If you have watched television or read a newspaper – or even gone online – in the last few days, you know that “after-Christmas sales” are everywhere. Let’s be honest… the storekeepers would rather sell their wares to us at dirt-cheap prices than keep them around to be inventoried. And… they hope they can at least get a little more money out of them, rather than store them for next year.
More than one person will take some time this week to clean out a closet and/or a few drawers. “Out with the old – in with the new,” we’ll say! As we look toward a new year, many of us will clear out some clutter and make room for the new things we got for Christmas – or purchased afterward.
This is a good time for us to clear out the “Spiritual clutter,” as well. If you are like me, there are a few old thought processes and habits that need to be tossed, making room for a renewed faith and more Godly characteristics. For me, the “clutter” in my life is a penchant for whining and complaining about things I should be handing over to God. I know I cannot fix them… and I know WHO can! So why waste a minute of my time – or the ear of those who have to listen to me – when The One who can truly do something is waiting to hear from me?!
My challenge to each of us this week is to spend a few hours clearing out some clutter – cleaning up our house (literally and spiritually) – and getting things in order. We will function better in a house that is neat and organized… and we owe it to God to create a “Spiritual house” for Him that is clutter-free and full of room for Him to dwell. What kind of “house” have you prepared? Can the Holy Spirit truly rest there? Do what you have to do to get things in order. Tie up the loose ends, clear out the junk, and make room for the new things He has in store for you! Start the New Year with a fresh attitude and clean spaces!

Philippians 4:12-13
I know what it is to be poor or to have plenty, and I have lived under all kinds of conditions. I know what it means to be full or to be hungry, to have too much or too little. Christ gives me the strength to face anything.

No matter what you have experienced, I guarantee you the Apostle Paul endured worse. Yet he boldly acknowledged that Christ gave him strength to face anything. Don’t you believe that God will do the same for you? If you have studied Paul’s life, you know that he was not always so faithful. You know that once, he was an enemy of Jesus… and may have even been present at the crucifixion, known then as Saul.
I know some of you have endured incredible hardships and challenges. I know some of you face tremendous uncertainties, heartaches, and disappointments. But I also know that what God did for Saul/Paul, He will most certainly do for us. And we can all face anything if we put our trust in Jesus Christ.
Regardless of who you are or where you are in life… no matter what you are facing… God’s grace and strength are sufficient for each of us. Step out in faith and ask Him to guide you. Put Christ at the forefront of your thoughts, and focus on Him as you tackle any and all challenges… from the tiniest issue to those that seem insurmountable. See how well He cares for you… how He strengthens you each day. I hope we never have to endure the trials and tribulations that Paul faced. But I know that Christ Jesus will give us the strength to face whatever comes our way. Do you believe this?

May 19 ~ Hebrews 13:6
That should make you feel like saying, "The Lord helps me! Why should I be afraid of what people can do to me?"

One of the hardest lessons for us to learn as Christians is how to lay our burdens at the feet of Jesus – and not pick them up again. We say we trust Him to care for us and meet our needs. We say we believe that He will help us and that all things are possible through Jesus Christ and His strength. Then we wring our hands and wallow in self-pity and doubt… and we worry about everything!
Sometimes I think we enjoy our little pity parties. I knew a woman once who was always complaining about some ailment. If her eyes were open and her lips were moving, she was telling about her latest health problem, doctor visit or medical treatment. Someone once remarked, “That woman delights in poor health.” Another woman I know seems to always have about ten family crises happening at once. One of her relatives is in the hospital, while another just had an accident, while another is struggling in school, and so on… and this woman almost seems to be thriving in the chaos!
To me, the difference in these two women is how they handle their circumstances. The woman who is always ailing seems to delight more in poor health than relying on God to handle her situations. She enjoys talking about her problems and doesn’t seem to ever mention that “God is taking care of me” or “I’ll be alright.” Unlike others who I know are suffering with serious illnesses and never mentioning them, she wants the whole world to know and suffer with her! The woman with the family struggles seems to take them more in stride. She will readily say, “The Lord will take care of it!” If asked, she will share her story, but she also shares her hope and faith that God will help her and recognizes that most of these situations are beyond her control – but well within God’s ability to address them perfectly.
What is your story? Are you known to others as one who delights in problems and self-pity and seems to have little faith? Or are you known as a person who may have BIG mountains to climb, but an even bigger faith that God will lift you up and over them? I hope that I am viewed by others as a woman of faith. I am working hard to lay my worries at Jesus’ feet – and leave them there! What are you doing with your burdens? Who has your back these days?

April 30 ~ Proverbs 30:7-9
There are two things, Lord, I want you to do for me before I die: Make me absolutely honest and don't let me be too poor or too rich. Give me just what I need. If I have too much to eat, I might forget about you; if I don't have enough, I might steal and disgrace your name.

Life is like a carpenter’s level. Some days the bubble is “plumb,” and we are standing upright Other days it veers a little one way or the other. When do you think about God the most? When life is rocking along really well, we tend to get caught up in the moment and forget about Him, don’t we? We seem to operate more in the “Lord, help me!” mode than the “Thank you for my blessings,” moments. On the other hand, when life starts to unravel a bit at the seams, and we decide that God has forgotten about us, we try to handle things on our own – and often end up in a royal mess.
We need to learn to operate in the middle… somewhere between too much and not enough. This passage is not about either having a lot of money and physical wealth or being dirt poor. These verses speak more to our level of contentment – and where God fits into our lives. This is a reminder to avoid distractions – both “good” and “bad” – and stay centered in Christ. Remember to always be grateful and thankful – filled with praise. Remember that we are always in need of God – His wisdom, guidance, love, grace and mercy. Remember that God is always with us – even when the “chips are down.”
Examine your situation today. See where your “level” is “off plumb” and needs an adjustment. Strive to stay centered – both in your daily living AND in your relationship with God. Let this be your prayer – that you would neither be too rich or too poor by His standards – but perfectly centered in Christ Jesus. If you make this your goal, everything else in life will fall into place. Circumstances in your life may occasionally veer “off plumb,” but with God’s help, you will be able to handle them.

March 8 ~ Isaiah 26:4
So always trust the LORD because he is forever our mighty rock.

Think about Sugarloaf Mountain. Picture the strong, sturdy rock formations at the top of that hill and how they have stood for centuries. Consider the strength of those rocks and try to imagine what type of force it would take to destroy them. Hard to even fathom, isn’t it?! The only force I can envision that could destroy Sugarloaf would be GOD Himself! So when we consider God as our “mighty rock” and think of Him in terms of such strength… it makes perfect sense to trust Him, doesn’t it? Think about climbing to the top of Sugarloaf and resting underneath a clear blue sky - feeling the wind blow across your face - and how comforted you are by this sensation… how exhilarated you are to have accomplished reaching the summit. Doesn’t the idea of trusting God to give you these feelings in everyday life make sense?
Don’t you want to trust Someone who will never let you down… Someone who will never let you fall? Don’t you want to trust someone who will always be there, day after month after year? Don’t you want to trust Someone who has the power and strength to, literally, move mountains… yet has the love, grace, mercy and compassion to treat us with the gentleness of an adoring father each and every day? Don’t you want to live in a way that you feel the “wind of God’s love” blow across your face?
We can have all of this, and more… God IS our mighty rock… and He is waiting for us to trust Him. I’m ready – are you?
