Psalm 118:5-6
Pushed to the wall, I called to God;
from the wide open spaces, he answered.
God’s now at my side and I’m not afraid;
who would dare lay a hand on me?

“Pushed to the wall”…I would say
that this is a good description of how my family members and I feel
right now. When one comes to terms with the fact that a loved one has
slipped away – and there is nothing that can be done – it’s a lot like
being “pushed to the wall.” And in that moment, most people do one of
two things…they either cry out to God for help…or they cry to Him in
frustration, anger and bitterness.
I totally get it. I
understand the frustration and fear of being “pushed to the wall”…the
shear panic that sometimes sets in when troubles come. I know that we
all have moments when we want to cry out to God, “How could You allow
this to happen?!” But I also know that to do this flings the doors wide
open for the enemy to enter. If he can get us to doubt God for even a
split second, the devil has the opportunity to wedge his foot in the
door and start to rock it back and forth. He will attempt to steal our
joy and confidence in the LORD if we give him the opportunity.
Don’t
let this happen! Don’t ask God, “Why me?” Ask Him, “What are Your
plans for this situation?” Call on God to clear a path for you to be
able to step away from the wall…to give you breathing room and stand
squarely by your side as a protective shield.
Particularly in
the last 24 hours, I have caught myself wanting to ask God why my
mother’s spirit has not already soared away to Him. Why is she still
here, lying in what can at times be a fitful sleep…while she is, for all
practical purposes, gone from us already? I am “pushed to the wall,”
and I wait for God to come to my side and shield me - and move me away
from this adversity. Very clearly, I have sensed God reminding me that
my surrender to His will and timing over my own is required…that He is
not punishing us in this test of our endurance and patience - He is
strengthening our complete reliance on Him.
Call to God when you
are “pushed to the wall.” Trust His answers and operate in the
confidence that He will protect you from all harm and hardship. Rely
fully on Him and surrender your own will to His. “God’s now at my side
and I’m not afraid; who would dare lay a hand on me?” My prayer is that
this would be your prayer this day – and always.

Psalm 46:10
Our God says, “Calm down,
and learn that I am God!
All nations on earth
will honor me.”
Scripture taken from the Contemporary English Version © 1991,1992, 1995 by American Bible Society, Used by Permission.
“Lord, it’s me again! Do you remember that thing that I’ve been talking about to You? Well, Lord, it’s still not fixed! Lord, what are we going to do about this? I need your help! I can’t do this on my own. But it needs to be fixed. Lord? Lord?? LORD???”
How many times have we all done this? I know I have done it more times than I care to count. There is quite a difference between reminding God about a need or concern…lifting someone to Him in prayer for help, healing or general care… and wearing Him out with persistent pestering! But some of us want to badger God with our constant petitions. And this where we need to insert Psalm 46:10. “Calm down, and learn that I am God!” Know that God will answer when – and how – best suits His plans. It will be perfect! Trust me…I’ve learned this the hard way!
In the King James Version of the Bible, this verse begins, “Be still, and know that I am God…” Engrave this on your heart…write it on the wall or the back of your hand. Hang this verse on your refrigerator or post a note on the bathroom mirror. But do not forget to “be still”…and recognize who God is. Understand the fact that He is present in your life…ready, willing and able to do all things according to His will – perfectly and in the right time.
Aren’t you tired of badgering and nagging? Aren’t you ready to “calm down” and KNOW that God is with you and in complete control. Wouldn’t this be the perfect day to begin? Are you ready to “be still and know”?

Psalm 86:1-7
Bend an ear, God; answer me.
I’m one miserable wretch!
Keep me safe—haven’t I lived a good life?
Help your servant—I’m depending on you!
You’re my God; have mercy on me.
I count on you from morning to night.
Give your servant a happy life;
I put myself in your hands!
You’re well-known as good and forgiving,
bighearted to all who ask for help.
Pay attention, God, to my prayer;
bend down and listen to my cry for help.
Every time I’m in trouble I call on you,
confident that you’ll answer.

Let’s be honest...every single one of us has “blown it” at least once in our lives. We’ve said or done something we should not have said or done. We’ve treated someone unfairly or unkindly. We’ve worn something that looked horrendous! Okay...that last one is probably not in the same league as the others...but you get my point!
The point is, we are human beings...and I’ve got a news flash for you...human beings are NOT perfect! So we mess up, make mistakes, hurt others – and ourselves – and we often look pretty foolish in the process. In short...we are frequently like the psalmist - ”one miserable wretch” in need of a pretty hefty dose of forgiveness, grace and mercy.
Hear the GOOD NEWS...GOD is in the business of doing exactly this! When we humbly submit ourselves to Him...when we accept His gift of salvation through the blood of Jesus Christ and earnestly strive to follow Him, God helps us stay on the right track. He understands that occasionally we may “go off the rails” for a bit – and that’s where His grace and mercy come into play. Our job is to know where to turn for help...to stay in close communication with God so that these “derailments” are kept to a minimum - in terms of both frequency and damage...and to do all we can to humbly seek God’s forgiveness, and to do the necessary work to make amends.
Tall order? You betcha! But operating in the protection of God’s forgiveness, grace and mercy certainly trumps a life of misery and regret in my book any day of the week! Let’s take a good look at our lives today. Let’s see where the wheels seem to be coming off the rails – and make every effort to get back on track. Let’s stop and humbly ask God to forgive us – and to show us how to ask others to forgive us, where necessary. Let’s make a concerted effort to pay better attention...to walk more closely with God and listen for His voice in all things at all times. And let’s be sure to thank Him for taking pity on such “miserable wretches” as the likes of you and me!
“Every time I’m in trouble, I call on YOU, confident that You’ll answer.” This is GOOD NEWS for all of us who serve God with our whole heart! Are you one of them? Don’t you want to be?

Psalm 86:1-7
Bend down and hear my prayer, O Lord, and answer me, for I am deep in trouble.
Protect me from death, for I try to follow all your laws. Save me, for I am serving you and trusting you. Be merciful, O Lord, for I am looking up to you in constant hope. Give me happiness, O Lord, for I worship only you. O Lord, you are so good and kind, so ready to forgive, so full of mercy for all who ask your aid.
Listen closely to my prayer, O God. Hear my urgent cry. I will call to you whenever trouble strikes, and you will help me.

We’re a couple of weeks into the school year...and already, you’re struggling to keep up in a class or two. The doctor just told you that you have a major illness and gave you treatment options to consider. You (or an elderly friend or loved one) are experiencing difficulty in managing your daily living on your own, and it may be time to consider getting some help or moving into a facility where assistance is available. Someone has betrayed you – at school, in the workplace, at church, or even at home – and you don’t quite know what to do with these feelings. Your aging pet is in constant pain or has become quite ill, and you must make a gut-wrenching choice about his/her life. A certain set of circumstances has resulted in your need to make major decisions that could potentially cost you dearly in terms of time, money, relationships, and more.
Every day, many of us face some pretty big challenges. They may not actually be “life or death” situations...but a lot of them will certainly feel like it! We will find ourselves at least whispering under our breath, “I am deep trouble.” We will call on God to help us...to relieve us of these issues and give us hope and happiness. And our merciful God hears our pleas...and He so wants to help.
Here’s the thing...we ask for help, and then we often tie God’s hands. We do this by not completely trusting Him to do what we have asked – and what He has promised. We say, “Lord, help me!” And then we act in a way that says, “I need Your help, but I’m not sure you really can provide it.” We wring our hands and wallow in our fears, disappointments, frustrations, and concerns...and God essentially folds His arms and asks, “Do you really want My help...or not?”
I get it! I do this, too. But I am determined to stop, because I am convinced that I block God’s answers and blessings, to some degree. I believe that there are times when we wonder why God has not given us clear answers or direction...and when you really take a hard look at the situation, you see that YOU were the roadblock. Think of a time when you have asked God to help you with something, and then all you did was “worry the problem to death” with talk and thoughts that clearly indicated that you did not truly trust Him to handle things.
We have to give God room to work. We have to step aside and let Him have control. Imagine that you are in one room, God is in another...and there is a door between you. God hears your pleas for help...but in order for Him to work, you have to step away from the doorway and allow Him to step through. You continue to stand at the door holding onto the handle, crying for help and wondering aloud just how this situation could possibly be resolved...what would be the best option...who you should consult or how you should proceed. All you have to do is step aside and let God come through the door, and He will handle everything – perfectly. But you have to move out of His way first.
Isn’t today the perfect day to step aside and allow God to “come through the door”? Aren’t you ready to experience his mercy, grace and compassion...to truly operate in the hope and happiness of allowing God to offer help and protection? Will you “let go and let God”...and feel the joy and peace that comes from trusting Him completely? Or will you continue to stand on “the other side of the door” and whisper, “Lord, I am in deep trouble.”?

James 1:5
If you want to know what God wants you to do, ask him, and he will gladly tell you, for he is always ready to give a bountiful supply of wisdom to all who ask him; he will not resent it.
The Living Bible copyright © 1971 by Tyndale House Foundation. Used by permission of Tyndale House Publishers Inc., Carol Stream, Illinois 60188. All rights reserved.
I told someone recently...“You are lousy at asking for help!” I said this in the most loving tone possible, but I was deadly serious. I don’t know about you, but it frustrates me to see someone I care about in need of help that I know that I can provide...if only they would ask. I don’t want to intrude or force myself upon the situation...but I would so love to be able to offer assistance, to show the friend or loved one God’s grace and mercy in action. Often, the “assistance” is a small thing on my part that could have a huge impact on someone else...like running errands, providing a meal, or just lending an ear to hear the person “vent” or “talk through” an issue. But all I can do is sit back and watch the person struggle to manage by himself/herself...and wait and hope that my “help” is eventually solicited.
Do you see how we do this to God...all.the.time? For whatever reason, we don’t take a lot of our situations and circumstances to Him in prayer. We muddle along as best we can on our own...and hope for the best. I can just picture God sitting in the heavens, practically growling with frustration...knowing that He can provide instant help, grace, mercy, and peace...but He is too much of a gentleman to intrude or step in where He has not been invited.
We sometimes think that God is too busy...that our issues and petitions are too petty...that we ought to know how to do this for ourselves...that God will be angry, disappointed, ashamed of us, or disgusted...so we dare not mention these things to Him.
Nothing could be further from the truth. God wants to hear from us...about anything and everything. He loves us far too much to be in any way unhappy with us for calling upon Him. And honestly, we all have friends and loved ones who extend God’s grace and mercy toward us...and feel the same way. They are waiting for us to pick up the phone or drop them a text or an e-mail and say, “I’m a little overwhelmed here...I could use your help.”
Will you make a vow today to stop shutting out God...and also others? Will you give Him a chance to handle everything...will you seek His will in even the seemingly small things - and see how beautifully He answers? Will you let others bless you – and receive a blessing in return - as they lift you up with prayers, encouragement, and physical support?
In short, can we all get over ourselves just a little and stop assuming that God and others stand ready to judge us harshly at every turn? Can we quit imagining that our genuine requests for help are an annoyance or irritation? Will we learn to operate in grace and mercy toward others...and to accept the same in our own lives? God is waiting to pour out His wisdom and blessings on each of us...and others want to bless us in His name. Isn’t it time you let them?

Psalm 55:12-14, 16-22
My enemies are not the ones who sneer and make fun. I could put up with that or even hide from them. But it was my closest friend, the one I trusted most. We enjoyed being together, and we went with others to your house, our God.
I ask for your help, Lord God, and you will keep me safe. Morning, noon, and night you hear my concerns and my complaints. I am attacked from all sides, but you will rescue me unharmed by the battle. You have always ruled, and you will hear me. You will defeat my enemies because they won’t turn and worship you.
My friend turned against me and broke his promise. His words were smoother than butter, and softer than olive oil. But hatred filled his heart, and he was ready to attack with a sword.
Our Lord, we belong to you. We tell you what worries us, and you won’t let us fall.
Scripture taken from the Contemporary English Version © 1991,1992, 1995 by American Bible Society, Used by Permission.
I daresay all of us have been betrayed or hurt by a close friend or family member at one time or another…maybe more than once. And for many of us, it’s a game changer. We often become more guarded...less trusting...and sometimes more cynical after such an experience. Someone I considered “like family” once attempted to humiliate me via social media. She didn’t have all of the facts…and the information she had was distorted, at best. Yet she chose to lash out anyway. She didn’t name me specifically, but you didn’t have to be a rocket scientist to figure out to whom she referred in her rant. And her words hurt…deeply…because they not only represented lies and unkindness (if not downright hatred or disdain)…they belied a deeper betrayal and even more lies from the persons who supplied her with the misinformation in the first place.
I don’t dwell on this…and I have been civil to this person since the incident and tried to be kind to her, because I believe that this is what God would have me do. I spent a lot of time talking to God about the hurt and asked Him to help me forgive all parties involved. See, we can’t rest if we have a spirit of unforgiveness – toward anyone, for anything.
As I read this passage, I was immediately transported to the New Testament. These were not just the words of David…they could easily be Jesus’ words about Judas. I know that Jesus loved Judas dearly…and I know that He held no long-term ill will in His heart for the heinous betrayal that Judas committed. But I also know that Jesus was deeply hurt by this…and I am sure He cried out to God for strength, courage, grace and mercy…and a heart of forgiveness toward His precious friend.
So what can we learn from this?
God does not wish that a single one of us suffer – or perish. He stands ready to offer rest in His promises for all who ask for it. Whether you are seeking forgiveness for another…or for yourself…this is the day to spend some time in pursuit of God’s help. What are you waiting for? God is ready to rescue you and give you rest. Are you ready to let Him?

- If you have been betrayed or hurt by a dear friend or loved one, you are not alone. Even Jesus experienced this…and He understands completely how you must feel.
- God stands ready to hear your cries…to share your heartaches, worries and disappointments…and to give you rest from them.
- God will “settle the score”…we need do nothing but give our burdens to Him. We can sit back, rest and relax in His blessings …and He will handle the rest.

Psalm 42:5-8
Why are you down in the dumps, dear soul?
Why are you crying the blues?
Fix my eyes on God—
soon I’ll be praising again.
He puts a smile on my face.
He’s my God.
When my soul is in the dumps, I rehearse
everything I know of you,
From Jordan depths to Hermon heights,
including Mount Mizar.
Chaos calls to chaos,
to the tune of whitewater rapids.
Your breaking surf, your thundering breakers
crash and crush me.
Then God promises to love me all day,
sing songs all through the night!
My life is God’s prayer.

According to a synopsis provided on http://IMDB.com for the 1987 Box Office hit, Moonstruck, “Loretta Castorini (played by Cher), a Brooklyn bookkeeper in her late 30s whose husband died several years earlier in a bus accident, decides it's time to get married again. So she accepts the proposal of a nice, middle-aged fellow named Johnny Cammareri (portrayed by Danny Aiello). Loretta is convinced her first marriage was cursed because she and her husband had gotten married at City Hall; this time, she's determined to do things right, even as she admits to her mother, Rose (Olivia Dukakis), that she's not really in love with Johnny.” Loretta finds herself attracted to Johnny Cammareri’s brother, Ronny (played by Nicholas Cage)."
Ronny Cammareri tells Loretta…”I love you.” Loretta slaps Ronny – twice – and yells, “Snap out of it!” The line has endured for almost 30 years and become a somewhat iconic catch phrase among many! And indeed, as I read this passage from Psalm 42, I couldn’t help but hear “Loretta’s” words…“Snap out of it!”
Do you ever feel blue…even for a few hours – or maybe a day or two? Do you find there are times when your soul is down in the dumps – with or without a good excuse or explanation? Does anyone ever say to you, “Snap out of it!” at such a time?
I have good news for you…regardless of what is happening in your life, God loves you…and He promises to love you all the time! When “chaos calls to chaos” and the “thundering breakers” of the devil’s schemes threaten to crash and crush you, focus on God. Call to Him, just as a drowning person might reach out for a life preserver…because a dramatic rescue is exactly what God offers!
Sometimes all we need is for someone to tell us to “Snap out of it!” But I can tell you from experience that there are times when that tactic does NOT work at all. We often need something deeper, more profound…we need the restful, healing touch of God. And He is always ready, willing, and able to meet us right where we are. God’s deepest desire for us is that we would reach out for Him in all things…in all situations…and in all moods.
Who will help you “Snap out of it!” today? Are you resting in the LORD and trusting Him to save you from the “whitewater rapids” of life? Will you trust His promises to love you all day and sing songs all through the night? Don’t you think you should?

Luke 11:2-4
So he said, “When you pray, say,
Father, Reveal who you are. Set the world right. Keep us alive with three square meals. Keep us forgiven with you and forgiving others. Keep us safe from ourselves and the Devil.”
Scripture quotations from The Message. © 1993, 1994, 1995, 1996, 2000, 2001, 2002 by Eugene Peterson. Used by permission of NavPress, Colorado Springs, CO. All rights reserved.
Yesterday, I purchased some things for my niece and nephews at a Facebook online garage sale. I told the seller I would get them later this week. She responded and asked if she could bring them to me that same day… her bank account balance was under $15, and she needed money for food. Stop and think about it… imagine being down to your last $20 – and hungry. I wonder if this woman prayed yesterday morning for God to keep her family alive with three square meals. Clearly, He did exactly that!
I’ve also been posting an ad on Facebook for my nephew… advertising that he will do odd jobs - like yard work - to support his family. Believe me when I say that we have prayed for God to provide steady work. Literally every time my nephew runs out of work, someone else calls and says, “I need you.” This is clear evidence of God’s love and care.
These are just two ways that God has revealed who He is to me lately. This model prayer that Jesus provided us seems so simple… but it is rich with wisdom and promise for us. God will show us who He is… reveal His power, love, grace, mercy and forgiveness – if only we will ask. He will keep us safe from the devil’s temptations. Notice that it doesn’t say we won’t be tempted… but God will protect us from falling for the devil’s tricks.
If we humbly admit to God when we fall short, He will forgive us. Through His love and mercy – and by the power of His Holy Spirit – we can, in turn, offer forgiveness to others. I don’t mean to belittle God’s incredible love and care, but the old adage that “what goes around, comes around” seems to apply here. When we respectfully bow before God and ask Him to meet our needs, He will do exactly that! And when God blesses and cares for us… and forgives us of our sins and misdeeds… we must do the same for others. I was truly humbled to think that my measly purchase might have been the answer to a mother’s prayer for money to purchase food. I am incredibly blessed and grateful to all who have answered the ad and given my nephew work. God reveals himself to us when we ask… and lately, He has given me abundant evidence of His love and care.
One other thing… the God who blesses and forgives us so mightily deserves our service. He also deserves our praise and honor. When God meets your needs as you have asked, remember to thank Him. Share the GOOD NEWS with others. Tell everyone you can how God has blessed your life… and how He can – and will – bless theirs, as well. When you ask God to show up in your life - and you give Him the glory and credit for doing so – amazing things happen. Are you getting in on all of them? Isn’t it time you did?

Joshua 1:9
I’ve commanded you to be strong and brave. Don’t ever be afraid or discouraged! I am the Lord your God, and I will be there to help you wherever you go.
Scripture taken from the Contemporary English Version © 1991,1992, 1995 by American Bible Society, Used by Permission.
If you ever start to feel discouraged or have a pity party, go to your local hospital and sit in the outpatient waiting area for a while. There you will get a real slice of life… patients waiting for chemo treatments…elderly persons who have a myriad of ailments… loved ones waiting in the surgery area while doctors operate on family members and friends…people who are depending on walkers, canes, wheelchairs, oxygen tanks, and more. Listen to the chatter as these people talk – often candidly – about their treatments, countless visits to doctors and therapists, and the worries and concerns of their day.
Talk about some “Joshua 1:9 ambassadors!” You will hear stories of bravery and strength that will knock your socks off… and probably humble you to your core. I know this is always my reaction. I have waited in this area for doctor visits… and also as an advocate for loved ones. Each time, I come away thinking, “My problems seem so small and insignificant. More importantly, God is handling them for me. I have nothing to fear… no need to be discouraged.”
This very morning, I had allowed some things to pile up on me. I was starting to feel pretty low. Then I opened my outline file of scriptures about frustration and discouragement, and the one I had designated for today was Joshua 1:9. How is that for being brought up short by God?! He very quickly reminded me WHO is in charge here… and it ain’t me!
In this very simple, yet powerful way, God reminded me that I must be strong and brave… never afraid or discouraged. HE is in charge… HE is with me wherever I go… and HE will handle all of my concerns and meet every need. How awesome is that?!
I don’t know what is “on your plate” today. I have no clue what issues trouble or challenge you… what worries and concerns may be weighing you down and bringing you sorrow or alarm. But I do know that this makes the devil very happy to see you so low… and at the same time, it saddens God. He is standing right in front of us saying, “HERE I AM! You have nothing to fear! Pick yourself up and get going. Fill yourself with the comfort and joy of knowing that I have your back… and we’ve.got.this!”
I encourage you to be strong and brave this day… and in the days ahead. Know that God is with you wherever you go… and remember to smile! “This day belongs to the Lord! Let’s celebrate and be glad!” Psalm 128:24

James 4:7-10
So let God work his will in you. Yell a loud no to the Devil and watch him scamper. Say a quiet yes to God and he’ll be there in no time. Quit dabbling in sin. Purify your inner life. Quit playing the field. Hit bottom, and cry your eyes out. The fun and games are over. Get serious, really serious. Get down on your knees before the Master; it’s the only way you’ll get on your feet.
Scripture quotations from The Message. © 1993, 1994, 1995, 1996, 2000, 2001, 2002 by Eugene Peterson. Used by permission of NavPress, Colorado Springs, CO. All rights reserved.
I learned a valuable lesson when Timothy visited us last month. For him, chocolate and sugar are tools of the devil! They turn him into a “spinning top”… a whirling dervish who is cranky, irritable and erratic. The two times he was allowed to have a hefty snack of chocolate milk and chocolate cookies, we all paid the price! Once he “bottomed out” from his chocolate/sugar high, he slept… and slept… and slept for what became an almost three-hour nap!
It didn’t take me long to figure out that I needed to divert Timmy’s attention… to encourage him to put chocolate milk and cookies out of his mind and focus on something else… another food, a toy or game, or some other activity. More than once, there were tears and wails of “But I want chocolate! I need chocolate!” We had to get really serious about our efforts to resist this temptation.
This is an over-simplification of our own inner struggle… or maybe it’s not. So often, the first step in resisting the devil is to divert our focus. Sure, those cookies in the cabinet call our name. Yes, many of us want another cigarette or one more drink. Of course we miss our friends and the old “fun” we used to have. It’s hard to stop peppering our language with four-letter words after years of doing so… especially if “everyone else is doing it.” And the very thing you think will be hardest to hand over to God may be the easiest. The devil is incredibly crafty! It’s the littlest things that will trip you up! After all, one of the most difficult things for me to resist was sweet tea!
We all “play the field” in a variety of ways. God wants us to surrender to Him… to RUN to Him in everything from our diet and health to bad habits, gossip, lying, cheating, and illicit or immoral behaviors… and even the temptation to overindulge in chocolate milk and cookies! It won’t be easy. James tells us to cry our eyes out and be sad… mourn our old ways, if we have to. But in the end, we must give them to God.
As more time elapsed without chocolate, Timmy adjusted and quit asking for the milk and cookies. It helped that I put them away where he couldn’t see them. You may have to do this with your own temptations. Put them out of view… move away from the crowd who entices you to behave in a way that is harmful or sinful…divert your attention and focus on things that are Godly, healthy, and pure. Do what it takes to get serious… really serious! Concentrate on seeking God’s will… and finding it! Allow Him to work in and through you… to change you from the inside out.
I’m not saying that our cravings for the things that are bad for us will ever completely disappear. In fact, I’m pretty sure they won’t, because Satan is never going away. But neither is God… and I know WHO ultimately wins! Are you ready to fall to your knees and hit “rock bottom” so that you can be set upright on your feet? It’s time to get serious… to leave the devil in the dust and whisper God’s name… to call on Him to draw near and work His will. We all must renew our resolve to operate in the serious surety of a life in Christ… instead of the fun and games uncertainty the devil offers. I’m ready to do this. Are you?

James 4:7-10
So let God work his will in you. Yell a loud no to the Devil and watch him scamper. Say a quiet yes to God and he'll be there in no time. Quit dabbling in sin. Purify your inner life. Quit playing the field. Hit bottom, and cry your eyes out. The fun and games are over. Get serious, really serious. Get down on your knees before the Master; it's the only way you'll get on your feet.

I once knew a high school student who was involved in more than a half dozen school activities. He maintained an incredibly hectic schedule of attending this practice or meeting… actual events and competitions. Additionally, he was a member of his church youth choir and participated in other activities with his congregation. I lovingly mentioned to him one day that I was concerned… and feared he was headed for an early burnout. I suggested he pick out one or two activities that he enjoyed the most… maybe ones in which he particularly excelled… and focus on being the best participant possible in those events. He protested… “But I love all of them. How could I ever choose?” He had also been told that getting involved in a lot of different activities would present him as “well-rounded” when he applied for colleges.
It saddens me to say that the pressure to keep up such a lofty schedule caught up with this person, and he ultimately (and reluctantly) did give up a few of the activities. The demands of trying to keep up with so much led to poor choices and even poorer decisions… and he eventually “hit rock bottom,” so to speak. I am happy to say that he did not stay there. In fact, he got serious… really serious, as this scripture says. He coupled wonderful support from family and friends with a renewed dedication to following God’s will. And today, he is thriving.
You and I are really no different from this student. We may not be busy with too many school activities. School may even be a distant memory for some of us. But we all have distractions and temptations… and it’s easy to fall into the trap of “playing the field” and spreading ourselves too thinly. We may try everything from self-help programs to the latest “hot” evangelist and his/her teachings. We may get so caught up in work or a hobby, possessions… or even another person or group of people… and we may let our focus on God take a back seat.
My prayer is that we won’t have to “hit rock bottom” or experience something that “pulls the rug out from under us” before we get serious about our relationship with God and raise it to the very forefront of our daily existence. I love how The Message says that we have to shout at the devil to get him to go away… but all we have to offer God is a gentle whisper, and He shows up immediately. We can rely on the devil to be persistent… but we can rely on God to keep His promises and truly meet our needs.
Aren’t you ready to send the devil and his distractions packing for good? Is today the day you shout and scream and kick him to the curb? God is waiting to set you on your feet… to restore you according to His will for your life. Will this be the day you fall to your knees and whisper His name? Are you ready to get really serious about God?

Romans 7:21-23
It happens so regularly that it's predictable. The moment I decide to do good, sin is there to trip me up. I truly delight in God's commands, but it's pretty obvious that not all of me joins in that delight. Parts of me covertly rebel, and just when I least expect it, they take charge.

You know me and my “reality TV” hobby… I was watching a show called “My 600-lb. Life” on TLC, and this morbidly obese man, Henry, had gastric bypass surgery. Initially weighing in at 715 lbs., Henry ultimately lost 500 pounds over the course of five years. Some of this came in the form of cosmetic surgery to remove excessive skin… but most was a result of eating less and burning body fat. However, this was a very difficult journey for Henry, as it is for so many… in large part because of the temptations that surrounded him.
Henry’s family continued to eat all the wrong things – in excessive quantities – directly in front of him. Once, when he returned home after a month in the hospital for “skin” surgery, his sister said something to the effect of… “We’ve got to stop and get Momma something to eat on the way home. She said she was hungry and not to come home without a sandwich or something.” The next scene was all of Henry’s family, chowing down on burgers, fries and more, while he looked on pitifully. He admitted that sometimes he wanted to throw up his hands and just go back to eating. The man who had overcome so much… lost at least two persons in body weight… acquired an entirely new, much smaller wardrobe – even down to underwear, socks and shoes… and rekindled his relationship with the love of his life… still wanted to eat whatever and whenever he pleased.
Surely this passage has it right… there are times when parts of us covertly rebel and take charge. And like Henry, this is when we have to stand up and leave the room or do whatever it takes to strengthen our resolve to stay on course. This is when we truly have to “speak of things that be not as though they are!” We must use our mouth to call on God to rescue us… and we must do so with confidence that He will do exactly this!
The point is that life is hard… there are always going to be challenges, and Satan is NEVER going away. The minute we think we have it all together is the very moment he will show up full force to try to derail us. We must speak against anything that comes between us and living in God’s will. We must declare that we will not give in – or fold up. We will persevere by the strength of God Almighty, and we will come out on top. You may only have 5 pounds you wish to lose, but temptations still abound. You may have a “habit” you are trying to kick, and temptations keep trying to reel you back in.
You may be working toward a goal, like a college degree, training for a job promotion, or just getting your life on track in general… and roadblocks may keep appearing. Don’t give up! Keep on working toward whatever God is trying to give you. Call on Him to help you – and declare that you know He is going to deliver!
We know that when we get on track, challenges are going to show up almost like clockwork. By God’s grace, we are bigger than those challenges… and we have His full force behind us. Tell whatever part of you that is listening to Satan to get on board or move over, because you are committed to God, and He will not allow you to fail! This is great news! This is worthy of a shout! Praise God… with Him all things are possible… with God, we cannot be defeated!

Romans 10:5-10
Moses wrote that anyone who insists on using the law code to live right before God soon discovers it's not so easy—every detail of life regulated by fine print! But trusting God to shape the right living in us is a different story— no precarious climb up to heaven to recruit the Messiah, no dangerous descent into hell to rescue the Messiah. So what exactly was Moses saying?
The word that saves is right here, as near as the tongue in your mouth, as close as the heart in your chest. It's the word of faith that welcomes God to go to work and set things right for us. This is the core of our preaching. Say the welcoming word to God—"Jesus is my Master"—embracing, body and soul, God's work of doing in us what he did in raising Jesus from the dead.
That's it. You're not "doing" anything; you're simply calling out to God, trusting him to do it for you. That's salvation. With your whole being you embrace God setting things right, and then you say it, right out loud: "God has set everything right between him and me!"

A few years ago, I decided I wanted to read the entire Bible in a year. This was a noble goal… and there are dozens of “study guides” and books that will help a person accomplish this. So far, I’ve tried at least three times… and I once did pretty well until almost the end of May! I may still try this again, but for now, I’m learning that I get bogged down in the process and lose focus on the message! So I am letting God lead my study, as in rediscovering notes I made on sermons, and scripture passages that I jotted down… and He is reminding me of old messages – and new insights.
Having said all of this, I did learn from my attempts to study the entire Bible in one year. The study guide I used suggested reading a passage each day from the Old Testament, the New Testament, and one from Proverbs. And the profound lesson I got from this was how the laws and rituals of the Old Testament were virtually all made new by the coming of Jesus in the New Testament. No longer do we have to make living sacrifices to God for our sins… Jesus was the ultimate Living Sacrifice. We don’t need priests and prophets to intercede with God on our behalf… we can speak to Him directly. We don’t have to follow rituals and rites as laid down in the writings and teachings of the old rulers and leaders… all we have to do is open our mouth and our heart… and let Jesus enter and do His work in and through us.
We are told that the tongue holds the power over life and death… and this is incredibly true when we speak up – and out – for Jesus! His Holy Spirit is as close as a whisper… His presence is as near as calling, “Come, LORD Jesus… forgive me... fill me with your Holy Spirit, and make me whole.”
Whenever we have a problem, we don’t have to consult a book of laws. We don’t need to perform a hand or foot washing, sacrifice a newborn lamb, or hide in a closet for a week of purification. We simply need to open our mouth and ask God to help us. Remember the verse in this passage that says, “The word that saves is right here, as near as the tongue in your mouth, as close as the heart in your chest.” You are never alone… never helpless or hopeless… never forgotten. Your answers are a few well-chosen words away.
Call on God to give you the answers and wisdom you seek today. Ask Jesus to be the LORD of your life and fill you with His Holy Spirit. Carry Him closely in your heart… just a whisper away at all times… and when He answers, thank Him for setting things right.

2 Chronicles 6:28-31
When disasters strike, famine or catastrophe, crop failure or disease, locust or beetle, or when an enemy attacks their defenses—calamity of any sort—any prayer that's prayed from anyone at all among your people Israel, their hearts penetrated by disaster, hands and arms thrown out for help to this Temple, listen from your home in heaven, forgive and reward us: reward each life and circumstance, for you know each life from the inside, (you're the only one with such inside knowledge!), so they'll live before you in lifelong reverence and believing obedience on this land you gave our ancestors.

My maternal grandmother’s uncle, Sam Dial, operated the local livery, where he stabled horses, rented cars and wagons, and served as something of the “cab driver” of the day. When a devastating tornado ravaged our town on Thanksgiving Day 1926, my Uncle Sam and his wife, Lucy, took a truck to the western part of town to collect the dead and dying. In the book Time and the River by Evalena Berry, Aunt Lucy is quoted as saying, “I helped Sam, and we loaded them in those trucks. I carried their feet and he carried their head and we loaded them in there like cord wood. We took them to the Court House and laid them out. When I got home you couldn’t tell what my dress was but mud and blood. That was the ’26 tornado.”
In all, 19 people lost their lives that day. My grandmother was 17 years old when this tornado tore through Heber Springs. She stood on the street and watched her aunt and uncle pass with the truckload of bodies, and she never forgot the gruesome image. This partly explains why we spent much of our childhood hiding in a storm cellar at the first hint of a dark cloud on the horizon. My grandmother was forever changed by this horrific event.
Others have been transformed by involvement with a drunk driver, a catastrophic illness, the loss of a loved one, and more – calamities of any sort. And many have reached out to God with a heart penetrated by disaster. Some are only temporarily transformed, while others are changed for good. But only God can truly know the person’s heart. When we reach out to Him in a genuine spirit of humility and yearning for His help… comfort… rescue… restoration… He answers. God knows when we are sincere in our desire for His help – and for change - and He stands ready to deliver us.
I don’t know your heart. Some people experience disaster and devastation at a young age… some not at all… and some have a lifetime that seems to be filled with such events. Whatever your situation… regardless of your “stage” in life… God stands ready to hear your prayers and meet your needs. If your heart is pure… if you truly desire His answers, He will give them, according to His will for your life.
Psalm 56:8 says “You have kept record of my days of wandering. You have stored my tears in your bottle and counted each of them.”* Give your tears to God today… ask Him to forgive your sins and repair your heart. Humbly and reverently seek Him, and He will reward your life and its circumstances. Give God your devotion and trust, and walk in confidence that He is guiding your steps and rewarding your obedience.

1 Chronicles 17:23-27
LORD God, please do what you promised me and my descendants. Then you will be famous forever, and everyone will say, "The LORD All-Powerful rules Israel and is their God
My kingdom will be strong, because you are my God, and you have promised that my descendants will be kings. That's why I have the courage to pray to you like this, even though I am only your servant.
You are the LORD God, and you have made this good promise to me. Now please bless my descendants forever, and let them always be your chosen kings. You have already blessed my family, and I know you will bless us forever.
Scripture taken from the Contemporary English Version © 1991,1992, 1995 by American Bible Society, Used by Permission.
Four days into this New Year, some of us are filled with high expectations for great accomplishments and abundant blessings. We have set some lofty goals, but we feel confident that we can reach them. Still others have already folded. The first couple of days of an exercise plan were just too hard… we’ve blown our diet… this month’s paycheck is already spent to cover our Christmas debt, and we feel completely defeated.
What makes the difference between confidence and defeat? Often, it boils down to a matter of focus… and where we have placed our trust. Too many of us do not believe that God wants us to live like kings. Mind you, I’m not talking about monetary wealth here… I’m talking about something far more important!
God wants us to give Him our praise and our loyalty… but He also wants us to share our burdens and needs – and to ask Him for help. More than this, God wants us to believe that He will answer and bless us. When we truly start to believe that all things are possible with God, we have the confidence to persevere through hard workouts. We try again another day to stick to a diet and get healthy and fit. We ask God to show us how to set up a budget – and stick to it – and to get out of the financial mess in which we find ourselves.
When we put God first and have the courage to pray to Him with the confidence of a king, He makes big things happen in our lives. If you don’t believe me, just try it. Sit down and have a real, honest conversation with God. Tell Him exactly what you think you need… express your goals and your heart’s desires to Him. Then ask God to help you meet these needs and goals, according to His will. Tell Him that you are placing your trust in Him to make a way where none seems possible… and mean it!
Make this the year that your primary resolution is to draw closer to God and trust Him to handle every single day of your life. Make this the year that you live in abundance and kick a spirit of defeat to the curb. Make this the year when you truly start to live like an heir to the throne of Almighty God… and give Him the glory for honoring His promises – and blessing you and your family. Trust God to make you strong and bless you like a king… and prepare to be amazed when He does exactly this!

Psalm 91:14-16
"If you'll hold on to me for dear life," says GOD, "I'll get you out of any trouble. I'll give you the best of care if you'll only get to know and trust me. Call me and I'll answer, be at your side in bad times; I'll rescue you, then throw you a party. I'll give you a long life, give you a long drink of salvation!"
Scripture quotations from The Message. © 1993, 1994, 1995, 1996, 2000, 2001, 2002 by Eugene Peterson. Used by permission of NavPress, Colorado Springs, CO. All rights reserved.
One of my all-time favorite songs is James Taylor’s “You’ve Got a Friend.” Actually, it was written by another of my all-time favorite musicians, Carole King. In part, the lyrics say, “You just call out my name, and you know wherever I am… I’ll come runnin’ to see you again. Winter, spring, summer or fall… all you have to do is call… and I’ll be there… yes, I will – you’ve got a friend.”
Isn’t that exactly what God is expressing in this Psalm? Isn’t he always just as close as our “call?” Doesn’t He answer in good times and bad… through every season. Isn’t He our truest Friend of all?
If you don’t know this song, Google it and have a listen. You’ll find that the words provide an almost perfect description of our relationship with God… or the relationship we should desire. “You just call out My Name… and you know wherever I am… I’ll come running to see you again.” God is waiting… the party is prepared… is He your closest friend? Have you called on Him lately?

1 Samuel 15:30-31
Saul tried again, "I have sinned. But don't abandon me! Support me with your presence before the leaders and the people. Come alongside me as I go back to worship GOD."
Samuel did. He went back with him. And Saul went to his knees before GOD and worshiped.

Second chances… we all need them from time to time. We make a mistake, and we know we can do better – if only we are given a chance to prove it. We all know of people who are in the media forefront who have really blown it big time… and many are asking for us to “forgive and forget” – to give them another chance to do better. We may also know people in our own community, circle of friends, or even our own family who need a second chance and our support as they make an effort to change.
Think about this… because of the blood of Jesus on the cross, we all have a shot at a second chance. Saul asked Samuel to stick by him and to encourage the entire church and community to support him as he tried to rebuild his relationship with God – and others. We have asked God to stick by us and support us as we commit to living the life of a Christian. And maybe you are asking your friends, family, church family, and community to support you in efforts to turn your own life around and live better. Or maybe someone is asking you to lend your support and encouragement in their own rebuilding effort.
Either way, we cannot refuse. Hopefully fellow believers will come to your rescue and encourage you if/when you need it. And surely you will do the same for others when they approach you. God will not abandon us… He will never turn his back on us when we ask Him to help… to set us on our feet and give us another chance. So how can we do any less for others?
Who do you need to encourage today? Who do you need to ask for support in your own efforts to make changes and/or do better? Do you need to ask God to give you a second chance? Evaluate your situation and see where you need to ask these questions… then get busy finding the road back to God and right living - for yourself and everyone in your path.

Proverbs 20:3
It makes you look good when you avoid a fight -- only fools love to quarrel.
Scripture taken from the Contemporary English Version © 1991,1992, 1995 by American Bible Society, Used by Permission.
Do you know someone who comes in the door trying to pick a fight? It’s really hard to even have a conversation with this person, because he/she takes everything you say the wrong way – or there is potential for this to happen. Those who love to quarrel often have a way of drawing you into their argument before you even realize what is happening.
Pretty soon, you notice that people are avoiding this person altogether, because it’s easier than risking getting into an argument… and the person who loves to argue starts to look rather foolish and sad.
Often we do find ourselves drawn into an argument before we realize what is happening. So the challenge is to stay on guard and to hold our tongue… to think before we speak, and to choose our words carefully. We’ve all heard the recommendation to “count to ten” before we speak in these situations. Just recently I read an article by an expert who suggested we needed to count longer – maybe even to 100! I’m not sure that is necessary, but give yourself a few seconds to collect your thoughts and calm your nerves… and quietly ask God to give you the right things to say and a loving demeanor.
I have not always chosen my words carefully in these situations… and regretfully, I’ve come off looking as foolish as the other guy. I have to tell you, there is a lot of satisfaction in knowing you walked away from a quarrel without losing your cool. In those situations, I am very quick to thank God… because I know I could never do that under my own steam.
I pray that we would all learn to control our emotions… and our words… as we grow in our walk with God. I pray that we would learn to stop more often and count to ten… or twenty or thirty… and give ourselves time to ask God for His strength and wisdom. I pray that we would “take the high road” and walk away with our integrity… claws retracted and reputation intact! I pray that God would work in each of us to develop this ability more thoroughly… and may your arguments and quarrels become less frequent… and far less foolish.

Luke 11:9
So I tell you to ask and you will receive, search and you will find, knock and the door will be opened for you. Everyone who asks will receive, everyone who searches will find, and the door will be opened for everyone who knocks. Which one of you fathers would give your hungry child a snake if the child asked for a fish? Which one of you would give your child a scorpion if the child asked for an egg? As bad as you are, you still know how to give good gifts to your children. But your heavenly Father is even more ready to give the Holy Spirit to anyone who asks.
Scripture taken from the Contemporary English Version © 1991,1992, 1995 by American Bible Society, Used by Permission.
Timothy was staying with us recently, and my mother came over to visit. She brought a blue plastic Easter basket, filled with:
• blue Easter grass
• two different packages/flavors of “Peeps”
• a chocolate bunny
• a Curious George DVD
• a bottle of all-in-one shampoo
• a bunny car filled with Easter candy
• a wand of bubbles, and
• a baby doll that laughs when you squeeze it.
I groaned when I saw all the sticky candy, and she laughed and said, “It’s okay… I’m the great-grandmother!” This is one great-grandmother who knows how to give “good gifts!” And of course, three Peeps later, Timmy was a happy, sticky mess out on our driveway blowing bubbles! He’s not old enough to actually ask for gifts yet, but when he is, I’m sure we will gladly - and readily – oblige… and our door is always open to any and all of our nieces and nephews and young friends.
Truly the basket of goodies was filled with things that, while not necessarily healthy for Timothy, were just what a kid needs on Easter week. Many needs this kid didn’t even know he had were met… and then some!
The GOOD NEWS for each of us this Easter weekend – and always – is that God’s door is always open. He may not give us Peeps and chocolate bunnies, but whatever we ask Him will be given to us, according to His will – and with our best interest at the forefront. So if you ask God for a new Mustang, and you really need transportation to get back and forth to school or work, He may give you a used Ford Focus! If you ask God to help you put food on the table, He may see that you have just enough to eat each day rather than showering you with a pantry filled with groceries. But the point is, God will answer… He will meet your needs. His door is always open!
Because of the blood of Jesus… because of the incredible sacrifice of a totally innocent man Who was willing to take our sins and die for them, we can freely ask for anything. Because this man was Jesus Christ in human form, who could not be contained in an earthly grave, the door to our Father’s house is always open. Because of the incredible love of our LORD and Savior, the Holy Spirit is available to each of us…ready to fill our hearts and be our constant companion!
This is the “Good Gift” of Easter. This is the Good Gift we can enjoy all year long… every year… again and again! Ask God for anything, and trust Him to know just how to answer… and to give you “good and perfect gifts” upon request.

Psalm 71:17-18
You got me when I was an unformed youth, God, and taught me everything I know. Now I'm telling the world your wonders; I'll keep at it until I'm old and gray. God, don't walk off and leave me until I get out the news of your strong right arm to this world, news of your power to the world yet to come, Your famous and righteous ways, O God.
Scripture quotations from The Message. © 1993, 1994, 1995, 1996, 2000, 2001, 2002 by Eugene Peterson. Used by permission of NavPress, Colorado Springs, CO. All rights reserved.
I have laughingly remarked more than once that I know a few older folks who run circles around me on a daily basis. They have more zip than the Energizer Bunny, and by the time I get up, many of them have accomplished a day’s worth of work! But I also hear older people say, “You’re still young… I just can’t do what I used to any more.” And I get that. When I taught kindergarten in my 20s, I could get up and down out of the floor all day long without a second thought. Now, every time I get in the floor with Timothy, the ache in my knees when I stand reminds me that I’m no longer 20-something.
But this doesn’t mean that I can’t do things with my little nephew… or that older Christians cannot continue to serve. It just means that there truly is a “time for every season,” as we read in Ecclesiastes… and we may have to shift our attitude and our focus to fit each stage of life. The question is… are we meeting the challenge and doing all we are capable of doing in each “season”?
See, when we are young and able-bodied, God may be calling us to work with children, do physical labor like yard work for the elderly or simple carpentry and repairs. He may be asking us to drive a route for Meals on Wheels or deliver older adults to medical and shopping appointments and more. As we age, God may shift us to more of a stationary role… prayer warrior, someone who makes phone calls to check on others or sends cards of encouragement and concern. He may want you to use your workplace or your position in the community to share His message with others… and when you are older – possibly retired – He may use you in new and different ways. My 98-year-old grandmother lives in an apartment at an assisted living facility… and she walks across the street to visit nursing home residents.
The bottom line is this… we are never too young or too old to serve God. He will never “shove us on a shelf” and declare us of no use. OUR job is to figure out how and where He wants us to serve… then get busy doing just that! Do you know what He’s calling you to do in this season of your life? Are you getting out the news as He wishes?
