirit.  We are to pick ourselves up, dust ourselves off, start over…and help others do the same.

We are not self-absorbed three-year-olds…and we should not act like them.  Regardless of how badly we want to stomp our feet, stick out our lower lip and throw a fit…this is not what those who trust in Jesus do when the chips are down! The choice is ours completely…but to choose to spend even a little while in self-pity doesn’t seem like a viable option to me.  What about you?

Luke 4:4-8
But Jesus replied, “It is written in the Scriptures, ‘Other things in life are much more important than bread!’”

Then Satan took him up and revealed to him all the kingdoms of the world in a moment of time; and the devil told him, “I will give you all these splendid kingdoms and their glory—for they are mine to give to anyone I wish—if you will only get down on your knees and worship me.”

Jesus replied, “We must worship God, and him alone. So it is written in the Scriptures.”

“He wore me down!”  If you have not uttered this sentence at some point in your life, you are probably lying!  Whether it was a child who persisted in the “Please, can I have just one piece of candy/toy/whatever” or a friend who said, “C’mon, it won’t hurt to try just one,” to the person who convinced you that “Everyone is doing it…it’s not that bad”…we have all been “worn down” at one point or another.

This is the devil’s specialty – wearing us down.  He has the patience of Job – and the persistence of a five-year-old who really, really wants something!  And the only One who can truly stand up to him is Jesus Christ.  “So you are saying there is no hope for us?” you may ask.  No…I am saying that the only way that we can handle Satan is by calling on the power of Jesus Christ to work and through us.

Too many people think that the devil is just an imaginary “bogey man” that Christians use to manipulate others…that he isn’t real.  And they couldn’t be more wrong.  This evil being had the “chutzpah” to try to tempt Jesus Christ!  So we should be anything but surprised that he would take a stab at us on a daily basis!

What does this mean for you and me?  First, we must not think more highly of ourselves than we ought.  We must remember that we are powerless without God.  Additionally, we must work every single day to stay connected to God…to hear His voice…to feel the presence of the Holy Spirit in our heart and mind, so that we have the strength and confidence to say, “I don’t need this…and I most certainly do not need you, Devil!”

Finally, we must not grow complacent.  This, too, is the devil’s stock in trade.  He needles us and whispers lies in our ears and waits for us to wear down – and to give in to his manipulations.  He plays on our frustrations and the fact that everything doesn’t always go as we hoped…and he says, “I’ll make it ALL better if you will join me.”  We MUST NOT fall for this!

I know this will make me sound wack-a-doodle (and a lot of you already think I am) but I often find myself saying, “Go away, Devil!” I say this several times a day…from the little things like when my serger machine will not re-thread easily to when someone cuts me off in traffic or I am tempted to lose my patience over something.  (I've already had to speak to him this morning!)  You may not believe that "the devil is in the details" of something so insignificant…but I assure you that this is the case! Satan will start with the smallest things and escalate them into big ones, just to get your attention – and your heart.

Recognize that Satan is real…and that he wants you in his camp.  Stay connected to Jesus…listen for His voice and learn from His example.  Remind yourself often that the “Bread of Life” is all you need…and thank God for sending His Son.  Stand tall and strong against the devil, and never let him wear you down.  Only JESUS can “make it all better” and give you the desires of your heart.  Do not be fooled by this imposter.  If you really want Jesus to make a difference in your life, you must surrender completely to His will and trust in His strength and sustenance…on all levels.

Join the “Wack-a-doodle Club” and learn to put the devil in his place.  Call on Jesus to feed you and give you His will power.  Instead of being worn down, wear the full armor of God and stand up…for Jesus – the only One who can really make everything better.
