Psalm 138
Thank you! Everything in me says “Thank you!”
    Angels listen as I sing my thanks.
I kneel in worship facing your holy temple
    and say it again: “Thank you!”
Thank you for your love,
    thank you for your faithfulness;
Most holy is your name,
    most holy is your Word.
The moment I called out, you stepped in;
    you made my life large with strength.
When they hear what you have to say, God,
    all earth’s kings will say “Thank you.”
They’ll sing of what you’ve done:
    “How great the glory of God!”
And here’s why: God, high above, sees far below;
    no matter the distance, he knows everything about us.
When I walk into the thick of trouble,
    keep me alive in the angry turmoil.
With one hand
    strike my foes,
With your other hand
    save me.
Finish what you started in me, God.
    Your love is eternal—don’t quit on me now.

“Life is short…and sugar is cheap!” – Jay Grelen, former “Sweet Tea” columnist for the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette

I think of this phrase on holidays like Thanksgiving and Christmas… when we have a family dinner, and I make big pitchers of sweet tea. There is so much wisdom in this phrase.  Life IS short…as many of us know all too well. We don’t stop to take stock of the blessings we have in our lives…or to truly appreciate the presence of those around us.  We look up, and half the people in the room have their noses buried in a smart phone…or they are glued to a television. Or perhaps we don’t even bother to get together at all.

I shared a poignant video* on Facebook last week of an elderly man who was sitting at a holiday table, dining alone.  His children all made excuses for why they couldn’t come for a Christmas visit this year…how maybe next time, they would make it.  Then the video cuts to a scene of the children receiving devastating news. By their reactions, you conclude that the “poppa” has died. The children are shown arriving outside this man’s home. They are distraught…it seems their beloved father/grandfather has died.  But when they enter the home, a holiday meal is on the table. Candles are lit, and everything is perfect…and the father/grandpa emerges from the kitchen, and asks, “How else could I have brought you all together?”

I don’t know your situation and circumstances today. My own family has spent holidays together – and apart - for various reasons.  We’ve postponed holiday get-togethers because someone was ill or hospitalized…and we’ve buried loved ones on Christmas Eve.  And yes, we’ve made our share of excuses why we couldn’t make it to one or more events when there was nothing catastrophic to prevent such a gathering. Sometimes, this couldn’t be helped…but other times, we just didn’t try hard enough.

The point is that we do this with God, too.  We often make excuses or postpone our time with Him.  At best, we give God limited attention and a lot of “lip service.”  Sometimes, He has to shake up our world just to bring us together with Him for some intimate time!  We forget that life is short…and sugar is cheap. It doesn’t cost us anything to spend time with God…and yet, that time is some of the most precious we will ever have.

So this Thanksgiving, thank God with everything in you. Set aside everything and spend quality time with God and let Him know just how grateful you are that He makes your life large with strength…that no matter the distance, He knows everything about you - and keeps you alive in the thick of turmoil and trouble.  Thank God that His love is eternal and everlasting.

While you’re at it…thank God for the people that He has placed in your life.  Reach out to some of them and spend some quality time in conversation, if not personal contact.  Soak in the moments spent together, and relish in them.  Life is short, and sugar is cheap…so maybe drink a glass of sweet tea while you’re at it!  Remember how blessed you are to be loved by such a great and mighty God…and make the most of each blessing that He has given you – this week, and always.

Hebrews 12:28-29
Do you see what we’ve got? An unshakable kingdom! And do you see how thankful we must be? Not only thankful, but brimming with worship, deeply reverent before God. For God is not an indifferent bystander. He’s actively cleaning house, torching all that needs to burn, and he won’t quit until it’s all cleansed. God himself is Fire!

Yesterday, I made a trek to our family cemetery to set out flowers on the graves of several loved ones.  I do this two or three times a year…filling the little pipes that are driven into the ground at each marker with a few silk flowers.  This time it was white poinsettias for the winter season. I also clean up stray flowers that have blown around and pull any weeds that have crept up around the headstones.  In addition to paying respect and remembering our loved ones, this is an opportunity to check up on the overall condition of the cemetery and make sure that everything is in order.

But yesterday, everything was in tip-top shape.  Not only had the grounds been mowed, but someone had actually run a weedeater around each grave and whacked away any stray grass and weeds.  The day was sunny, crisp and clear.  The sky was a bright blue, and wispy white clouds were being quickly blown along by a strong wind.  I stayed longer than usual, talking to God and thinking about each person whose life was represented there.

It’s okay…I know I’m weird…but I have always loved visiting cemeteries.  I am at peace there. I do not find them morbid, sad or frightening.  As I walked among the family graves yesterday and set out the flowers, I thought of each person buried beneath the soil…and I thanked God for them. I laughed as I thought of how my brother totally disliked artificial flowers and would not have been a fan of the ones I placed on his grave.  I thought of how artfully my Mam-ma Polly arranged flowers, and I could almost hear her clucking her tongue at my dismal efforts as I stuck several stems into the pipe at her headstone.

I stuck a few extra stems in the ground at the graves of my great-aunts, Fay and Lugilla…and I thought of these sweet women and how hard their lives were.  I set out flowers for my dad and my Pap-pa Truman, knowing neither one of them would have cared less if their graves were decorated or not.  And I thanked God for these people and what they meant to me…how they served Him and represented Jesus on this earth.  I sat and looked around this pastoral cemetery, flanked by a meandering manmade lake, with Sugar Loaf Mountain in the distance as a backdrop…and I felt God’s peace AND His power.

God worked in the lives of every one of these people…each in a totally different way.  But in the end, He cleansed them and made them into new creatures – both on this earth, and again as they entered the gates of Heaven.  And He will do this for each of us, if we will let Him.

Someday, I will join my loved ones at this family plot…and that is not a scary thought for me.  I know that I won’t really be there - that only what’s left of my earthly body will be physically present.  I will have been cleansed once again by God’s fire and given a new body in heaven.  I have an idea how I would like for it to look…but I know whatever God chooses for me will be even more perfect!

My prayer for you today is that you are not afraid of God’s cleansing fire…that you embrace His efforts to whack away the weeds and stray grasses and create something pure and lovely.  I pray that you know the peace of a future secured for you in Heaven someday, complete with a perfect, beautiful body and more love and abundance than you can ever imagine.  And I pray that you are serving God with a grateful heart…thankful for His cleansing fire and amazing love. We’ve been given an unshakable Kingdom…do you see it?!

1 John 4:4, 7-8
Dear young friends, you belong to God and have already won your fight with those who are against Christ because there is someone in your hearts who is stronger than any evil teacher in this wicked world.

Dear friends, let us practice loving each other, for love comes from God and those who are loving and kind show that they are the children of God, and that they are getting to know him better. But if a person isn’t loving and kind, it shows that he doesn’t know God—for God is love.

Happy Thanksgiving!  This truly is a day to share God’s love with one another.  More importantly, this is the perfect day to thank GOD for all that He has given us.

  • God meets our every need.
  • God gives us hope and courage.
  • God calms our fears.
  • God heals us.
  • God gives us peace
  • God answers our prayers.
  • God plans for our future.
  • God keeps His promises.
  • God showers us with amazing and abundant love.
  • God prepares us for Eternity in His presence.
Our complete well-being – mental, physical and spiritual – is God’s number one objective.  No one will ever love us like God does…and because of this, “no weapon formed against us can prosper” (Isaiah 54:17 paraphrased).  This is the perfect day to not only give thanks to God, but to share His love with others…to be loving and kind - and to demonstrate that we are getting to know Him better every single day.

Let’s make this the day that we truly show our gratitude to God - and to each other - for love, care, friendship, and abundance.  Make a commitment to get to know God better and grow daily in knowledge and appreciation of His love and care.  There is no better day to “Give Thanks” than this one…ready…set…GO!

1 Chronicles 16:30-33
God is serious business, take him seriously;
    he’s put the earth in place and it’s not moving.
So let Heaven rejoice, let Earth be jubilant,
    and pass the word among the nations, “God reigns!”
Let Ocean, all teeming with life, bellow,
    let Field and all its creatures shake the rafters;
Then the trees in the forest will add their applause
    to all who are pleased and present before God
    —he’s on his way to set things right!

It’s going to be a very busy week for many of us.  There are pies to bake, dishes to prep, turkeys to roast – and so much more.  Some of us have last-minute projects to complete and classes to attend. Others are scrambling to get on a plane or pack a vehicle and head across the countryside to Grandma’s for the holidays.  There is so much happening that many of us will forget WHY we are even celebrating.

We often get so caught up in the stress and “busyness” of our lives that we fail to remember Who put the earth in place!  As we hurry through this week and try to juggle all of the balls in the air, let’s stop to give thanks to God, Who makes all things possible.

Let’s be thankful for all that God has given us and show Him the respect and honor that He deserves.  Let’s remind ourselves that indeed, God reigns – today, tomorrow, and forever! Without Him, there would be no Thanksgiving…no hope or healing…no salvation or promise of Eternal life!  Stop and take a breath this week…give thanks to God for all He does for us…and all that He will do in the days to come.

And at the end of the week, when everything got done, the meal was delicious, and we all had a great time together, thank God for orchestrating that, as well!  Let Heaven rejoice, let Earth be jubilant…and pass the word…”God reigns!”  All thanks be to Him forever and ever!

Amos 3:1-2
Listen to this, Israel. God is calling you to account—and I mean all of you, everyone connected with the family that he delivered out of Egypt. Listen!

“Out of all the families on earth, I picked you.
Therefore, because of your special calling,
I’m holding you responsible for all your sins.”

Scripture quotations from The Message. © 1993, 1994, 1995, 1996, 2000, 2001, 2002 by Eugene Peterson.  Used by permission of NavPress, Colorado Springs, CO.  All rights reserved.

“Great gifts mean great responsibilities…” (Luke 12:48)

Probably all of us got at least ONE gift for Christmas.  And I would venture to say that the person who gave us that gift put some time and effort into selecting something that was just right for us.  This person most likely anticipated that we would take care of said gift…that we would treat it with respect and care.  The same can be said for God and His precious reward of salvation through the blood of Jesus Christ.

God gave us His most thoughtful, most loving, most carefully planned gift.  He chose us to be His children…His beloved…His redeemed.  Like all presents, nothing is required in return once the offering is accepted.  However, the “giver” does anticipate that we will honor and respect the bequest.

How do we do this with God’s gift of Jesus?  We strive to honor and emulate Him in everything we say and do.  We stay away from gossip, intolerance, discrimination and disagreement.  We distance ourselves from dishonesty and deceit.  We strive to love others as He loves us…and we pay attention to the needs of those around us – and do our best to meet them in His name. Does this sound like a lot in return for one gift?  You bet it is!  But consider the GIFT!

Hear God’s words again…”I picked YOU!”  Such an amazing endowment deserves our utmost care and respect…and God will hold you responsible for how you treat Him and His endowment.  So…how well are you doing these days?
