Romans 13:11-14
But make sure that you don’t get so absorbed and exhausted in taking care of all your day-by-day obligations that you lose track of the time and doze off, oblivious to God. The night is about over, dawn is about to break. Be up and awake to what God is doing! God is putting the finishing touches on the salvation work he began when we first believed. We can’t afford to waste a minute, must not squander these precious daylight hours in frivolity and indulgence, in sleeping around and dissipation, in bickering and grabbing everything in sight. Get out of bed and get dressed! Don’t loiter and linger, waiting until the very last minute. Dress yourselves in Christ, and be up and about!

I still remember the day when I got a phone call from my Mam-ma Polly, and she and her best friend, Ruby, had been involved in a car wreck.  It was probably 4:00 p.m., and I was dressed in some of the worst clothes I own…a ragged t-shirt and some very loose cropped knit pants.  These were my “house cleaning/workout” clothes.  I had on no makeup…I had not fixed my hair.  It was “one of those days” at my house, where I had gotten busy with other things and never bothered to really “dress.” And now, my grandmother was calling me…stranded on the other side of town and in immediate need of rescue.

I did what I had to do…I grabbed my purse, hopped into the car and headed to the scene of the accident.  I’ll shorten the story a bit by saying that Mam-ma refused treatment at the scene from the EMTs and assured everyone she was okay. Then she got in my car and said, “I can’t breathe…my chest is really hurting.”  We ended up in the hospital Emergency Room for several hours, where x-rays were made, tests were run, and the diagnosis was a badly bruised sternum.

People came and went, and I shrunk into the corner, greatly embarrassed by how terrible I must have looked. I’m sure that there were some who thought I must be the real accident victim!  And I should have learned my lesson from this day…but I have to admit that I have not.  I love nothing more than a day where I can spend much of it – if not all – in my pajamas!  It’s not that I am lazy…or that I am totally unproductive these days.  But I have to say, I am more productive on the days that I dress and get up and get going!  Just a few minutes of attention to getting dressed and “presentable” could mean a world of difference in how the entire day progresses.

So what’s the point?  Some of us get so caught up in the particulars of our life that we don’t take even a little bit of time each morning to “dress” with God…to spend a quiet minute or two asking Him to help us with our day.  We don’t “put on the full armor of God,” and we are often caught off guard in some manner later on.  We put on the old rags of “dressing” in things that do not honor God…gossip, dissension, overindulgence, self-serving activities, and sins of all kinds.  Instead of placing our focus on God and ways to serve Him with our whole hearts, we “lie around in our sweats” and leave room for the devil to take control!

So take a few minutes each day to seek God’s help in your preparation.  Whether you are packing lunches and dressing for school or work…or just grabbing a second cup of coffee to sit and read the newspaper in your pjs…ask God to equip you for the day.  Call on Him to meet your needs and those of your circle of friends and loved ones - and ask Him to show you how and where to serve.

Take inventory of the things that fill your life…your priorities, your friends and acquaintances, the activities that occupy your mind and your time.  Where have you failed to get dressed and get going?  Where do you need to make some adjustments?  Time is passing so quickly, and we truly don’t have a minute to waste. Will this be the day that you begin to “get up and get dressed” with God?  Don’t you think it should be?

Luke 22:35-37
Then Jesus asked them, “When I sent you out to preach the Good News and you were without money, duffle bag, or extra clothing, how did you get along?”

“Fine,” they replied.

“But now,” he said, “take a duffle bag if you have one and your money. And if you don’t have a sword, better sell your clothes and buy one! For the time has come for this prophecy about me to come true: ‘He will be condemned as a criminal!’ Yes, everything written about me by the prophets will come true.”

A couple of Sundays ago, my friend Valerie and I taught 2nd-3rd grade Sunday school together.  We both had tan tote bags that looked very similar…and we both remarked that we had each thought the other one’s purse was ours. Valerie showed me how heavy her purse was…and I laughed, because mine was equally heavy.  It seems that we women try to carry the world in our purses…and if there are small children involved, this is absolutely a necessity!

Once in a while, Greg and I will go somewhere that I do not carry a purse.  Sometimes, I will slip a couple of things in the car…and I usually have a pocket for my phone. But in general, the days of “traveling light” pretty well disappeared for me years ago.  Just as surely as I don’t carry my purse, the children or I will need something – tissues or a handkerchief…eyeglass cleaner…cream for some sort of bite, itch or “boo-boo”…hand sanitizer…a pen…my extra set of keys or my wallet…the kids’ sunglasses…and so much more. To go without these things might not amount to a matter of life or death, but I would rather be prepared than caught off guard!

How does this apply to our daily living as a Christian?  Jesus is telling us that we can’t just wander through life and expect God to take care of everything for us.  We can’t let our feet hit the floor in the morning without our “duffel bag” by our side, filled with the word of God (our sword), the presence of the Holy Spirit (our currency), confidence and faith in our mission (extra clothing), and direct communication with our Heavenly Father to assure that we are on the right track!  We have no clue what we will need in any given minute, so we’d better be prepared for anything!

The battle is real. The stakes are high. The days of venturing out into the world with just the clothes on our back are gone. The devil’s enemies are waiting and watching, and they will pick out those who are not prepared and attack them with a vengeance.  Many will never even see the “hit” coming.  Do not be among them!

Your “duffel bag” may seem so heavy and cumbersome at times…and totally unnecessary at others.  But I assure you, it is worth the weight.  There will be days when you want to ask, “Why can’t I just ‘be’ today?”  And the short answer is…”What if Jesus had said this on the cross?” Our “burden” pales in comparison to that of our Jesus.  So pack your duffel bag and prepare for the journey ahead.  There is work to be done - and we don’t have a minute to waste!

1 Peter 3:15
Honor Christ and let him be the Lord of your life.

Always be ready to give an answer when someone asks you about your hope.

Scripture taken from the Contemporary English Version © 1991,1992, 1995 by American Bible Society, Used by Permission.

A friend and I were talking about a situation that is dear to both of us, and she said, “I guess I need to practice my response to people about this, because I don’t have as good of an answer handy as you seem to have.  I need to be able to talk to people about this with more confidence.”  Let’s be honest, if we are speaking to someone about an issue, and we stumble over our words and don’t seem to have a full grasp of things, we probably won’t be very convincing!

This passage reminds us that it’s not enough to “walk the walk, and talk the talk.”  We have to demonstrate our faith by our actions…but we also have to have answers that make sense. Does this mean that all Christians must be Bible scholars and know scriptures by heart that can be recited at a moment’s notice?  Absolutely not!  But you have to be able to tell people WHY you are so sure that God is in control.  We must be ready to explain how God has answered prayers in our own lives.  We need to be confident in our justifications of our hope in Jesus.

There is nothing wrong with suggesting that you look up scripture passages together…or in saying, “I don’t know…but I’ll find out!”  But ask yourself this…wouldn’t you “do your homework” before trying to explain things to someone else...everything from how to prepare a certain recipe to how to repair something to what “home remedies” work best for you?  This is no different.  We Christians are called to “get our ducks in a row” and speak confidently from the heart about our hope and faith in Jesus.  We don’t need to second guess ourselves or fear that we will say the wrong thing – we need to be so “practiced” that we’re sure our words make sense.

The best way to accomplish this is to actually practice…to find opportunities to share with others what Jesus is doing in your life.  If you are not comfortable yet having these conversations with others, write down your thoughts and study them.  Have an idea in your head of what you would say to someone if he/she asked you about your faith.  Know how you would respond when given an opportunity to share what Jesus has done for you.  Then take advantages of chances to share your hope with others.  The more you do this, the easier it will become.

There is nothing wrong with spontaneous, heart-felt witness...and when you ask God to give you the right words, He will surely do so.  But it doesn’t hurt to practice a few responses, so that you feel more confident when you do speak on Jesus’ behalf.  Spend some time in prayerful preparation…and get so comfortable with expressing your hope and faith that it becomes second nature.  You will honor God…and you will represent Him well.  And isn’t that what being a Christian disciple is all about?
